Re: [MBZ] Dielectric Grease

2018-05-19 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
There is a nice little tool you might find useful. It is basically a piece
of flat stock with two bends in it.
The lower bend has a "round hole with one side cut out" so it will slip
around the spark plug just above the hex nut portion, below the wire boot.
Then a long flat, followed by a bend in opposite direction, which forms a
"handle" you can get a grip on much better than trying to pull on the wire
boot.

When you pull on the wire boot, it acts like a Chinese handcuff and
actually tightens it's grip on the plug..
When you pull on the tool... it "pushes" on the bottom of the plug cuff
which unseats the plug wire boot from the bottom and breaks it loose.

They are a cheap tool... but you to look / ask for themGive it a try.

Also, I use a dab of silicone grease on the edge of the spark plug boot. It
keeps the boot from "welding" it's self to the plug. The kind I use is
swimming pool supply stuff... Hasn't failed me yet.

2018-05-19 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I thought the challenge was still open

Clue: When you pull the rope, the knot releases completely and your rope
slips out of the tail wheel cleanly... as long as the aircraft pulls on the
knot... it only gets tighter, can't slip.

I'm not sure I can do a verbal picture with any success.

Actually, the larger one does not go there; there is no place for the
bent tab to go.

I noticed I had two brackets and two short bolts left over and got to
looking at the old power steering pump. There is one tapped hole on the
back of the pump. When the larger bracket is placed there, the bent tab
has some place to go. With it mounted there on the car, there is a bundle
of electrical wires which goes right by it and which can be secured to
it, so that indeed is the place where it goes.

The smaller bracket and the other short bolt are currently unaccounted
for.

Thanks.

I'm thinking the larger one goes at the back of the bolt which goes
through the upper pump mounting hole underneath the rectangular washers
so it can hold a hose or something.

[MBZ] Jack Stands

2018-05-19 Thread Craig via Mercedes
A long while back, someone recommended Esco 10498 jack stands. I looked
at them on-line and then bought a pair from Amazon
(https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0019JVIPM?ref_=pe_527950_33920250&th=1).

Here are some photographs comparing them to the FLAPS jack stands that I
have had for awhile. They seem much safer and will go higher, too.

High-voltage laughs at your pathetic 'insulating' grease. It'll punch
right through

[MBZ] Dielectric Grease

2018-05-19 Thread Jerry Herrman via Mercedes
I need expert advice. I had a terrible time removing the spark plug
(ignition) wires from the spark plugs on a 60's GM car. That was on the
easy-to-get-to wires. The ones down and behind other items were even harder
to get off, because of the awkward position of my hands. I could only use
the pulling power of two fingers to grasp two of them. I ended up using a
small vice grip and a small pry bar to get them off. I decided to find out
what I could apply so that the wires will be easier to remove in the future.
Asking around, the universal recommendation seemed to be to use a product
sold at all of the auto parts stores. However, that product is dielectric
grease. It is my understanding that dielectric grease is an insulator, a non
conductor. After applying dielectric grease to the inside of the boot and to
the porcelain (avoiding the metal tip and the metal terminal on the wire),
the wires are still hard to remove and put back on. It is the metal to metal
contact between the end of the ignition wire and the nipple on the top of
the plug that is making it difficult to remove and put back on. Should I be
applying some sort of lubricant to the tip of the spark plug? If so, what is
recommended?

Also, what do I need to know about dielectric grease and where to apply,
and not to apply it? If there is a good You Tube video that discusses this,
I am interested.

I'll thank you in advance for your suggestions.

I'd rather have a 2017-2018 diesel stick shift, those are the only Cruze that
were EPA rated over 50mpg hwy. There's one at IAAI in Pittsburgh with 5k on the
odometer, but I've already got too many cars.

My 2016 has no warranty, it was totaled for SRS damage, which was far more
expensive than the body damage. Nice looking car with Bose and sunroof. I put
used airbags and new seatbelts from the dealer in it. A $25k car with 14,500
miles for under $10k.
They're giving them away right now so resale value is in the toilet, a new 2018
would cost 18-19k, used never wrecked 2016 would be around 13-14k. A $10k car
would have 60-75k on the odo and no warranty, I'd rather have a rebuilt title,
and 1/4 the miles. Aside from crash repairs, my car is 100% dealer maintained
with GM synthetic oil, but if still I own it for the 3rd oil change I'll DIY it
with Mobil One.

Maybe you should buy this Premier in Detroit.
https://www.iaai.com/vehicle?itemid=28043876
Can you drive a work car with a crease down the right side, or would you have
to fix it? Or you could call it pre-Regina'd. Honey, I got you a new Chevy with
leather...
Premiers don't get the same MPG, mainly because the tires aren't LRR, but you
could probably find some kid with an LT who would pay you to swap wheels with
them.
Avis is the seller, so it might have a 100,000 mile fleet warranty like my
Hertz 2017. Normal powertrain warranty on 2nd generation cars is only 60k.
You'll need to get set up with a broker to bid, they aren't allowing private
individuals to bid on this one.

2nd generation gas. 1.4L direct injection.
Lighter, more aerodynamic, more efficient engines than the old body style with
the iron block port injected engines. And I've got 50psi in the factory low
rolling resistance tires. It looks like it can get 55mpg at 55mph, my stick
Saturn gets 45mpg at 45mph. Car and Driver got 70mpg in a 2017 diesel at 55mph.
Some people have gotten 60mpg with the first generation ECO cars, but that's
probably hypermiling driving techniques. Mine are a couple hundred pounds
lighter than an ECO, but don't have manny tranny.

My current tank since I filled it in March with half premium and half regular,
the 80 mile hwy trip last week raised the indicated tank MPG from 43 to 47.
It's possible I could get 625 miles on this tank. If I had a first gen
(2014-2015) diesel, I could cram 18 gallons in it and I'd be trying for a 1000
mile tank. In this weather I should probably be running straight premium. It's
got 10:1 compression and can hit 20psi of boost. I can't believe GM recommends
87 octane, they retard the timing like crazy in warm weather on 87.

With the E250 Bluetec priced beyond my means, they are the only viable modern
alternative to a VW TDI.

It all started last June when I saw a 2014 Cruze CTD (Clean Turbo Diesel, which
unfortunately uses the same initials as Cummins Turbo Diesel) about 100 miles
away, 90k on the odo, dark green paint over tan leather interior, rare color
combo but exactly the one I'd want,$8999 at a used car dealer in Ohio.
I thought about it for a day or two, do I want to go that high for a car which
will run out of powertrain warranty in a few thousand miles? And it sold over
the weekend, they don't last long at those prices, or didn't a year ago anyway.

I started watching the CoPart auctions, if I won't pay retail for one, maybe
I'll build one instead (still watching for an opportunity there, which is why
I'm looking at that abused car in Lansing for a drivetrain/suspension donor to
convert a Cruze ECO to diesel). Every diesel went for 150-200% of what I was
willing to pay, none of them were going to be under $8k after repairs.

Then I bid on a few gassers. If I could get one for enough less than a diesel
than I could hope to save on fuel with the diesel... A couple of times I was
the 2nd highest bidder, but never the highest. I'd set my price and stop there.
The dealer who's credentials I was borrowing for the auctions told me I needed
to bid more.

Finally, there was a Hertz owned two month old 2017 Cruze RS, clean title, 2085
miles, in Cleveland. Literally two months old, made in June, bought by me in
August. I set my price, and once again got outbid. OK, I'll go $200 more, this
is a brand new car. The 4th time I went $200 more, it was mine, for more than I
wanted to pay.

That led to me shopping for parts cars to afford to fix up my new purchase,
which is how I found the red 2016 3 weeks later, the car I should have bought
in the first place. So now I have two late model cars, one with 2k on the odo
and needing repairs 8 months after I bought it, one with 14k on the odo after
I've driven it 2000 miles that I want to sell to raise money to fix up the 2k
car.

Last week, I took the 2016 out for my first drive in 70 degree weather,
commuting in winter I could only manage 38-40mpg. It still has winter gas in it
though. Took it to Dewitt for pizza. Followed 50 yards behind a semi going
68-69mph for most of the way there with a 10mph wind more or less behind me.
Raised the car's lifetime maximum 25 mile average to 59.9mpg indicated.
Going home into the wind, I was only getting about 47mpg indicated, maybe 45mpg
in real life. Now this is what I wanted when I bought these things.

The red car is just too perfect, bright colored and spotless to drive on the
dirt road I live on. I just need money, I'm getting ready to take many detailed
photos and put it on eBay for $9500 starting bid. Or you can come get it for
$9500. Has a crack in the plastic grille and scratches on two wheels. Never had
a dent or scratch on the body besides the crash damage which is fully repaired
and nearly all of that was damage to bolt on parts which have been replaced.

Mitch.
