Re: [MBZ] crazy prices for service at the stealer

2018-01-30 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I used to have a good dealer 150 miles away. As is usually the case, it
was a very old dealership, having sold studebakers since cars had wood
spokes, long before Stue began importing MBs. Like most of the good old
dealers, they are long gone. Now the stealers have to have (and
support) new expensive glass showrooms on expensive real estate.

Same with BMW motorcycle stealers. I had a great dealer about 90 miles
away. It was in an old building that had been added onto many times.
They only had 1 to 3 machines, new or used in the (dusty) showroom. An
8' garage door open meant they were open. They grove gravel trucks to
pay for keeping the doors open. They stocked everything I ever needed.
They were knowledgeable and always fair. BMW kicked them out for a
fancy showroom 35 miles further in a bigger town, where they stocked
maybe 20 new BMWs (10 more than they could sell) and went under in a
few years. Rinse, wash, repeat

I knew of a couple great old BMW car dealers too. They got forced out
of business by BMW before they got around to making motorcycles part of
the "luxury" image.

Well another point of view I have a dealer about 50 miles,away- Carriage
House of New London CT that is,honest & very competent. They have been
straight with me & a MB friend for 15 years. Of course there is a nearby
stealer that does oversell.

All my cool tools are bolted to logs standing on end. Grinder, buffer,
vac pump, chop saw. I have to haul them out of my tiny shed, onto my
tiny porch, use them, then stuff them back into the hole. No room for
a pallet to hold a tire do-hickey. I have to use the welding table as
picnic table space is so dear.

Re: [MBZ] Not even sure what to say about this

2018-01-30 Thread clay monroe via Mercedes
We are older, and more likely to take time to remedy issues on our own, instead
of paying somebody else to make a car pretty. The Classic Center will rebuild
cars, but I would not be able to drive one, for fear I might hurt it. Buy low
and wrench value back into the cars. It takes a lot of work to turn a driver
into an exceptional example though.

I do like being a bottom feeder. I got Allen about a year ago for free. I
gave the guy a dollar. Over the past 11 months I have been able to turn her
into a $3899 value, according to the insurance adjuster. If I can reupholster
the seats, put pretty Bundts and fresh rubber, and finish up the paint work, I
could have a $4k car.

Re: [MBZ] How much for a 560 SEL?

2018-01-30 Thread clay monroe via Mercedes
Not really all that hot of an example. Too much rust and corrosion. The
repairs are a pale approximation of Jim’s microwave magic. The tires look like
somebodies pooch marked them, and I question the value of putting Tex into the
car where the rest is leather. The cruise control does not function, I doubt
the AC functions, and then there is the issue with Djet. Being built 11/73,
there is also the transitionary nature of parts. A person will really need the
VIN to be able to establish just which parts were used where. Are they the
1972 parts or the 1974 standards?

All that whining being made, I find that the current bid is just about spot on.

All my cool tools are bolted to logs standing on end. Grinder, buffer, vac
pump, chop saw. I have to haul them out of my tiny shed, onto my tiny porch,
use them, then stuff them back into the hole. No room for a pallet to hold a
tire do-hickey.I have to use the welding table as picnic table space is so
dear.

Nobody wants a 380SLC. Only the one year, but so many compromises to that

I tried the long blade to see if I could section the tires. That was a bit
unwieldy. The blade was also getting too close to the face of the rim, so I
will wait for the rain to stop and switch to a much shorter blade to trim the
sidewalls down.

Wow, that was a poor choice, but not as poor as some of my choices. I can think

The other thing with these machines is that they are really very basic.
As such, there is little need to mount them inside a garage. Any solid
concrete pad should do. The weather ought not to hurt them much. If it

I mounted it to a 48" x 48" pallet, with a piece of 3/4 inch plywood
covering the pallet and through bolts that caught both the pallet and the
plywood.. Tire work is done standing on the pallet with zero issues. The
machine has manual bead break for both front and back sides, and a lever
bar that's about 4' long.

Tip: Buy a gallon of Ruglyde rubber lubricant and the mop, slop it on the
bead of the tire, both sides, AND the rim... it makes remounts go easy. I
also use it for dismounts to help old rubber slip off the rims. Failing
that, a stiff mix of dish soap and a brush will give good service... don't
be shy, slop it on.

A search of the inter-web will pull up a YouTube video that compares the
Harbor Freight tire tool vs the Northern Tool unit... Northern Tool wins

Why don't we just leave that subject alone?
Too depressing unless we want to change the rules to  see who can tell
the tallest tale and not put in true facts.

[MBZ] OT - Viktor Schauberger

2018-01-30 Thread Mountain Man via Mercedes
Okay - this is Dr. Craig arena, or maybe not? physics, etc. okiebenz
has its share of information geeks, so have at it and tell us what you
know?

Schauberger was a naturalist forestry guy in Austria 100-years ago
that evidently got to know how things operate by spending time
outdoors?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXPrLGUGZsw

"It is possible to regulate watercourses over any given distance
without embankment works; to transport timber and other materials,
even when heavier than water, for example ore, stones, etc., down the
centre of such water-courses; to raise the height of the watertable in
the surrounding countryside and to endow the water with all those
elements necessary for the prevailing vegetation."
"Furthermore it is possible in this way to render timber and other
such materials non-inflammable and rot resistant; to produce drinking
and spa-water for man, beast and soil of any desired composition and
performance artificially, but in the way that it occurs in Nature; to
raise water in a vertical pipe without pumping devices; to produce any
amount of electricity and radiant energy almost without cost; to raise
soil quality and to heal tuberculosis, cancer and a variety of
physical disorders."

"... the practical implementation of this ... would without doubt
signify a complete reorientation in all areas of science and
technology. By application of these new found laws, I have already
constructed fairly large installations in the spheres of log-rafting
and river regulation, which as is known, have functioned faultlessly
for a decade, and which today still present insoluble enigmas to the
various scientific disciplines concerned."

https://www.alivewater.com/viktor-schauberger

Fascinating?
Certainly someone reading OkieBenz has heard of this guy?
Repulsine flying saucer was developed by Schauberger at concentration
camp Mauthausen.
Use translate.google to read in english, or... read it in de:

Wrong color - Kyle's is diamond blue.

I might want to take a look but VA is a big state. Also, that "nickel
sized rust" rear the rear quarters is a b*tch to repair properly. And how
stupid is it not to fix a rear window regulator?? And the dash cracks are
a real looser as is the lack of a child's third seat. OTOH I think I'll
pass..

Health care in the Arab states is usually top notch, except for maybe places
like Yemen... The contracts I considered back in the day included health
insurance and disability, much like you would find here.

2018-01-30 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Heck, if the spouse is willing, go to Abu Dhabi. Then you’ll be able to retire
in style when you’re done. Not only that, with a month off and a $12k annual
travel stipend, see the world on your time off. Do some Viking River Cruises
in Europe. That’s pretty much what the people I know who did it did.

It’s not apples to apples with the domestic job. After the IRS gets done
squeezing you you’ll be lucky to have half that unless you have Mitch managing
your accounts.

I’m speaking with my super flamboyant, Uber gay tax man next week to discuss
this stuff to ensure I know exactly what’s up.
My conditional offer has 31 days off a year, $12K per year family travel
stipend.
The company is paying for everything. It’s nuts. My quandary is a plant in
Michigan is offering nearly the exact same money, but I have to pay my living
expenses and the first $108K is not tax free.

What to do??

But a NJ bidder and a FL bidder got in quite a battle over it.
The guy from Jaimeland ended up with it for $2950 plus fees.
That feels like BATmoney to me.

Sure is a lot of BAT chatter for a car with a $3000 bid. Rust was a huge

Abu Dhabi? That would be *really* interesting from a cultural perspective.
I'd like to have an offer from out there, give me a new outlook on life and
such. Probably wouldn't want to live there forever though, but the amount
of money has got to have created some really crazy differences.

sustainability after admitting that he had known about experiments in which
monkeys were locked in small chambers and exposed to diesel exhaust.
The Volkswagen emissions scandal explained

Thomas Steg, a former government spokesman, who worked for German chancellor
Angela Merkel and her predecessor Gerhard Schröder, is the first person to be
relieved of his duties as VW said it was “drawing the consequences” of the
scandal which has rocked both the government and industry.

The company initially tried to distance itself from the institute which
commissioned the tests, the European Research Group of Environment and Health
in the Transport Sector (EUGT), a car lobby group funded by Volkswagen, DAIMLER
and BMW. But it is now known that VW managers were informed about the testing
before and after it was carried out.

Re: [MBZ] Clay's tire issues could be resolved with this

Need a means of bolting to the floor in a manner that permits removal. Must be
some sort of threaded insert for concrete.

I suppose another option is to bolt it to the floor in a corner and stack loose
tires over it so that it doesn't waste storage space. But then you can't walk
around the tire, you might have to stop and rotate the wheel in the machine as
you work around the rim.

That looks half decent, but then he wouldn't be able to get this $500
dizzel.

Speaking of which, I think the intake manifold and EGR is all gunked up,
I gotta get it off and see if I can clean it up, maybe do the bypass on
the EGR, and get this thing running.

Re: [MBZ] Kaleb Could Have Driven This Home...

2018-01-30 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Why?

The 4Matic system on the W210s is trouble-free and pretty bulletproof compared
to the earlier version on the W124.

The only real problem with 4Matic on the W210 is that it complicates a number
of jobs that would otherwise be relatively simple, like front shocks and motor
mounts.
