I have seen both of these in the PnP. While the Kia has shown great increases
in build and quality. The Mercedes cars no longer are quality examples we know
and drive. They have become on par with a Hyundai or Kia of comparable
vintage. Sad truth, which is why very few of us will see a Mercedes younger
than the W124 reach the exalted million mile mark.

Re: [MBZ] 300CD door handle

2018-12-07 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
If it is similar to a regular 123, there is one screw that holds it in.
If it has a plastic "pocket" under the latch, you need a sharp stick, or
a small screwdriver, etc to pull that out from its catches.  Then you
will see the screw.   Release rod is just held on with a clip.   Easy!

Back in the 1990s, a friend of mine in CT claimed that Martha walked into a gun
store while he was there. She was looking for somebody to come to her
neighborhood and shoot the deer who were eating her ornamental plantings and
tearing up her landscaping. They had to clue her in on a few details, like game
seasons, bag limits, and especially bans on shooting in residential areas.

There was a recent case in which a LEO was prosecuted for that.
He was called to the scene to provide a salvage tag for the deer.
He refused to issue a salvage tag (minor dereliction of duty), and then was
seen later sawing the antlers off of it without issuing himself a tag first
(big fish and game violation).

In WI if you hit a deer you have to buy a tag if you want to keep it.

I hit a deer years ago with my brand new Chevy Suburban. The deer didn’t
survive, and while I was surveying the damage to my truck two kids in a K car
pull over, grab the carcass, toss it in their trunk and take off. I’m up
thinking that, “That was nice of them, saves the highway guys the hassle of
cleaning up.”

When I call the sheriff’s office to report the damage they were more worried
about who took the deer. The sheriff wanted a description of the two guys and
their car rather than filling out an accident report for me.

All the EMS back in those days came from the plant in Belgium, where all Saab
rust buckets were born.
I had to have the body welded on my '77 EMS at the upper shock mounts too.
Ever put your foot to the floor and leave it there?
Mine would hit 7,000 rpm in 4th gear, well beyond redline and around 123 mph.
I cracked a valve lifter doing that, oops.

10,000 bambis a year hit, x what? $3500 damage to each vehicle on
average?  That is $35,000,000 a year in damages to vehicles just in MD,
a state not known for deer hunting or big deer.

If there are 20 states at that rate, the damage would be $700 million a
year.   I sispect there are more than 200,000 bambi hits a year, plus
this does not include the ones where bambi didn't die, or wandered off
the right of way before croaking.   Safe to say that over a billion a
year damage done to vehicles.

An EMS or better yet, a turbo, would have gone for more, but the installation
of the later 5 speed would seem to be desirable.

Maybe the old 8 valve 900s get no love, like the pre-turbo W123 diesels?

If it were a 99 model from 1978 instead of a 900 from 1979 I think it would
have gone a lot higher.

(they still had 99s in 1979 and 1980, but they were value leaders and the ones
ones I remember were two door sedans, the higher trims, EMS/GLE/TURBO, went to
the 900 chassis in 1979)

I have a W126 battery tray with some surface rust on the bottom of the tray,
the rest is intact. It would clean up nice after being media blasted.

If anyone is interested in it PM me and we’ll talk.

I have never had a 123 so tell me, where is the battery and why does the
leak show up in the back seat area? Is the battery not under the hood? I
know on some of the newer cars, it is under the back seat, but I did not
think that to be the case on the 123.

So after removing battery and tray, I did find a smallish hole. I cleaned it up

[MBZ] OT: Compost from road kill

2018-12-07 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
MARYLANDHighway agency turns its roadkill compost into turfPublished:
Friday, December 7, 2018

Deer are acting up for mating season — and while that means more collisions
with motorists and more roadkill, for the Maryland State Highway
Administration, it also means more compost.

Spokesman Charlie Gischlar said the administration has been turning dead
deer into compost since 2004, when the program started in Carroll County,
Md. Now, there's a second facility in Frederick County that helps in the
effort.

The recipe is simple: deer carcasses, manure and wood chips. Let that
decompose long enough, and you've got compost.

Gary Felton, an associate professor and agricultural extension specialist
with the University of Maryland for almost 25 years, said the deer
concoction checks all the boxes of a good compost — but it suffers from two
major problems.

"Big bones don't decompose very fast, so you end up with big bones if you
don't sift [the compost]," Felton said. "That's a common thing to do, but
for the State Highway Administration, that means more money."

And the second problem he listed is exactly what you'd imagine: "The
concept that people have of 'yuck, that's a dead body.'"

The deer compost naturally heats up to temperatures between 130 and 160
degrees Fahrenheit when the microbes in the mix are consuming carbon,
Felton said, so the final product is pathogen-free.

Even so, Gischlar said, the mix is only used to enrich native wildflowers
near roads.

Felton, who has advised the administration on their compost, said this year
the mix was also extended to growing turf in medians and beside roads — and
that even though it was safe to use on all plants, those two projects used
up the State Highway Administration's supply of deer compost.

There's no one place to find the number of deer struck by motorists in
Maryland per year, but administration data show that between January and
October of this year, its workers have responded to 9,800 reports of deer
carcasses on state roads.

Gischlar said the deer that are not composted are either buried or given to
outside rendering companies. *— Savannah Williams, Capital News
Service/Associated Press*

[MBZ] Absolutely sickening

2018-12-07 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I am currently at the pnp and there is a 80 300SD sitting here that just
arrived. Totally rust free, interior except for being taken apart is beautiful
and front and rear seats appear to have had the padding replaced not too long
ago. In the back seat is a full set of and records in a huge folder appearing
to go back to when the car was new. Unbelievable. Had lots of work done at the
local Indy here. I wonder where this car turned up from?

An EMS or better yet, a turbo, would have gone for more, but the installation of the later 5 speed would seem to be desirable. Maybe the old 8 valve 900s get no love, like the pre-turbo W123 diesels? If it were a 99 model from 1978 instead of a 900 from 1979 I think it would have gone a lot higher. (they still had 99s in 1979 and 1980, but they were value leaders and the ones ones I remember were two door sedans, the higher trims, EMS/GLE/TURBO, went to the 900 chassis in 1979)Mitch.
