Where to send it depends on where you are, and your preferences. Palo
Alto Speedometer has been an MBCA advertiser for over 40 years.
Probably not the cheapest. MacDan likes performa, as they are in his
neck of the woods. There are other companies who advertise in the Star
too. I can look them up if you want or I think you can get advertiser
info from the MBCA.org website.

Or there is Car-part.com for a used one to use; or to use while yours is
repaired; or to send in and get it reset to match the mileage on the one
going bad, then install.

I do not like Performa. The only time I’ve used them is to sell them
cores. They’re turnaround is not great and neither are their prices. I
use BBA Reman for my stuff when possible. They were the only place
that could fix/rebuild my R129 top controller - everyone else,
including Performa, wanted to “look” at it and charge me a bench fee
for the privilege.

BBA Reman did my 2002 W210 instrument cluster that was suffering from
the bad pixel issue in under a week. I think it was $110 plus $30
shipping to cover both directions (they pay both ways.)

[MBZ] Freezer not freezing

2017-11-26 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
My 22 cubic foot chest freezer stopped freezing yesterday. Luckily I went out
to replenish my supply of frozen blueberries and noticed it was not keeping
things as frozen as usual. I have about 1/2 of 1/2 a cow left from a purchase
this spring.
The freezer is about 30 years old so I guess it had a good life.
Does anyone have any thoughts or recommendations on a replacement? I’ll
probably get something a little smaller this time as there is only the wife and
I at home now. I like the coffin style as it is almost impossible to leave it
open. I had a bad experience with an upright when the door was left open and we
were gone for about two weeks. We came home to a very nasty rotten meat mess
that was really awful. I imagine it was pretty close to the smell of a rotting
corpse.
Thanks in advance,
Mike

The C130 is a real horse.

Emergency takeoff procedure is to hold the nose down and keep it on the
runway until V2 (flight speed) is reached, then pull back and climb at 45
degrees. I don't know of any other aircraft you can do that with,
everything else would be out of runway long before it got to V2.

The amusing thing about them is that they were intended as a stop-gap item
"until the jets were ready". I believe they entered service in 1954, but I
could be wrong

For some strange reason they are still in service -- a friend of mine's
daughter was flying them for the Alaska National Guard before she graduated
to jets.

I completely agree that it is a great airplane, that was not my point.

I also need to correct myself, I was mis-remembering this article:

http://www.military.com/daily-news/2013/10/07/new-air-force-planes-go-directly-to-boneyard.html

Which mentions the pork-barrel that I was referring to as the C-27 vice the
C-130. The C-130 is mentioned as fully adequate and cheaper over the long
term.

The C130 is a real horse.

Emergency takeoff procedure is to hold the nose down and keep it on the runway
until V2 (flight speed) is reached, then pull back and climb at 45 degrees.  I
don't know of any other aircraft you can do that with, everything else would be
out of runway long before it got to V2.

The amusing thing about them is that they were intended as a stop-gap item "until
the jets were ready".  I believe they entered service in 1954, but I could be wrong

For some strange reason they are still in service -- a friend of mine's
daughter was flying them for the Alaska National Guard before she graduated to
jets.

Exactly my experience, the one time I did it. Pulling a bad heater is MUCH
easier than pulling the freeze plug. But, the most likely problem is a bad
cord. It's an easy test, using an ohmmeter.

The C-130 is a fine example of your federal government (the best that money can
buy) buying too much of what your military doesn't need because some congress

If the cord is good and the element is bad and you do not want to do the in
block replacement ( or want to put it off for the winter) there are aftermarket
options. Clamp on heaters, magnetic heaters, inline coolant heaters, battery
blankets etc.

The OEM block heater on my 1983 300TD no longer works.  Is it worth
diagnosing/repairing?  Or simpler to just replace it?  Are they a Mercedes
part?  Anyone BTDT?

That engine is a real big pain to work on, or so I hear. I had a buddy who had
one who had to do some sort of job on it a couple of times that is very common
and a real big hassle but I can’t remember what it was. He said he would never
have another one.

Has anybody ever broken a block trying to remove the plug, or does it
just feel like you're going to rip a hole in the side of the block
before the plug unscrews?
