On one of my reflow attempts I did manage to create a bridge somewhere that
would blow the fuse as soon as I turned on the car. I found the bridge and
fixed it and it went back to accelerating but not holding. Perhaps when that
happened it fried it.

I don't see any problems in those pictures. It looks like a car in

I am certainly not afraid to drive it or buy it.

What the others said.
The control arms attach to the subframe, right?
And the subframe attaches to the body?

If the subframe to body mount is rusted away, she's dead.
If the body is rusted where the top of the shock attaches, that's
repairable but indicative of the car's impending demise.
If the subframe is rusted where the control arm attaches, it's an
expensive fix to replace the subframe.

Otherwise, all I see is a very new shock, and surface rust on the
spring seat.
I'm not sure what's up with that oval hole in the picture, it looks
too precisely shaped to be a rust through, is it a dirty but
intentional factory hole?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Jim drives in a mostly rural location, where
the majority of his roads are not lit at night. Dan drives mostly
suburban, with well lit roadways. Two totally different environs.

I drive in mostly suburban settings now, and see nearly every driver
looking at their smartphone while driving, and I think the lighting arms
race is necessary in suburban settings filled with distracted drivers.

5-year-old Texas church shooting victim wishes for Christmas cards

One of the youngest survivors of last month’s Sutherland Springs church
shooting is requesting holiday cards be sent to him this Christmas as he
continues to recover from the deadliest mass shooting in Texas history.

Ryland Ward, 5, does not yet know that his stepmother and two sisters were
among the 26 killed in the Nov. 5 massacre at First Baptist Church, The
Star-Telegram reported.

The boy was shot five times in the elbow, stomach and leg, and is having issues
with his kidney and a shattered femur. Doctors are hopeful that he can head
home in six to eight weeks, which means he’ll spend the holidays in the
hospital. To help lift his spirits, he’s requested holiday cards be sent to him
with photos of pets or a $1 inside.

I can't remember if it was two balls and double powder or one ball and double

Re: [MBZ] Scraping...

2017-12-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Reading through some of the builds online people have been shooting them. One
guy in England had his gun proofed at the royal proof house. They tested it way
over normal shooting load.I intend to load way under the normal 120gr load,
more like 70gr. I'm interested in seeing if I could get the barrel proofed
anyhow...
I passed on a $700 Pedersoli repo in October, been kicking myself ever since.

Please remember, that these very old guns are intended for display purposes.
IMA does not recommend restoration of these antique firearms into "shooters"
and any attempt to do so should be inspected by a licensed gunsmith before
firing.

You have to remove the conformal coating before doing any solder repairs...

And no, I've never done it, but a few fellows here have.

[MBZ] Cruise control

2017-12-18 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I have still not been able to get this cruise amp working in the sdl. When I
first pulled it I replaced the caps. It worked for a few days the was
intermittent. I then pulled it a couple more times and reflowed all the
connections. Same thing it worked but then got intermittent to where it would
accelerate but would not hold. I have now pulled it again and removed the
solder for every connection and added new. It now does not work at all. Won’t
accelerate or anything. I guess this is a failed attempt. I may have fried it
as this was the first one I have worked on. I guess I will round up another one
and try it again, or break down and order a rebuilt one.

Indeed it would, and it would be even more fun to fly! A neighbor is
selling his current plane so he can build one of those.

This will be my next build after the Tailwind is flying:

I'll incorporate a few changes - 125HP and slatted wings per the Wittman

I find two of them ample.  (The second one is there for redundancy.)  They
are _highly_ visible already.  So, 2x is not blinding?  How about 4x?  10x?
100x?  More lumens equals more visibility, right?  Technically true,
but... what are you _not_ seeing because you can no longer see/notice
anything but that one car in front of you?  Deer?  Road hazards?
Pedestrians?  Children and/or pets?

I have been behind a number of higher-end newer cars recently that seem to
have gone overboard.  Especially the ones that really like high-flux
point-source LED emitters instead of a more diffuse, larger emitter of
similar lumens.  (Like a lensed 1157, for example.)  Once you're above the
threshold of noticing the light, more is NOT better.  Point sources are NOT
better.

It's a real pet peeve of mine, the lighting arms race.  It began with the
HID headlights.

What the others said.
The control arms attach to the subframe, right?
And the subframe attaches to the body?

If the subframe to body mount is rusted away, she's dead.
If the body is rusted where the top of the shock attaches, that's repairable
but indicative of the car's impending demise.
If the subframe is rusted where the control arm attaches, it's an expensive fix
to replace the subframe.

Otherwise, all I see is a very new shock, and surface rust on the spring seat.
I'm not sure what's up with that oval hole in the picture, it looks too
precisely shaped to be a rust through, is it a dirty but intentional factory
hole?

I don't think four brake lights are more blinding than two.
But I agree with you that high efficiency bulbs encourage excess brightness,
especially for those buying aftermarket 'upgrades'. It's the unfocused LED
headlight bulbs that get my goat, followed closely by the fog lights that get
turned on the week they acquire the car and never turned off.
