I would empty the tank as much as possible, then remove the sender. With a 2 x 2 placed in the opening where the sender goes, tap/bang/beat on the 2x2 with a 3# sledge or dead blow hammer to push the bottom of the tank out. I seem to recall doing this on my 1979 300TD for much the same reason

Useful idea: empty the fuel tank by directing the fuel return line into a separate container (at the cigar hose) and then start / run the engine until it stops from lack of fuel. Wear goggles or a face shield to keep rust and dirt from falling into your eyes. Don't use the blue wrench! I'll
