I own a 4 lb sledge hammer and an anvil which provides proper adjustment to
any device which tries to spy on me.. Seems to work rather well...
completely cures all it's issues, and provides some rather satisfying venue
for any frustration caused by the device having invaded my privacy.

2019-01-18 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I don't think it is a euro.  Crank windows are rare, but it has acc, MB
tex, and what appears to be usa bumpers.  the euro lights are easy to
install.  The VIN should tell for sure if it is MBNA or yuro.  Usual
things. look for rust, condition of suspension, drive train, steering
linkages, etc.

THe tail lights are not yellowed.   It appears the suspension bushings
are in good condition, or higher than factory.  Either indicates the
rubber is not rotten.

Happy Hunting!

2019-01-18 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Prices are all over the place for a tuner, I see them starting for about
$20 and going up over $100. Get a cheap monitor somewhere with a VGA input
or HDMI input, would probably work just fine for a POTV (plain old TV).
No smarts - no spyware, but a remote control so you don't have to get up
off the couch to change channels.

One of the cheap cheap tuners had a USB receptacle for storage device and
DVR capability, so you can record Dr Phil and watch at your leisure.

Naples is probably one of the best used Mercedes markets there is for really,
really nice examples. The independent dealers down there have made a cottage

kind of weird and the accelerator linkage was sticky, it'd stick in most any

makes for a lot of pedal pressure.
Anyway I shut 'er down and determined it wasn't the pedal, then strangely the
problem went away but the dang thing WOULD NOT restart. Crap.
I left it plugged in and we went to run parts and have lunch, an hour later I
put the heat gun on the fuel filter until it was warm to the touch, the engine
started with just a touch on the key...
Guess there was a little water in the fuel line, could a little ice jam up the
IP internally? We added some Power Service and I ran it for awhile, the fuel
filter gets quite warm in operation so the engine must recirculate warm fuel to
it.
We'll know more, Monday its supposed to be wicked cold, like 5F for the high,

One would think that the fellow placing the ad could tell the difference
between an automatic and a manual transmission.

Given that observation, if it truly is a manual transmission, suggest to
him that a manual in that model is likely worth nothing and thus the car
is worth $50 but would be worth the $500 if only it was an automatic.

Can't hurt to try and see how dumb he is.

[MBZ] Stupid groomer

2019-01-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Big snowstorm due here this weekend so we went to prep the groomers today. I
was surprised, the ASV didn't want to start even though it was only about 25F.
I plugged it in and it started after about 15 minutes on the heat but sounded
kind of weird and the accelerator linkage was sticky, it'd stick in most any
position you put it in. That weird, I lubricated it a few months ago. This
thing has a huge amount of moving parts to connect the go pedal up front to the
IP in the rear AND the hydraulic pump that makes it move, the go pedal
essentially pushes a hydraulic lever and pulls the IP at the same time which
makes for a lot of pedal pressure.
We added some Power Service and I ran it for awhile, the fuel
filter gets quite warm in operation so the engine must recirculate warm fuel to
it.
We'll know more, Monday its supposed to be wicked cold, like 5F for the high,
I'll plug in first thing in the morning...

Re: [MBZ] Cheap Resto mod 450 SL C on BAT

2019-01-18 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Interesting BAT comment from an SL C connoisseur:
iMikelikesMint 47

*As an owner of a 1980 450SLC, I like to comment when one comes available
on BaT. The state of the SLC market reflects the cost of restoring one to a
decent condition. You can define “decent” according to your needs. I
checked and there are probably 25 450SLCs available for sale on various
platforms like Craigslist, Hemmings, and eBay. I would guess that the
majority of the offerings have as much wrong with them like this one. Its
the state of the SLC market. They were unloved and abused leaving a very
small percentage of the 61,000 manufactured in excellent condition.
Recently, a 1-owner SLC sold on BaT for $26,000 (a steal) and another sold
or remained unsold with a bid around $4,000. With all that said, know what
you are getting into if you want this one badly because it is more than
just sourcing a set of Bundts, a Becker Mexico and a steering wheel.*

Not the case for my Android. I don't have a mobile data plan (Voice/SMS
only) and I can still use speech-to-text to avoid typing in text
messages, even when I'm not in range and connected to WiFi.

It's slower and not as accurate as when I'm online, but it does work
fairly well.

Re: [MBZ] Internet and car security. Was: Buying a battery for a diesel

2019-01-18 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
Our older Panasonic flat screen is a "semi" smart TV - it needs a dongle
plugged into it for internet connection. We feed it via the HDMI port from
a dedicated old laptop that is internet connected. AFASK, the HDMI
connection is one way from the laptop to the TV. Thus, the PC acts as a
buffer between the TV and the world (not that the laptop doesn't have it's
own privacy issues . . .).

[MBZ] Internet and car security. Was: Buying a battery for a diesel

2019-01-18 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes

So if the TV is not listed as "smart", then can we assume that it will not be
collecting data?
Thanks,
Gerry

P.S. Another security concern is the ability of police and others with the
necessary equipment to access the information stored in cars according to one
source.

There should be ways to prevent the collection of data in modern cars, but I
haven't been able to find any.

If I could still keep my '83 Mercedes running, or if there was a reasonable
Merz mechanic locally, I'd still be driving them instead of the "modern" car
I'm driving.

to tell from afar) the car looked quite nice, body is nice, didn’t hobble out

Agreed.   W113 in 1964 W114/W115  (The /8) 1968 for Mercedes and then
the W116 in 1972.

Although the W113 shared front suspension components with the 110/111.
