These are the ones I bought.
https://www.amazon.com/Bright-Trailer-Motorhome-Ceiling-Interior/dp/B0761TSXF4/

My notes.

It's a thick PCB so no mechanical conversion to the lamp socket.

These are the "daylight white". There seems to also be a "warm
white".

That listing is for 20 of them. I put in 16 and am quite
pleased. In examining the circuit, it appears to have a DC-to-DC
voltage regulator which means it will put out full light even if
the battery gets low and it won't be damaged if the battery charger
gets carried away and over-charges. It also means it won't work
on a dimmer.

It also works with either lead as "+" - which is good since all
the light is on one side.

It's hard to compare brightness since the ones I got are a
"daylight" white and the original incandescent are very yellow in
comparison. But the new LEDs seem to be a bit brighter.

I can't yet say how they work long term 'cause they have less than
50 hours on them, but as of right now I'm quite pleased! Much
less power (battery) used, and much cooler (no chance of melting
the socket) - and for a price of just over $1 each.

[MBZ] OM60x belt tensioner

2019-02-18 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

it is time...again.   1987 300D OM603

I knocked out the bearing.  It is a dual row ball bearing, FAG 565593. I
can't find that number anywhere.  I suspect it is a special bearing just
for this application.  german websites yielded nothing also.

so, it looks like I have to order the whole unit 6012001773

There is also a later version without the big bearing.  I thought
someone posted that the later version will work in the earlier engines.
Anyone know if this is so?  the part number is 606273

Last time I put in a used one I had.  Now all I have is old ones with
rattly bearings.

THANKS.

Re: [MBZ] 24v to 12v converter

2019-02-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Your ideas echo my own, the only advantage in 24v really is that the panels
are much cheaper per watt. I can buy 100w 12v panels for $100 each or 305w 24v
panels for $150. With the larger panels I can get away with fewer physical
mountings, less wiring, etc.
The inverter draws .25a as measured by the charge controller just by being on,
the 9w LED in the range hood reads 1a at the charge controller when its on, a
9w LED ought to be .75a plus the .25 of the inverter...
I hadn't considered that 12v range hoods were a thing that would exist but
Amazon shows a bunch of them. Ours needs replacing anyway, of course then I
wonder if I could just get the fan...

Probably more than that.  LED's are directional, and with careful choice and
arrangement
you might be able to get by with 'less' light than before.  Also, where did you
come up with
the 1/4 A savings?  No-load draw of the inverter?  Don't forget that they're
not 100% efficient,
so while running there's more than 9W being taken from the battery, plus that
quiescent load.

I have been _very_ happy with the LED lighting I installed in the camper,
though I did not
buy the cheapest stuff out there.  From my 2017 notes:

"[at the RV store] I bought an LED replacement bulb to try out, it was
the one they recommended as working the best.  It's marked
LB1146-48-SW, 12V-24V, Tru Lite, 420 lumens 1/2 amp.  Warm
White, 5 year warranty.  Supplier: TLE.  I put it over the dinette, as
the first lamp to come on.  It looks good, and seems very similar in
color and brightness to the 1141 incandescent that's still in the other side.  I
see no reason not to get more of these.  It draws 300mA, and seems to
have constant light output down to a bit over 10V
I turned on all the LED lights and put an ammeter on the battery, and
disconnected the shore power.  4A.  Not too bad."

4A and it's lit like a show home inside.  Versus what you'd get with at most
three incandescent bulbs on.

My favorite replacement is a square panel with LED's soldered to the side
and a bulb-butt power plug.  It's in the range hood in the camper, and _all_
the light aims down at the cook surface.  The incandescent lamp there was
basically a joke, and we used it only as a nightlight.  The LED array doesn't
even remotely 'fit' where the bulb did, but neither did it need to, and it's
vastly superior.  Enough so that you can dispense with the overhead light
when cooking, if you want to.

Trying to buy LED's online was an infinitely worse experience.  There are
nearly zero specifications available, and the 1141 LED replacements I
bought for the outside camper lamps are much nastier blue-white.  A lot
cheaper, though.  Go with the warm white, if pleasant illumination is your
goal.  (Sort of like the difference between candle and Coleman light.)

I think, given your general need for what can best be described as stationary
RV behavior,
that a 12V system would be the best.  _All_ of that automotive/RV stuff runs on
12V, no
additional electronics required.  It's no problem to put 2 new 12V batteries in
parallel.

You can go 24V, of course, but you'll need to be more careful with LED choice,
and also cigarette-lighter power plugs, etc.  And/or you'll need one or more
buck
converters, and you're down to several single points of failure.

Engineering is _all_ about tradeoffs.

2019-02-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
We're going to be doing a big redesign at camp this year, the 2x 35ah
batteries will go and either we'll add another 110ah battery to the existing
one for a larger 12v array or we'll get 2x new 12v batteries to put into a 24v
array.
I checked Craigslist and I was wrong, the real deal on panels is 1yr old 305w
for $150 each. 3 of those would (I hope) make all the power we'd never need.
I also have a plan to replace our current 9w 110v CF outdoor light with 3x 3w
12v LEDs. Although the wattage is the same by not running the inverter we save
.25a. When power is short (as it is now) every amp counts...

That's what GM 6.2 and 6.5 have.  Big trucks usually have even
more.

GM wires them the easy way that causes extra load on the one
battery compared to the other.  When connecting multiple batteries
in parallel (increased current, same voltage) it's best to wire
them with the load/charge connected to both ends.

Rather than describe it with text, I have attached a

Remember, a schematic's perfect wire is a fiction. If you draw them as
resistors
(their true form) it might be easier to see how the loads remain balanced.
Basically
you want the same length of wire involved in any of the three circuit paths
from load
(etc.) to battery back to load.

I had a discount coupon I think for $75 when I bought the Kumhos for the
$500E300, the whole set was like $250, which was a decent deal.
Mounting etc was maybe another $70-80, I don't recall exactly.  The BFGs
will be cheaper at Costco than the tirerack Kumhos so seems like the way
to go.

that’s what he recommended.

BFG's at $461.96 fitted have the $70 discount now too and come in less than
$500, and have a W speed rating (168 mph maximum speed) which I will definitely
need! The Michelins at $737.96 fitted are H (Up to 130 mph). I guess that would
work too...but $276 difference doesn't seem worth it if the BFGs are decent for
touring, etc. They got a good performance test review on tirerack but a bit
noisy

https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/testDisplay.jsp?ttid=238

The Kumhos were a bit more than the BFGs too, the Coopers a bit less but the
Costco discount drops BFG per-tire price by $17.50 making them a good deal
compared to the others.

I will swing by Costco this week and see when they can get some in, looks like
they have to order them, discount is good for a coupla weeks more.

I was trying to figure out when the tires on the car now were made but can't
decipher the codes.

Got a Costco membership? They have good deals on Michelins and Bridgestones on

I was looking and wondering what the thoughts are on the less expensive tires,

got for the $500E300 seem OK, not that I have pushed them much. They do what

Thoughts appreciated.

Re: [MBZ] The Michelins on the SL are looking rough

2019-02-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I don’t recall what model of Michelin I got on the wagon, so that has a
bearing, no doubt.

I have used Kumhos on a W126 and I was very pleased with them. I went to my
tire guy and wanted to put a set of tires on the 350SDL for minimal $$ and
that’s what he recommended.

Had a sonic boom about 20min ago from the flyboys that have been roaring

foundation.  Wow.  I thought wunnum had crashed out by the garage.  They
just stopped flying, can't hear them now.  I wonder if one of the pilots

Re: [MBZ] 24v to 12v converter

2019-02-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
There are 2 batteries in the ASV I guess for more starting capacity. Its got
an intake heater which I run for 60 seconds before I try to start. I'm not sure
whats in it for oil but I'd guess its 15w40, I didn't change it this year
because it holds 3 gallons and the stuff in there only has like 30 hours on it,
ASV says to change at 200...
I'm planning to change it this summer to Rotella 5w40 synthetic, its
considerably less expensive than Mobil 1 while meeting the spec required for
the engine...

I've often thought of having 2 -12v batteries in parallel with each other and
the cars charging system so that when one eventually failed, you could keep
going on the remaining good battery by switching the cables around. I'm
guessing that the only problem might be overcharging the good battery when the
second battery became weak. Is there a 12v to 12v balancer for that
arrangement?

This is a deceptively simple question about a relatively complex topic, but I
will pose
you a question first: What makes you think the 'spare' battery is going to be
in better
shape than the main one? Age is _also_ a factor, exacerbated by temperature
cycles
and vibration, which the typical vehicle has in spades.

Instead of buying two batteries and some balancing/regulation gear, buy a
battery
tester and develop a preventative maintenance routine. Replace battery when it
starts to weaken, but before it fails you. 'Same' money, better results.

Even with the $70 discount right now they would still be almost $700
for a set of the same tire at Costco.  They have a coupla other
 Michelins that are bit less.

BFG's at $461.96 fitted have the $70 discount now too and come in less
than $500, and have a W speed rating (168 mph maximum speed) which I
will definitely need! The Michelins at $737.96 fitted are H (Up to 130
mph). I guess that would work too...but $276 difference doesn't seem
worth it if the BFGs are decent for touring, etc. They got a good
performance test review on tirerack but a bit noisy

https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/testDisplay.jsp?ttid=238

The Kumhos were a bit more than the BFGs too, the Coopers a bit less but
the Costco discount drops BFG per-tire price by $17.50 making them a
good deal compared to the others.

I will swing by Costco this week and see when they can get some in,
looks like they have to order them, discount is good for a coupla weeks
more.

Yup.

IIRC, this particular tractor has a 4-cylinder 283cid engine. Redline at
something
like 1200 RPM. I seem to recall it took both hands, pulling over and down,
kind of
like starting a propellor aircraft by hand. Heavy, hard to start, it was a
workout.
Dad always started it, he wouldn't let the boys do that one. His father taught
him
how to do it. Now, my brother owns it and I'm sure has started it, but I was
not
there for any of its later runs.

The thing to remember is that _if_ it kicks back, where are you and where are
your hands? Will you (and they) be out of the way by the time the crank comes
around backwards at velocity to try to take something off your body?

The little Farmall was much easier to start by hand, and the pull up would do
it.
Rarely needed to do it, though, as its electrical system was good in comparison.

> 3. Ensure the crank is firmly engaged into the crank bendix nut so you get

On a kick-back, the crank _doesn't_ release. That's the problem. When it
starts running, a kick _forward_, the pins release.

Re: [MBZ] Cars this morning

2019-02-18 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Hand crank rules:
1. Never wrap your thumb around the crank. Keep it on the same side as the
fingers.
2. ONLY pull UP on the crank, NEVER push DOWN while cranking. Ignition OFF
while you pull the engine to a TDC position and engage the crank so you
pull UP to "spin the engine".
3. Ensure the crank is firmly engaged into the crank bendix nut so you get
a good pull AND so the cross pins of the crank will be kicked out of
engagement if the engine kicks back.
4. Always set the spark advance in the START position, what ever that may
be for your engine. If it is ADVANCED, the engine will kick back more
likely.
5. Fuel prime. and throttle setting... Don't over prime, and only open to
low idle throttle setting..

Make sure engine is in good tune before hand cranking.

The plastic is getting brittle. How successful this repair will be is (IMHO)
determined by
how much 'splint' you put into the repair. Otherwise, it'll just break
somewhere else.

I hate plastic.

There is: it's the 24V-to-12V buck converter.

A lot of the bigger UPS's (for example) run on 24V or even 48V battery systems.

Those Milestar tires from Discount Tire I put in my 01 e320 actually seem to be
pretty decent. I think they were around $48 each for the 210

Re: [MBZ] The Michelins on the SL are looking rough

2019-02-18 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Michelins are prone to sidewalk cracking, according to my tire guy, a former
Michelin warranty adjuster.

Got a Costco membership? They have good deals on Michelins and Bridgestones on
a regular basis. I put a set of Michelins on the S210 wagon last year for under
$500 out the door, which I thought was a pretty good deal.

There's a right way and a wrong way to crank-start an engine. How can you tell
the difference?
If you're doing it wrong you get hurt when (not if) it kicks back. Anywhere
from a broken thumb
to a broken arm, or worse if you're stupid enough to get your head in the way.

It's been so long I'm not sure I've got it right anymore, but the one thing I
do remember is that
your thumb goes on the _same_ side as your fingers, kind of a mitten grab. We
had (have)
a 1948 tractor whose electric starter gave up in about 1949 or thereabouts.
Relatively uncommon
brand, parts not so easy to come by, and it's a 6V system so it always was
going to be marginal to
begin with.

[MBZ] The Michelins on the SL are looking rough

2019-02-18 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 Tread is good but the sidewalls are showing
cracks in the rubber.  Probably not good to drive in a spirited fashion,
not that I am taking it on the track or anything.  Michelins are spendy,
$186 on this site

https://www.performanceplustire.com/products/se:tire:vh:448713-1/

I was looking and wondering what the thoughts are on the less expensive
tires, all-seasons, around $100-120 each give or take. Lots of choices.
The Kumhos I got for the $500E300 seem OK, not that I have pushed them
much.  They do what tires do so far.

Thoughts appreciated.
