Re: [MBZ] w124 rear springs

2019-10-27 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Yeah, they came out fine. Getting them back in without a compressor is the
question. One is supposed to torque all the bolts with the axles
horizontal; this means all the bushings are holding the control arms up
when the subframe is bolted back in. If you put the springs in before
jacking the subframe up, you are now fighting the bushing torque as the
springs push down on it all. Getting the bolts started is hard
enough without that. So I bolted the frame in, but now there is no way to
get the springs back in without a compressor.

Is it possible to get these back in without the compressor? I torqued
everything with the subframe on the bench and there is no way I am doing
that again, the control arm wont go down all the way even with my 100lb kid
standing on the hub. I guess I am looking for a compressor tomorrow.

Re: [MBZ] All electric cars

2019-10-27 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
There are such arrangements for businesses, often larger ones who might have a
facility they want to be sure is powered up. The arrangement is such that they
sign an annual contract for the availability of a generator of a specific size
and the delivery of such within a prescribed time frame, typically 24 hours.
When a hurricane or other potential incident approaches, they call up, say they
want their generator, and it’s delivered and set up within the agreed upon time
frame. They are typically responsible for things like fuel and daily
maintenance (checking fluids, etc.) by one of their personnel who has been
suitably trained. Some pay for a 100% turnkey arrangement.

They are billed based on usage (hours) and days on site. There is usually a
tiered rate schedule that’s identified in the contract, just as you might
expect for any piece of rental equipment.

It’s a pretty damned lucrative setup for the generator business, as you get
paid whether or not the contract is exercised. However, it also requires that
you have the resources available to meet the needs of that and any other
customers who have similar arrangements. Coordination with the manufacturer
usually allows you to draw upon equipment they have staged at a depot in the
area, which can help.

Funny story - some years ago, after Andrew had devastated South Florida,
everyone was on pins and needles whenever a hurricane was on the horizon. We
had a client, a national fast food chain, call up one of those times (they were
not under contract) and demand to have a very large generator set (1000kW,
think DDC 12V-149) set up at their data center as a redundant backup for their
existing systems.

We got a purchase order and signed contract and upon receiving it initiated the
process to get the unit set up and installed at their site. As you can imagine,
this is not a small undertaking.

Four days later when the hurricane did not appear they said we could come and
pick everything up, which we did. When they were presented with the bill, they
refused to pay. “We never used it, so why should we pay for anything?”

Yeah.

A year later and a couple of corporate attorney meetings and they paid the
bill. With interest. And they were blackballed in our business, making it near
impossible for them to get similar services from anyone in the industry without
paying up front. I heard that they ended up buying their own equipment because
they couldn’t get anyone in the South Florida generator business to take their
calls.

Probably the economics don't support the business case. I wonder if there would
be a market for selling gas stations a subscription for emergency generator

had to be touched up after a minor accident.) Dependably runs, but
currently needs a new CV boot, glow plug, and odds and ends - repairs
estimated at $1500. Radio, AC, moon roof, cruise control, automatic

[MBZ] $600E320 fuel mileage

2019-10-27 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Filled up the E320 yesterday for the second time, calculated 25.8mpg
which I think is pretty decent.  Some in-town driving, some rural, and
mix of the two.  I'm guessing on a road trip it might be more like 30?

Premium was $2.63 if I recall, so that is about ten cents a mile for
fuel for now.  The $500E300 was getting about that same mileage, more
like 28mpg, on diesel which is about the same price, so I guess fuel
cost-wise it is about a wash.

New construction gas stations around here are installing standby power systems
as a part of the build. Makes sense, as when the power goes out, not only can
you not sell gas, you can’t sell beer, Big Gulps, etc., etc.

Once I get settled in at the new ranch and get the old ranch sold off, I’ll
start looking for a whole house system for the new place, either propane or
diesel.

Re: [MBZ] KW heater valve

2019-10-27 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Why not just make it a complete manual system with 3 ball valves [brass
with stainless balls and barb fittings to accept the hoses]?

Place ball valve at the entry hose, at the heater entry. One ball valve at
the return line, at the heater exit. and a "T" fitting in each hose before
the two valves. Place a third ball valve between the "T" fittings.

Summer setting; Entry hot water valve closed, Exit hot water valve closed,
"T" fitting ball valve Open With these settings... heater is out of the
circuit and water pump still circulates coolant through the heater hoses..

Winter setting: Close the "T" fitting "bypass valve" and Open exit and
entry valves, to route hot coolant to the heater core in cab.

Done and dusted... you will need to open the hood twice a year to set it
for the coming season... Done and Dusted... and cheap and durable...

During a widespread power failure that lasted 5 days at my house, a friend
drove 30-40 miles (in the wrong direction as it turned out) to find a working
gas station. Fortunately the power failure lasted less than a day where I buy
gas.

RUn em dry.   Best is to drain the tank, then run it dry.  my 15 yr old
schneeblower is like new.  I never drained the tank, except one year
when it ran out of gas when I was done.   I just shut off the gas and
ran it dry.  My 40 yr old stihl, I dump out the gas and ran it dry.
(All E10)   Never had a problem with it until the lektronic ign crapped
out.   Wishing it had points and condensor.  Ihave had it fixed long
ago.  Stihl dealer laughed at it and told me to buy a new one.  I won't
be going back there...

If the initial argument is that this was a failing of electric cars, and in
that regard I'd say you're wrong, widespread power outages are going to affect
gas powered cars too...

I would use RTV to seal it, and safety wire or something similar
to hold it in place. The wire can form an "X" over the top of the

If she had an all electric car and lived in an apartment, where would she get
