I'd wrap a nylon rope around the upper half of the post 3 or more turns,
then tie it around one fork. Take the bolts loose, then lift the post
off the studs. You can then lay it down with the forklift, and put it
on the forks.
But a 2" web strap will work too. you still want 3+ wraps.

If the engine has not been replaced (need proof), I'd just budget that in.
Ask your favorite indy for a quote. A very nice upgrade would be an OM606
turbo with intercooler, but keep the injection pump from the original
engine so you avoid the headache of the computer-controlled IP from the
donor.
