Re: [MBZ] OT - Gas Fireplace replacement

The replacement built in units I am seeing have optional battery units so that
a person remains warm when the end of the world come at 9.4 richters. As long
as there is still pressure in your gas line. Better see about making it a dual
fuel thing and install a 100# tank

[MBZ] 92 500SL

2018-12-19 Thread clay monroe via Mercedes
A friend wants to get rid of his 92 500SL. It has some pretty good nose damage
that made the passenger side airbag deploy, messed up the chin and tweaked the
nose/hood. Condenser and radiator are out of the car. Living in the trunk
now. Headlights are back there as well.

White on ash leather. Tan soft top that has leaking, but functional pistons,
so it does deploy the soft top. Two small age related tears at the folds on
driver side. Seats are comfortable, but passenger has stitching fail in the
middle front leading edge. Must be some related wear on the driver seat that I
am not recalling. Driver seat belt does not retract. Air bag deployment put a
starburst on the windscreen. No leaks into cabin or trunk, as I could find no
water or moisture (and it has been raining to make Noah look like a piker)

California car (just titled in WA 4/18). The tires are fresh from April, and
the wheels look fine. Has 87k on the clock and does drive enough to get you on
a transport and off again. I took it around the block, and it handles well at
low speed. Seems a fine car if you are into the R129. No insurance, so title
is still clean. His mechanic has put new rotors and pads up front. He
replaced the oil pan and tried to adjust/massage the damage caused by the
driver running over a road divider.

What is this car worth? My friend wants to just sell it because he would
rather put his cash toward not fixing the SL.If it were KBB or something, I
would guess it was a horribly low #4, due to damage. Not yet scrap or parts.

I looked on the Bay of Fleas, but those are priced quite high and of better
condition. He has no time or desire to do the parting out work. I figured he
could make an easy $2k selling off the wheels, tops, headlights, and
catastrophic converter. Maybe another 2K for the engine. Is the car worth $4k
as it sits? I am sure somebody with bodywork ability, could bring the car to
$7K.

Not mine, no interest. Just want to be able to provide him with a more
educated opinion so he can price it well enough to get into something else. I
did not pry as to what that might be. Probably another flashy old thing he
does not insure.

yes.  If they'd make one that was long enough to haul 4x8 sheets of
plywood in the back, 10' ladders between the seats, and 12' extension
ladders between the windshield and (closed) rear doors, like my 66 frod
van could back in the day, I'd be interested.  Oh, and it'd have to get
at least 19 mpg, because my frod van could, even in its old age.

In the meantime, i'll suffer along with the dog GC, which does not quite
do any of that.  But it does some things adequately.  Despite the
claims, it does not get 20mpg out  on the highway.  At least, not with
the current excuses for Benzin.

As for reliability, there were teething problems with the 98 and 99, but
most of that got fixed by now, I  believe.  I don't have one, never had
one.  They don't haul enough or get good enough mileage to get me
interested.   However for the folks who want some kind of riceburner
"SUV"  I think it beats the crap out of the riceburners.  MBs, since the
end of the 126, are for foks who want status symbols, they are not for
reliable and/or economical transportation.

At first I couldn't figure out how to get it off without removing the
lift bracket, but after jiggering it around a bit it tilted and slid
right out.  Interestingly the replacement was the same as the one on
there, a "Wahler" I think it was.  I guess it had been replaced at some
point prior too.  It slid in easily too once I got the hang of it.  Only
4 allen screws to tighten down and 2 hoses slid right on.

Looks like NAPA *might* have the proper PS fluid for both the SL600 and
the E300 which is groaning a bit so I guess maybe it wants some
more/better stuff in there.  I'll have to ring them in the morning.
Otherwise I need to get my order up to $50 to get free shipping from FCP
but that will take forever, bah.  If I had known would have put some on
the tstat order. Bah humbug.

yeah that top sounded like explosive bolts or something going off, a bit
disconcerting.  i think you might have been right, probably a switch in
there is probably confused and upsetting the nanny as the thing is
latched down tight.

I noticed the PS fluid reservoir was low, as in almost empty, so I need to
order some of the special sauce. It hides under a plastic cover right behind
the tstat. Glad I discovered its whereabouts.

I cycled the hard top, released it and with some fairly loud machinations it
popped up front and back, so that part seemed to work. Reversed the process, it
pulled down and latched tight front and back so that worked too. The switch is
still red and blinking, I found the code sheet and process for reading the top
signal to determine what the code is (put an LED in particular socket hole on
the diagnostic plug and count the blinks) so I guess I will do that at some
point. In any case it doesn’t look like it will fly off.

Gotta get those spheres on but gonna rain next coupla days. Bah.

I would not want to drive around with it on the roof but getting it up
there and back down should not be a huge problem.

All you need is a 2nd barrel and a pump.

[MBZ] Well that was easy — SL600

2018-12-19 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
New tstat arrived this afternoon. Went and put it on, 10min job. Took longer to
go find some coolant to fill the tank. Test drive showed it right about 85 so I
guess that was it. That is comforting.

Bah.

I guess the GLK naming is like the 300SD naming of the 1990s, people

2018-12-19 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
I’m not saying it’s bad, just that it seems like a vehicle that’s looking for
its market but doesn’t know what that is.

I looked at one a while back and never having been in one I was sort of puzzled
by it. I would have been interested in the cargo capacity, which as Kaleb
mentioned, I can get far more stuff in my W210 wagon. I was done at that
point, as I didn’t see any value in the platform for my needs.

Re: [MBZ] Fairly cheap ML

2018-12-19 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
Dan's criticisms are on point. But the ML is a good fit for me. I don't put on
many miles, so the fuel economy is not a big issue for me. I also have an F-250
powerstroke crew cab, so the lack of cargo space is also not an issue. The AWD,
good road clearance, high and comfortable seating with great visibility make
this an excellent vehicle for poor road conditions (heavy rain, partial
flooding) like I have experienced driving through the Columbia R. gorge. It's
also perfect for local grocery shopping, fits compact parking spaces. In my
local market MLs are a lot cheaper than E class wagons or sedans.

Also, reliability and build quality are high on my criteria list!

Greg

Re: [MBZ] Fairly cheap ML

2018-12-19 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Yeah I was kinda surprised at this one I got, it really isn't that big.
The 2012 ML seemed bigger, maybe it was the later design or something.

Supposedly the AWD system makes them pretty good in the slippery stuff
and off-road (and they have some good ground clearance) but I never
drove in anything like that with one so really can't say. I'm sure
Mipsie never takes hers off-road except to the parking area at the
soccer field when she takes Kammerrin, MacQenzi, Xanthippe, and DahQota
to soccer practice.

sell it or not. Should be getting a 4 matic wagon soon so not sure I would need
an ML also.

The way I understand it, a GL is a LWB ML, and a GLK is a ML.
I guess the GLK naming is like the 300SD naming of the 1990s, people developed
a dislike of the 350SD/ML, so they called it something else.

I'm not sure. I think it's "fair" - but I usually buy a lot
more - quantity and items. Some of their closeout deals are
really good.

Dunno yet. It’s a two piece setup, I haven’t put it on the bench yet to even
determine I& it works. I wonder who fixes these things? Guess I’ll have to do
some Googling.

Bad. I’ve been told there’s really no “good” MLs, just some better than

Do any of you folks wear hearing aids?
I would have to listen without the hearing aids or I would get feedback etc.

Wow! Thanks for the good info. Looks like I'll be keeping the Prius and buying
a new $3000 traction battery when and if it conks out. The Prius only has 80+K
miles, and that's easy around the county miles mostly at 40-50 mph. Prius
traction batteries usually last well over 100K miles, and some are over 200K
miles with no problems.

The Prius, and the two Mercedes, will undoubtedly outlive me.

Gerry---90 next year and still pretty healthy between broken bones.
