[MBZ] My 91 300D Rear Hub etc.

2018-07-13 Thread Larry Turner via Mercedes
Hi Guys,  for a change things are looking up.  I tried to start the
subject 300D and found the battery was dead and refused to take a
charge.  It was bought in 2014 and had almost 1000 CCA's but dead is
dead.  So I went into my garage (slowly as usual on my walker) ;-) and
found the battery that had been in my 78 240D still had an acceptable
amount of Volts in it so after a quick charge for good measure, I
removed the old battery and installed the even older battery - it had
been bought in 2010 and even after sitting in my garage for pushing 4
years (IIRC) it was "alive"! (As in "Young Frankenstein")  Once
connected it fired on the 1st compression stroke.  It really amazed me!
Even after not being started since late Dec 2017.

The next step is to get a state inspection and while there I'll ask if I
can take some photos of the supposed rust damage my Indy told me about.
I can then post the photos and get your opinion. They're busy today so
maybe Monday?

Then, depending on what we find, I will want to repair the rear wheel
bearing on the starboard (r) side.  As suggested by those of you more
knowledgeable than me,  I am considering replacing the bearing/hub
carrier completely and not going to the trouble of having the old
bearing replaced (since I would still have to R the hub).

So, to (finally) get to my point, does anyone have any spare right side
hubs they would like to part with?  Timing is not critical - we have the
Explorer to drive for now.  But I am hoping we can use the MB for
everyday driving and save the Explorer for trips to the range.

Anyone have one or know where I might find a hub?  I have been putting
out feelers to recyclers looking for hubs and  only got one specific
reply.  Besides, I like options.   ;-)

Thanks gang!

You could have spent 3 times the asking price and still had a good deal.

I see those go for the $2,000 mark if they come available... They were made
to work hard, back when men did such a thing.

If you ever decide you don't want it... drop me a note, we will make a deal.

[MBZ] Why I work on my own cars

2018-07-13 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes

Yesterday I took one of our company cars into the tire place to get new tires
and an oil change. Also the ac was not cooling but compressor was kicking on
and off (cutting out too quick), so it has a charge but is low. I pick car up
today. They got tires and oil change done but could not do ac. They said when
they charged it compressor was making loud noises and leaking refrigerant. They
said they just recovered the refrigerant they put in. Ok so I left. As I pull
out I think to myself I should pop the hood to make sure they did not screw
anything up. I did not do this. Anyway, ac compressor is still kicking on just
fine as it did before and does not make any noise, just cuts out too quick. I
guess I will hook it up to my machine and do it.

I get about 3 miles from home and start hearing strange noises. I pull over to
discover coolant spraying all over the place. They left the radiator cap loose,
just sitting on the opening not tightened. Car did not get hot at all up to
this point. I tighten it and continue home. About half a mile from the house
the temp started climbing probably due to it now being low on fluid. I turned
heater on and it came back down. I called them up and ripped them a new rear
orifice. Also called our fleet company and let them know.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Blackfly

2018-07-13 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Having earned a living as a professional crop duster in restricted category
aircraft for over 15 years [almost 1/2 of that spraying at night], I have a
true appreciation of how quickly "Everything can go wrong" with an
airplane, in flight.

This electronic "airplane", computer controlled, does nothing to build my
confidence.
Anyone here ever experience an electrical failure with your computer or
smart phone? A "software glitch"... at 500 ft altitude, you have 4 seconds
to fix the problem, then you die... at 1000 ft altitude, you have less than
10 seconds [estimated] Feeling good yet? Up for the challenge?

Yeah... thought not... where do I send flowers for the burial?

A new way to cheat The Reaper, at least for awhile maybe. But it does look like
fun.

I’m thinking with suitable electronic nannies it should be able to be
reasonably safe, except for that part where something breaks or dies and it
falls out of the sky. But maybe it could have a parachute like the Cirrus
planes to help out.

Trained GA pilots stall themselves into the ground more often than we'd like,
but what about these things that work like grown up drone copters?

Any global power failure would result in an uncontrolled descent without wings.
Not to mention the need for a LOT of thrust, thrust to weight ratios in excess
of 1:1.
