Re: [MBZ] My indy closed

2019-03-31 Thread Clay Monroe via Mercedes
I missed the last time he cleared the shelves. He had parts stacked and
shelved a dozen feet high in a storage section of the shop. Two stories, 24x30
of parts for Pontons to W140. Pretty much just hauled it to the dump.
Complete interiors in a host of colors, along with electronics, controls, most
anything he might have needed that had been scoured off cars over a 30 year
period. He wanted to focus more on newer cars, as well as having a more
secure place to park his collection of muscle cars.

Example of cost and labor saving in the collection. The E300D driver seat
cacked the motor. Instead of ordering the replacement, he had the exact seat
in the exact color, so it was swapped in for a few hundred bucks, labor
included.

Yes, you do wish you were there.

I think the issue was between rubber band tars and normal tars on the car. The
low profiles wanted more psi, so the door placard (or where ever it lived) was

No holes in the pins. There’s a flat washer on each end of the spring. Compress
the pins with a channellock pliers and stick a straightened out piece of wire
from a bulldog clip in between the washer and the casting. Do it on both sides
and bend a hook or “L” in the wire so you can pull it out.

Works like a charm every time.

Re: [MBZ] Tire pressure was Re: The FB idiocy is appalling

2019-03-31 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Dummy me was running the larger low profile tires from an SLK230 at the
pressures for the stock R129 tires. It was a total doofus thing and a very
expensive lesson, not to mention I’m sure it directly affected the handling.
Looking back I’m not sure how I managed such a rectal-cranial inversion, other
than I’ve never swapped out non-stock tires and wheels on a car like this
before.

When I put the new set of tires on the car I checked the pressures for the
SLK230 and found they were like 35 psi in the fronts and 39 psi in the backs.
Tires are wearing well now and handling is greatly improved according to the
driver.

Car manufacturers tend to aim to the low side to minimize NVH.
They care more how comfy you are on the test drive than how long your tires
last.
Just pump it up 3-5psi per week until you decide you liked it better last week.

Some cars, like W140, you need a lot of air just to handle the weight.

[MBZ] My indy closed

2019-03-31 Thread Clay Monroe via Mercedes
This being a Sunday I got a very strange call this morning. The phone has
bespoke ringtones for callers, and this was from my indy who is not open on the
weekends. At 0800 Alaska time. I let it ring through, maybe he leaves a
message.

A few hours later when I had gotten some coffee, he rung again. He wanted to
know if I was still going to assist in the sale of a front end damage w129. I
had been roped into trying to move it last year, but it was too far gone to put
on CL or anywhere else.

Then he tells me he closed up his shop two weeks ago. His tech had packed up
and gone to Vegas to work on Benz there. That yesterday another shop had
rolled up with a huge trailer and hauled off all manner of motors, parts and
w126 carcass. He wanted to gift me a bunch of W126 parts, as he did not see
being able to sell them on.

Very sad day.

I told him I am trapped in Alaska

[MBZ] Tar Pressure WUZ:The FB idiocy is appalling

2019-03-31 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
It is certainly true for most cars up to 1990 or so.  Particularly those
that came out with 78 profile tars from the factory.  36psi cold is
about right for most. I've never had car tars wear out in the center
from overinflation.  At factory inflation on 110/115 etc, the tar wear
underinflated quickly. Factory was 28/30 or 28/32 on most of those.

Ya gotta remember too, what a deetriot barge rode and drove like in the
68-80 era.  Think full size frod or shovey wagon...   Do you remember
wallow?   The factoies deliberately underinflated tars for that
wandering wallowing ride.

Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes wrote on 3/31/19 11:11 AM:

There is a long discussion going on the fruit forum about how you should run
your tires at 40 psi instead of what the factory said. Reason being is tires

pressure tires are under inflated and wear out the edges faster. I call BS but
now I’m not so sure if it is BS or not.

Re: [MBZ] Clay!!!

2019-03-31 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Dan sez:  "I’m quite familiar with the heater valves on the
W110/111/112" If so, then you know there are 4 ways the operator can be
put on the barrel.

the valve cylinders have a square end for the operating tab.  Note the
positions of the operator.  Down for off, out for heat.  When you pull
the barrels for lube and new orings, note the position of the hole and
the slots in the barrel.  You can put the tabs one way for low heat, but
it wont fully open the hole at full "on."  The other way (90º) you get
full on in "on" but not full off.

But if you know where it is now, you can change the seasonal setting
without draiining the heater core.  I assume you already pulled the
barrels, cleaned, lubed and installed new orings already.   So on the
driver side, for example, IF you now can't shut OFF the heat for FL.
turn the heater lever to full off; Pull the operator tab off the barrel;
turn the heater lever to full on  reattach tab.   Now, when you turn the
heat off, it is really off, but you still have sufficient heat for FL
and defrost.

for Winter operation (outside the deep south), you would want to do the
opposite.

Depends on the tire. For low profile tires (18" rims, for instance), use
40-45. Better wear, better handling, and greatly reduced road damage.

I set mine pretty much by the wear profile -- if the inner section is wearing
faster than the edges, it' too hard, if the outer is wearing faster, it's under
inflated.Adjust as required.

Usually the factory recommendation for the listed tire sizes are correct, but
when you don't have the original size installed, you have to figure it out.

I raised the pressure in the Golf (18" rims) to 45 front 40 rear and fixed a
large number of issues, including excess tire wear. Far less road damage too,
but that is partially because the State finally fixed most of the highway to

Yeah there was one of those yesterday. There’s always “what oil should I use,
what’s on the sticker or something else?” Then you say, “how about the Mobil1
like the sticker says” then you get a whole bunch of experts saying it’s no
good. Stupid question to begin with and even stupider answers.

I guess they’re smarter than a bunch of automotive and chemical engineers with
billion dollar (euro) research budgets. But what do I know.

Pretty soon they will probably be bored with the 123 and either flood the
market selling them or take them to the crusher. Sort of like how the wvo craze

For Alex supposedly having his own shop, he seems like he does not know
all that much for supposedly being a professional.  I am sure he is a
nice guy but it just seems to me like his a DIY learning about these

a 123 line from him for this 240D I have sitting in the shop.  For $15 I
figured it was easier than me going out to the back 40 and pulling on off.

Yeah that’s pretty much it, though often cringeworthy

There’s a group for 124 and for 210, mostly guys post pics of their cars. The
123 group has a lot of issues though, with mostly wrong advice given.

Re: [MBZ] Clay!!!

2019-03-31 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Curley,

Please elaborate. I’m quite familiar with the heater valves on the
W110/111/112, I wasn’t aware of such a setting.

Thanks!

maybe the heater valves were not set right.  On the 110/111/112 the
heater valves have 2 settings.  One is warm climates.  it is good to
about 30º.   the other is for frigid zones.  It will cook you out when
it is 20 below on full heat.  But when it is in the off position, there
is still some heat. (Not fun when it is 90+ without air conditioning.)
But you can switch over spring and fall.  run the warm climate setting
in summer and run the frigid zone  setting in the winter.  Maybe the 115
has similar settings?
