I presume you mean

And, no, I don't see anything glaringly wrong. I see some little grey
oddities on the two vertical pipes on the A/C condenser, some odd stuff
on the body behind the right headlight, and, I presume, the sound
encapsulation on the garage floor. Of course, not being there is a

Drain?  Don't need no Stnking drain!     Be a man!   Pull off the
lower hose at the radiator.    Drain is OK on the 111, but on 123+ where
it is a little plastic thing, Pull the hose!

Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote on 5/21/19 9:32 PM:

Don’t know what it is about this vehicle… it seems to want to test me every
time I touch it, and while everything seems to end well for the most part, it’s
really frustrating.

Got my Cardone caliper this afternoon, so I figured I would cool off the garage
and put it on along with the new coolant reservoir.

Go to drain the cooling system and can’t find the darned drain on the radiator.
Weird. Get on the computer to find that there is a plastic petcock on the front
left side of the radiator. OK, I can do that.

Not.

I find the petcock, but I can’t turn it. It’s a plastic tab that you turn to
unscrew the valve out to open it, and it’s in a really tight space in the front
behind the bumper. I finally get a crescent wrench on it and carefully turn,
fully expecting it to snap off. It doesn’t. Relief! But there’s barely a
trickle of coolant coming out of the drain. I turn some more, and more coolant
comes out, but it’s hardly anything of significance. And yes, I had taken the
cap off of the reservoir prior to opening the drain.

I turn it a few more times alternating between a monkey wrench and a crescent
wrench to turn it. Coolant is coming out now, but not a big gush. Hmm.

So I work on replacing the coolant reservoir. Not bad, a few hoses were
reluctant to come off, but I got them off without damage eventually. Installed
the new reservoir, not a big deal.

I move to the right rear to do the caliper. I break the hose fitting first, and
it comes loose without issue (thank you, Kroil!!!) Get the caliper bolts out no
problem. Disconnect the wear indicator connector. Remove the caliper and
unscrew it from the hose. Screw the hose into the new caliper and mount the
caliper back on the backing plate. Tighten hose. It’s got a bit of tension on
it, so I soaked the hard line fitting where it meets the hose in anticipation
for breaking this union and rotating the hose to relieve some of the tension on
it.

Nope, not going to tempt Fate tonight.

Get the rear caliper all tightened down and hook up my power bleeder. I really
wanted to bleed the whole brake system, as the fluid looked terrible, but I had
barely half a liter on the shelf so I didn’t want to run out. Something for the
next parts run. Bled out the caliper and put everything back in place. Back to
the cooling system.

So now it’s time to close the valve on the radiator and fill the system up with
some water for now. I’ll run it with straight water in it for a few miles, then
drain and flush it before filling with MB coolant.

So I start turning the valve with my two wrenches, alternating them to get on
the valve tab. I turn a lot. I turn more. I’m thinking that there is no way I
unscrewed this valve that far. So I get into the area around the valve with a
light and a mirror, and notice the valve is sticking out of the radiator quite
a ways. It appeared that I was turning the valve but it was not engaging
whatever means it used to move back into the radiator housing. Perhaps I
unscrewed it too far?

So I go at it again with my wrenches, applying pressure on the valve as I turn.
After a few turns it appears to be moving into the housing. I finally get it to
a point where it seems tight, and put some water in the coolant reservoir. Then
I hear dripping….

Apparently the valve isn’t sealing or all the way closed. But I tightened it
down as far as I dared since it was a plastic valve. I get on it with my
crescent wrench and turn it again as hard as I dare without braking it. The
dripping stops. I had moved it maybe 10-15 degrees, if that. But it seemed to
be sealed.

Whew!

[MBZ] Today's ML500 Abuse

2019-05-21 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes

But it seemed to
be sealed.

Whew!

Refilled the cooling system with water and closed it up. Moved the vehicle back
into the driveway and called it a night.

I've had a few cut-outs that turned into nightmares

I greatly prefer catching swarms like my brother and I did this year -- leave

Strohs was the favorite of the guys from Da Region. They consumed huge
quantities. It was a constant source of argument.

Coots was quite exotic. I remember some guys renting a uhaul over thanksgiving,
drove straight through from Indiana to Colorado and skied a coupla days then
loaded up the trailer with coors which they then sold for some exorbitant price
to the marks around campus. They paid for their trip and made a bit of profit.

Re: [MBZ] OT Bees

2019-05-21 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
If you’re moving bees you use what’s called a “package”, which is nothing more
than a box with open sides and screen over the openings. You put a feeding can
in the box with sugar syrup so the bees have something to eat while in
transport. A queen and some of the workers are put in a little wooden box with
one side open that’s screened so the hive can see and smell her but not get to
her.

These are usually the means by which you get bees to a new hive. The queen is
kept separate because the bees in the package are not typically related to her.

A “nuc” is a beehive with several frames in it that are already established and
have a laying queen that’s related to the bees in the hive. The advantage to
using a nuc is that it’s effectively an established hive. Once things are going
well in the nuc you can move the frames and queen to a full sized hive.

Remember, bees build a colony, so relationship with the queen is important. If
the queen is unrelated it can take a while (a couple of weeks, usually) for the
bees to associate with her and for her to start laying eggs.

I kept bees in Indiana on a small scale on the property of one of my business
partners. It was a lot of fun and pretty cool.

In my new nokian, I think one of the regular plugs would have been fine,
but they spooked me by saying it could not be fixed.   So I ordered the

1/4 of the way in from the shoulder, so a plug would have worked just fine.

I carry one of those gooey cord plug sets in
the car all the time. it has helped more than
once or twice over the years. No problems,
just does the job and lasts till the tire

Use great care around bees. Almost all bee colony's are now invaded with
Africanized bees, well known as "killer bees". They are VERY aggressive
when messed with, and quite aggressive when not messed with.

>From personal experience I can tell you their stings are WAY more toxic
than "regular bees". I had a colony set up shop at the Ranch that was so
aggressive they pursued me for over a mile across the ranch before I got
away from them. Called in some pro bee guys and even with the big bee suits
THEY got stung a bunch.

They've limited to the two basic styles of beer. Every beer you've ever had is
fundamentally a lager or ale, those two are the basic styles of brewing. To
oversimplify a lager is cold brewed (lagered) while an ale is warm brewed. My
preferred porters and stouts are ales, pilsners are an example of lagers...

The little country church my mom went to, when she was young, had honey
bees in the roof/eaves between the rafters.    When it got hot in the
summer, a new pastor came to the church, and it got so hot the honey ran
down into the sanctuary.

So the new preach gets up, introduces himself, notes the running honey,

[MBZ] BAD BEER WUZ: Plugging Tires

2019-05-21 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Old Mil  and Meister were about 10 steps UP from Cold Springs.   Can't
comment on Fox.  Was Fox the bottom of the barrel at LaCrosse?   Or was
it made somewhere else.

[MBZ] Worst beer WUZ:Plugging Tires

2019-05-21 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Worst beer I ever had was some rotgut called Cold Spring, made in Cold
Spring Minnesota.

Burgomeister used to have a bad reputation.   Made in Warsaw, Il.   A
friend of mine's dad worked there a while.   He reported rats in the vats.

I guess I'm not politically incorrect enough not to have appreciated that. Too
bad I have only been blessed with grandsons (4) or I would certainly buy one of
those for my granddaughter!

BTW, I have a niece who races and is an automotive parts professional. She used
to do ice racing up in AK.

I've seen pics of old Monkey Grip kits that included a hot clamp. IIRC, you put
fuel in the clamp and lit it.
I can remember my dad helping me patch my bike tire, and he lit the glue. It
didn't seem to help, maybe he left it burning too long.
