This behavior seems to me to be a perfectly natural reaction to obscure,
arcane, irrational, and confiscatory tax policies based on a belief that some
substantial portion of a corporation’s or individual’s earnings or wealth
belongs to the government. I blame no one but the elected fools (or any other
fools) who establish tax laws without considering the downstream effects of
their brilliance.

Re: [MBZ] OT - paypal escrow?

2017-11-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Here’s what I do to prevent that from happening:

I have a separate checking account I use for nothing but online purchases.
It’s linked to my PP account and funded by me electronically when I buy
something through a transfer from another account at my credit union. If I
receive payment via PayPal, I immediately transfer the money out of the account.

No CCs linked to the account, either.

So in a situation like yours, PP can come back all they want, but the well is
dry. I actually had this happen on an eBay sale a few years back, I don’t
recall the exact details, but it was after they changed their policies to
become buyer centric. I think it was a for a part off my W140 S500 coupe. The
buyer screwed up and realized he bought the wrong part - it was a window
regulator for a W140 coupe, which are stupid expensive. Mine was for the
passenger door, and they needed a driver’s door regulator.

It was probably a couple of months after the auction when it came up, and I was
caught totally off guard by it. I had disclaimered the crap out of the
auction, so it was tough beans for the buyer. They cried big tears to both
PayPal and eBay, saying the auction description was incorrect (it wasn’t.) I
pulled a copy of the auction, a screen shot of the EPC with the correct part
number and description, presented it for the dispute on file and told both
parties to piss off.

Two days later I get an email from eBay saying they’re suspending my accounts,
as they tried to ding my PP account for the return and it came up dry. I told
them that was fine with me, as I wasn’t returning the money.

Never heard a word after that. About a month later my accounts were
mysteriously reactivated.

Just for grins I asked my credit union about this kind of stuff. They just
said that if there’s no money in the account and it’s not linked to other
accounts for overdraft protection if someone presents a transaction for payment
they just deny it. No harm no foul for the account holder.

I had PP delay payment. I don't remember the details, but I was
miffed. I also sold a very expensive burner safety control for cheap
and the sandrat (in the US) buyer tried on fleabay to claim it was no

what they were doing. Fleabay denied the claim. a couple months
later, Paypal stole my money and gave it back to the prick. He stole

same thing I told fleabay and that fleaby had already denied the claim.
Screw the seller.

Dan Penoff via Mercedes

Not true.

Payment is rendered instantly.

In a nutshell, there are two ways to pay someone using PP:

1.) “Regular” PayPal which is used for goods and services and charges
the seller a fee based on the total dollar amount of the transaction; or,

2.) PayPal “gift” where money can be transferred to an individual
purportedly as a “gift”. Under the terms of PP gift there are no fees.

Both of these scenarios assume that the seller or person sending the
funds has a bank account in good standing linked to the PayPal
account. That’s because PayPal used ACH transactions to draw the money
from your account. You can fund a PP purchase or gift with a credit
card, but you’ll pay merchant fees if you do so.

PayPal also offers buyer protections in regular transactions where
fees are paid (goods and services, not gift) in that they can help you
get your money back in the event of an issue with the goods. services
or seller. These protections favor the buyer, and as a result of this
a lot of sellers have abandoned venues like eBay that use PP. Things
like allowing a buyer to come back to you as much as six months after
a transaction and demand a refund.

PayPal has no feedback function/capabilities. Only the selling venues
such as eBay have feedback, and they determine the terms as to how
that feedback is used. I am not aware of eBay inserting itself into a
transaction as a proxy or escrow agent.

There are third party escrow services out there that will hold your
funds until you confirm receipt of the item. These are often used for
high dollar purchases, such as cars.

Not true.

Payment is rendered instantly.

In a nutshell, there are two ways to pay someone using PP:

1.) “Regular” PayPal which is used for goods and services and charges the
seller a fee based on the total dollar amount of the transaction; or,

2.) PayPal “gift” where money can be transferred to an individual purportedly
as a “gift”. Under the terms of PP gift there are no fees.

Both of these scenarios assume that the seller or person sending the funds has
a bank account in good standing linked to the PayPal account. That’s because
PayPal used ACH transactions to draw the money from your account. You can fund
a PP purchase or gift with a credit card, but you’ll pay merchant fees if you
do so.

PayPal also offers buyer protections in regular transactions where fees are
paid (goods and services, not gift) in that they can help you get your money
back in the event of an issue with the goods. services or seller. These
protections favor the buyer, and as a result of this a lot of sellers have
abandoned venues like eBay that use PP. Things like allowing a buyer to come
back to you as much as six months after a transaction and demand a refund.

PayPal has no feedback function/capabilities. Only the selling venues such as
eBay have feedback, and they determine the terms as to how that feedback is
used. I am not aware of eBay inserting itself into a transaction as a proxy or
escrow agent.

There are third party escrow services out there that will hold your funds until
you confirm receipt of the item. These are often used for high dollar
purchases, such as cars.

[MBZ] Tip of the Icebergs

2017-11-05 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes

Paradise Papers leak reveals secrets of the world elite's hidden wealth

Files from offshore law firm show financial dealings of the Queen, big
multinationals and members of Donald Trump’s cabinet

What are the Paradise Papers? – video

The world’s biggest businesses, heads of state and global figures in politics,
entertainment and sport who have sheltered their wealth in secretive tax havens
are being revealed this week in a major new investigation into Britain’s
offshore empires.

The details come from a leak of 13.4m files that expose the global environments
in which tax abuses can thrive – and the complex and seemingly artificial ways
the wealthiest corporations can legally protect their wealth.

The material, which has come from two offshore service providers and the
company registries of 19 tax havens, was obtained by the German newspaper
Süddeutsche Zeitung and shared by the International Consortium of Investigative
Journalists with partners including the Guardian, the BBC and the New York
Times.

The project has been called the Paradise Papers. It reveals:

Millions of pounds from the Queen’s private estate has been invested in a
Cayman Islands fund – and some of her money went to a retailer accused of
exploiting poor families and vulnerable people.

EXTENSIVE OFFSHORE DEALINGS BY DONALD TRUMP'S CABINET MEMBERS, ADVISERS AND

DONORS, INCLUDING SUBSTANTIAL PAYMENTS FROM A FIRM CO-OWNED BY VLADIMIR PUTIN'S

SON-IN-LAW TO THE SHIPPING GROUP OF THE US COMMERCE SECRETARY,WILBUR ROSS.

A previously unknown $450m offshore trust that has sheltered the wealth of
Lord Ashcroft.
Aggressive tax avoidance by multinational corporations, including Nike and
Apple.
How some of the biggest names in the film and TV industries protect their
wealth with an array of offshore schemes.
The billions in tax refunds by the Isle of Man and Malta to the owners of
private jets and luxury yachts.
The secret loan and alliance used by the London-listed multinational
Glencore in its efforts to secure lucrative mining rights in the Democratic
Republic of the Congo.
The complex offshore webs used by two Russian billionaires to buy stakes in
Arsenal and Everton football clubs.

The disclosures will put pressure on world leaders, including Trump and the
British prime minister, Theresa May, who have both pledged to curb aggressive
tax avoidance schemes.

The publication of this investigation, for which more than 380 journalists have
spent a year combing through data that stretches back 70 years, comes at a time
of growing global income inequality.

Meanwhile, multinational companies are shifting a growing share of profits
offshore – €600bn in the last year alone – the leading economist Gabriel Zucman
will reveal in a study to be published later this week.

“Tax havens are one of the key engines of the rise in global inequality,” he
said. “As inequality rises, offshore tax evasion is becoming an elite sport.”

At the centre of the leak is Appleby, a law firm with outposts in Bermuda, the
Cayman Islands, the British Virgin Islands, the Isle of Man, Jersey and
Guernsey. In contrast to Mossack Fonseca, the discredited firm at the centre of
last year’s Panama Papers investigation, Appleby prides itself on being a
leading member of the “magic circle” of top-ranking offshore service providers.

It acted for the establishment offshore, providing the structures that helped
to legally reduce their tax bills.

Appleby says it has investigated all the allegations, and found “there is no
evidence of any wrongdoing, either on the part of ourselves or our clients”,
adding: “We are a law firm which advises clients on legitimate and lawful ways
to conduct their business. We do not tolerate illegal behaviour.”

Re: [MBZ] Windshield Polishing Results

2017-11-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I went ahead and did my whole windshield.

As the sun is now out of my line of sight I can’t compare it in bright
sunlight, but in the morning it should still be dark enough when I go out to
see it against oncoming headlights and streetlights, which is almost better
than the sun when it comes to showing defects.

I will say it was amazingly clean when I washed the car afterwards! My RainX
went on like buttah.

The videos I watched for taking out deep scratches used this abrasive and a
felt wheel, like a grinding wheel. They wailed on the scratch with the thing
for a while, but it definitely took out the scratch.

take a stepwise approach with several grits to remove enough glass to get

I also tried it on the headlights, but mine are so badly pitted it was

2nd one was just plain old aggravated assault with a deadly, but he knew nobody

[MBZ] Windshield Polishing Results

2017-11-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Someone (Max?) here was wondering if the polishing compound I got a few weeks
ago to take the scratches out of my back window on the wagon would work to take
some of the “sandblasting” out of a windshield.

I’ve been wondering the same, so this morning I used the polish on a corner of
my windshield.

I just moved the car out into the sunlight, and looking through it from the
interior of the car so I can move back and forth between polished and
unpolished areas, I would say it removed about 75% of the speckling or
sandblasting. There is still some speckling present, but it appears to have
removed a fair amount of it.

I will be interested to see how it looks in the dark, too, so I’ll report back
tomorrow after my morning commute if it’s dark enough then.

Re: [MBZ] Former W126/350SDL

2017-11-05 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Organic apple cider vinegar alone is hard to take. Many can't tolerate the
taste.
Try this:
One half teaspoon of baking soda in a glass.
add
One shot glass of vinegar.. shake the bottle first to get the "mother"
mixed since it settles to bottom and is an important element of why OACV
has benefit.
As soon as it fizzes from the acid base mix of the OACV / baking soda mix-
add
8 Oz of chilled water and stir well...

I prefer adding ice cubes and sipping... your choice on that what you
will have is a nicely carbonated drink with a slight "lemon aid" taste that
is rather pleasant.

You will get the full benefit of the OACV and the baking soda buffers the
unpleasant taste component. Reports are, the baking soda helps the body
process the OACV for even better effect at absorption of the beneficial
elements.

Possibly. Typically it’s the encoder that’s bad. I’ve had some luck with

So when you turn the knob in the newer radios and the volume
bounces up and down with each click or even when you turn the

it also be just the little switch that sends the pulses?

So I guess you’ll need to tear a later model Becker apart to get a part number.

pay $3.50/day in round trip tolls alone.  I’m getting about 23 mpg out of the

They have wifi on the busses, too.  I like the idea of someone else driving.

OK, but the point still stands.  I've had keys that only work in one of their

Re: [MBZ] Former W126/350SDL

2017-11-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The problems I used to have with this express line were twofold:

1.) Too many stops. The run used to have about five stops. As a result of
this, it took forever for it to get from Point A to Point B. That and the
route they used was convoluted. That meant it took a good 90 minutes for the
bus to make it from the start of the route (near my house) to downtown.

2.) Due to #1 and my being at the end of the route, this meant I was first one
on in the morning, and last one off in the afternoon. This made me subject to
riding the whole route, i.e., the full 90 minutes each way.

Right now when driving I leave my house at or around 6:00 am to arrive at my
office by 6:30 am. I leave at 3:30 pm and get home around 4:00 pm, give or
take a few minutes depending on traffic. With the new bus route, the bus
departs a Park & Ride that’s about a five minute drive from my house about 5:50
am or if I go to another stop a similar distance around 6:00 am. I get
downtown by 6:40 am. The return leaves around 3:45 pm and puts me at the first
stop around 4:30 pm.

The whole thing adds maybe a half hour to my commute time, but it’s cheaper and
I don’t have to drive.
