Re: [MBZ] How the heck do you remove quick connect fuel fittings

2019-05-05 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
It is a clever device designed to so discourage the DIY home repair that
you will take it to the dealer, who then charges you 5 hrs of shop labor at
flat rate of $228 per hr, plus other fees, to do the job. And, your
frustration level will be so high, at that point, you will be glad and
grateful to pay the outrageous dealer shop rates.

Re: [MBZ] OT: cleaning Mac keyboard

2019-05-05 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
When I worked at the Center for Non-Destructive Evaluation, from time to
time I needed to go to a shared computer lab to have access to the SGI
machines.   There were quite a few grad students from the asian
subcontinent, and fewer from Asia.   Some of them never washed their
hands, and maybe never bathed.   The keyboards in those computer labs
were black with buildup of vegetable fats, dirt, skin oil and skin
flakes, dust and whatever, to the point that the keys were black and
unreadable.   The first time I had to use one of them I didn't really
want to touch the keyboard.

My first job was a pencil draftsman, and in that job I learned to wash
my hands before touching pencil or paper.   I have carried that over to
keyboards.  I have on occasion cleaned off a little buildup at the sides
of the keys, but I never really had to clean keyboards.

I like flushing with dollar store rubbing alcohol. Give it a canned air chaser
for crumb removal and flush again. It dries out overnight. Gives me time to
swab off the schmutz on the keys

Well it turned out I was trying to use the 1/2” on the 3/8 line even though it
seemed to fit. Put the right one on and some wd40 and it came off. Now on to
the 1/2 line. Using the 1/2 side I can’t get it to release the internal clips.
I bought the HF set which looks the same or similar to the Lisle set. I guess
I’m giving up and will see if a flaps has the lisle set

_Every_ Mac we're using, except Dad's that I inherited, is an older one that
would
be _useless_ today except that the RAM and disk have been significantly upgraded
from the as-sold configuration. They're all 11-20 years old.

In fairness, CPU, RAM and disk needs have leveled off somewhat. I expect that
Dad's Macbook Pro will provide long and useful service, although probably not
20 years' worth. Had I not inherited it, I would probably have had to go buy
one
for my new job. It is truly a nice machine. But, it had better be for the
price!

We're using four of the cheese graters (one a G5 quad for some old games), a G4,
and four Macbook Pros. There's a 10yo Mini in reserve should the newest laptop
have issues. It's capable of running the same software that I need. I'm not
sure if
it was ever upgraded or not, I only got it recently, and have powered it on
twice.

I plan to replace the G4 with a 2014 Mini, if I can find one at a good price.
Quieter,
and lower power. The G4 is no longer hosting the RAID array for backups, which
have been moved to a cheese grater, and is only doing web service now that its
mail relay duties (for my retired G3) are not needed. The Mini is the only
non-laptop
that Apple ever made that is lower-power than the G4, and the 2014 Mini is the
lowest-power one of the bunch. That's a 24x7 expense, our only one, which is
why I'm holding out for the 'best' choice there.

I figgered some of you would "get it."

I've called the wussy ones that since they came out.  A land rover is an
ugly, rectangular, utilitarian, topless or ragtop jeep like vehicle. The
glitzy shiny enclosed vehicles driven by female real estate agents are
NOT land rovers, so I've called them Lan Drovers for decades.

Re: [MBZ] Tesla & Mercedes

2019-05-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Both Deere and Apple are lobbying the states currently attempting to pass “DIY"
laws. Deere is especially adept at doing this, I think they torpedoed a bill in
Nebraska last year for this. The claim is that “people will die!!!” should they
have access to the service literature and tools.

I think MA has a bill currently in their legislature for this as does one other
state.

Dad's 'new' Deere tractor is a turbodiesel, with a 'smooth' engine design that
has all the fuel passages inside the block somehow. When it failed, it leaked
fuel
_inside_ the crankcase, where it could not be seen but certainly could do harm.
Filled the crankcase with fuel.

The loaner tractor was simpler, and stronger. And bigger. Dad regretted buying
the one he did. My suspicion is that it's all getting worse. Deere is also
one of
the ones claiming that you have no right to fix your own gear.
