Kaleb if you want to bid on it I have a spot I can store it for you
until you can pick it up.

If it's drive able and they will let you have somebody else pick it up.

Re: [MBZ] Catastrophic Failure

2018-01-17 Thread clay monroe via Mercedes
Sorry for the loss. I was just contemplating how BMW cars have retained their
unique presences. A benz has no distinctiveness.

By all means part out the car for those items you know will be expensive to
procure for another ride. A spare part is always welcome, and if you plan
repairs or upgrades, you can do it to the spare and then swap it in. Make sure
you have space to store it and strip it.

The return on time invested to scour the carcass for items of value on the open
market is minimal at best. You will need a bunch of free time that would be
better spent billing time. Marketing the items involves truck loads of time
and effort, months at times and then needing to make sure it stays sold.

So in this particular case do you think it would be best to bid on it
and see what happens, make a lower offer, buy it now? Unless somebody
was close that could get the car for me and park it at their place I
don't see how I could get down there until next Month.

How does all that work?

Click the 'register' button at the upper right.
Once you're registered, you can see the fees and 'upgrades and deposits' in the
'my account' pulldown. They've got a fee for everything. Final value fee and
gate fee are unavoidable, and internet bid fee is unavoidable if you aren't at
the yard. Then there's the $50 fee to process the title for a non-dealer, and
sales tax. In Michigan, they pay the $15 state title fee, so the processing fee
is really only $35.

You're allowed to bid up to $1000 on up to one car at a time without a deposit.
Payment has to be made by credit card online (there's a fee for that), by cash
(they only accept up to $400 cash, and only at the location where the car is)
or money order (at the same yard as the car).
If you want to be able to bid more than $100, you can make a deposit with
credit card for no fee.
I'm not sure what would happen if you made a $1000 deposit by credit card, then
bought a car for $900-1000 with tax. It's possible you could use that as a back
door to paying by credit card without getting hit with a credit card fee, if
they're just taking the money for the car out of funds you have on deposit.

Pickup within one week of purchase, I think it's sooner if you use buy it now,
$20 per day for late pickup. The yards near me are open 8am-5pm, five days a
week. The tow companies that they deal with have the key code for the front
gate, so they can move the car out to the front parking lot during business
hours and the transporter can pick up at night. I don't think they'd give you
the gate code, but maybe they would. You could just pay the $700 or whatever
they want for delivery, but that would nearly double the price of the car.

My ML came from state farm insurance but the carfax was clean when I bought it.
Now it says 'salvage auction' on carfax.

show it registered in a fema flood area from 2005 but does not say it

So you're within 5 miles of that CoPart yard?
The rodbender has a clean title and you can buy it without a business license.
Buyer's fees for Buy-It-Now are $294, plus $39 if you bid on the internet, the
$39 fee doesn't apply if you bid from the kiosk at the yard.
It looks like a decent $900 car to me, if it's not burning oil yet.

Agree with Dan. I'd say grab the starter, alternator, battery (assuming
they fit the 1999 model) and anything else that commonly fails like
relays,

or really expensive things like the engine computer. If the headlights,
tail lights, and signal lights are compatible, those are easy to take off
and store. Radio? Speakers? Rear view mirror(s)? Window regulators and
motors? Antenna? Dash instrument cluster? Get a plastic storage bin,
fill it up and write the inventory on the top lid and store that away.
I'll bet that you may only need one or two of the items, but I could be
wrong.

If you want to sell the parts, find an online forum and advertise the
entire car for parts, local pick up only. If you have a place away from
your house to store it, advertise on your local Craigs list.

With your love of trying all sorts of different cars, I would consider
whether or not you will want to keep the '99 running for the long term or
not. If not, don't bother stocking up on spare parts that you will only
have to get rid of later. If so, grab everything you can.
Have you moved, or are you still commuting from Wichita?

Re: [MBZ] OT cyber warfare and self-driving cars

2018-01-17 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
Way back in the NT4 days, I wrote in a Microsoft customer survey (I had 300
servers and 10,000 PCs running their software) that the hacking of our
boxes was akin to driving your car down the freeway at 70 and having a
hacker take remote control of your car, turn the wheel hard left and floor
the gas. I got all kinds of excuses, etc., and a call from Redmond execs
apologizing and promising to do better. We all know how that turned out.

Sorry to hear of your bad luck.

My immediate thought is: How many miles on the 1999 and has it had the
guides replaced? If not, you have another ticking time bomb and not much
point in saving parts if the 2nd car is going to end up like the 1st.

Re: [MBZ] Catastrophic Failure

2018-01-17 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Things that are somewhat consumable like AC compressor, alternator, PS
pump, injection stuff, transmission, computers, brake booster, wiper
motor and bits, etc. and whatever else might be easy (I guess tranny
isn't so easy, but a high $$ item) like the radio, headlights,
taillights, grill, etc.

I took the 420SEL apart, other than the engine/tranny for which you need
a hoist, the rest is pretty easy and even the engine wasn't that hard.
You wouldn't want the engine itself but you could pick all the other
bits off it.  You'd need some place to put whatever you get off, but
aside from the tranny the rest of it would fit in a couple bins or
crates.  If you had more room get the doors and seats and maybe trunk
lid and hood.  Even fenders if they are removable.

Then call someone to haul off the carcass, you might or might not get a
few $$ from them for it as scrap values are pretty low right now.

Considering your current situation, I don’t see how you could possibly benefit

Re: [MBZ] Catastrophic Failure

2018-01-17 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Agree with Dan. I'd say grab the starter, alternator, battery (assuming
they fit the 1999 model) and anything else that commonly fails like relays,
or really expensive things like the engine computer. If the headlights,
tail lights, and signal lights are compatible, those are easy to take off
and store. Radio? Speakers? Rear view mirror(s)? Window regulators and
motors? Antenna? Dash instrument cluster? Get a plastic storage bin,
fill it up and write the inventory on the top lid and store that away.
I'll bet that you may only need one or two of the items, but I could be
wrong.

If you want to sell the parts, find an online forum and advertise the
entire car for parts, local pick up only. If you have a place away from
your house to store it, advertise on your local Craigs list.

[MBZ] Catastrophic Failure

2018-01-17 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
Its been a while since I emailed. I am still receiving digest, but with my new
job I haven't had much time to respond to any. I think many of you know I
have two BMW 7 series. One is a 2000 740IL and the other is a 1999 740IL.
The 2000 has almost 240,000 miles. Last week the poor car experienced a
catastrophic failure. These engines have plastic timing chain guides and they
typical fail between 150,000 and 200,000 miles. Sometimes they fail sooner.
Well, mine lasted almost 240,000 miles. They apparently let go and there is
almost no time to stop the damage from occurring. So, my 2000 7 series is
done. It is going to BMW heaven. My question is for you all with experience
parting out cars. I needed the radiator for the other car and have already
removed it. I know this is a Mercedes list, but I'm wondering if it is worth
the trouble to start scavenging parts off the car to use for mine AND also to
sell for $. I have never tried to do this.

I hope everyone is doing well and staying warm in this nasty weather.

Re: [MBZ] OT cyber warfare and self-driving cars

2018-01-17 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
There was a video a coupla years ago of some guys who hacked into the
control system of a Jeep (I think) through some sort of on-board wi-fi
thing it had as a "feature," and were able to override the driver
application of brakes and other controls.  It was pretty scary.

If these things get connected among themselves to enable "road trains"
with acceleration, steering, and braking, then it would be very simple
to control them from afar to do all kinds of mayhem. Welcome Skynet!

Re: [MBZ] unburned diesel vapor

2018-01-17 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
if raw fuel is smoking, it is almost always time to change the return
lines. it is possible for the injector holder to leak, if the seal was
reused or not properly torqued. Both will result in fuel surrounding
the injector holder, getting hot and smoking off.

Meade Dillon via Mercedes
January 17, 2018 at 1:56 PM
My first thought is that the return lines from the injectors are failing.
Given Randy's caution re: high pressure leak, shut off engine and feel the
return lines with naked fingers, smell them afterwards if you can't
feel or

see fuel on them. Check the cigar hose and other rubber hoses as well.

Get a black light and inspect for leaks tonight in a dark area, engine
running. Diesel fuel has some additive that fluoresces under ultraviolet
light.

If you think it could be a high pressure line leak, then be very careful
looking for it. Do not run your fingers around in there when the motor

If you cannot find it, you likely will when it gets a bit worse.

Perhaps, the timing chain clatters so much, it "sounds like a diesel" and
being ignorant of what he actually has posted it as "diesel".

You know, because it's "Mercedes" and they are "all diesels".

best I've ever had but top 10 for sure. After lunch they asked "Wasn't that the
best BBQ you've ever had?" I should have just said yes but I let the truth get
the better of me."Well where is the best BBQ you've ever had?"Honestly its
Buck's Naked BBQ, Freeport, Maine.
Thats when I became the "Gawd damn Yankee, don't know a gawd damn thing about

For something that spins at constant speed HF is probably fine. I bought one of
their <$20 grinders last summer, the switch is kinda cheap and crappy but the

The whole point of an I6, IMO, is the perfect primary and secondary balance of
the design, something shared with V-12s and 90° V-Twins. Nothing else is like
being able to set a coin on top of a running engine and having it stay put.

Were the brown tubes on the wrong way around? That at least

I plucked brown tubes and checked them for goodness, then installed them

IF it failed in the open position wouldn't it be open all the time even without

after the first start as the vac is building up. Then it gets held open all the
time, till the vac all goes away, which would give power problems when driving
also. It also shows that all the vac line routing on the engine is screwed up
cause the EGR isn't supposed to get vac except at specific times controlled by
the valves on top of the valve cover. At least on the 617.

What I want to know is did Clay change the brown lines around?

I can't really see enough exhaust getting through that small hole in the EGR to
cause hard starting but then the proof seems to be there. Also gives another
reason to block the EGR.

straightedge guide from cut line by whatever distance from the edge of the
router base to the bit and clamp it all with the cut line just hanging
over the edge of your "bench" so it is mostly supported. A router cut is
very clean and will be dead straight (or as straight as your guide). I
find a saw does tear the cut line a bit, even a fine tooth blade, so I have
always used a router for the cuts.

Rick - question on the meaning of "both sides". Do you mean tape on the

Tape
down, draw the line over the tape, and make cut through the tape, right?

I'm pretty sure that all the pieces I'm considering will either be on a
cabinet side (end of the kitchen island) or inside (under the kitchen
sink)
so I won't have the luxury of finishing the edge with a router. Flip side
of that coin is that the edges will be either caulked or covered with
trim.
