might be better off with brazing with brass
rods. Usually pretty strong in cast iron.
Lots of old engine blocks were fixed with

Thanks guys, I think I need to find a wiring diagram for the thermostat, so
I can figure out how to isolate the air handler from the thermostat for the
wires that precisely control the heat strip function.
Thermostat is from 1994, it is a Honeywell T874R 1384 with base Q67L 1454.

On cast iron, I have had some success with nickel rod. How about bronze or
brass brazing rod? Is that effective for cast iron?

Sounds like a bad wire from thermostat to the unit. Mine did that once except
in ac mode, would not shut off. Turned out rats chewed the wires.

Check for a blinking LED on the control board. If there is one, the
number of blinks, short-long, etc. should decode into a trouble
diagnosis. The decode chart should be in your owner's manual, and also
usually on a sticker inside the service access cover.
