Really cold, arctic/sub-zero here is pretty rare. The other night was
maybe mid-20s, and a fairly heavy/wet snow. Though I've also had trouble
on this hill with dry powder snow. Would prefer to avoid studs, as they
are pretty noisy on dry roads (which is most of the winter, here).

Hit up Car-part.com and see what used wheels cost. Try to downsize, the tires
will be cheaper and they'll work better in snow. For example, if your Cruze
takes 205-55R16, get 195-65R15s. If your W210 takes 215-55R16 and you can find
a set of 15s from a W124 that fit, get 195-70 or 205-65 depending on the weight
rating you need.

tires to mount for the Arctic. There is a fellow on the TUBE of Ewe who drives
around the Nokian winter track testing tires in his VW. Seems there are two
forms of winter tire Hakipolita X3 or such. He tested normal all seasons,
Central European compound winters and the “Oh God! Save me Arctic blend” winter
tire. And the spiked kind. Maybe there are tires meant to work at -40c and
below, where the other type were just meant for -15c climate.

BTW, the super arctic with spikes did the best runs and stops. Without studs,
the tires were pretty darn good, losing maybe a few meters stopping distance

Re: [MBZ] OT: Winter tires

2019-12-18 Thread Clay Monroe via Mercedes
Winter tires do make a difference. Depends on how much ice and snow you are
dealing with if they are a reasonable investment. The compound is much more
pliable in very low temps. There is added traction and reduced stopping
distance in braking. I am not sure about crawling up a hill. SWMBA swapped
tires on her cars each fall and spring. The jeep had studs, and the new to her
‘yota highlander will be getting spikes as well. For the days there is mega
ice on the road, not just some snotty snow.

For my cash, putting winter tires on winter wheels does allow a person to do
the semi-annual swap themselves, over paying the tire show to mount and
dismount.

How much difference do winter tires really make?

I have an unavoidable hill getting into my neighborhood. When it's
snowy, I can't climb it in the 300D or 300SD with "all-season"
tires. Rear tires just spin.

The other night it had snowed. The road was not yet plowed or sanded. I
was in the Volvo XC90. Heavy car, front-wheel drive, new-ish all season
tires. It also could not climb the hill. Other neighbors with AWD/SUVs
were climbing the hill no problem and they didn't appear to have snow
tires. Our AWD Honda Element with cheap Cooper tires had no problem.

Had to get the Frontier (4WD) and tow chain to pull the Volvo up the hill.

I'm OK with not using the MBs in the snow. But I need to drive
something. Priced winter tires for the Volvo and looks like they are
~$180 or so per tire. Don't want to spend that money if it's not going
to make a substantial difference.

2019-12-18 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
I would think you will find that they do make quite a difference. They
should improve traction on acceleration and on braking. The rubber is a
softer compound and they have extra siping. You may want to do some
research as some are better than others. If you are allowed to run
studded tires there, that would prove even better for the trouble that
you are experiencing.  Think of them as extra insurance too. If they
keep you out of an accident, they will have paid for themselves. Plus,
if you keep the vehicle long enough they will pay off as well since you
will be using them part of the year instead of your summer tires so the
summer tires will last longer. Get wheels too so that you are not
swapping tires on and off rims twice each year.

Fascinating stuff. Maybe I'll wear green tinted glasses back and forth on

Maybe this is why Kaleb is always looking for green cars?

Jeepers! Who knew? We thought those were bears.

On 18/12/2019 11:13 AM, Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes wrote:

Wild pigs occupy the “largest global range of any nondomesticated
terrestrial mammal on earth,” researchers in Canada recently concluded
. They have roamed
parts of North America for centuries.

But in recent decades, the pigs have been expanding their range — or more
accurately, people have been expanding it for them.

“It’s not natural dispersion,” Dr. Nolte said. “We have every reason to
believe they are being moved in the backs of pickup trucks and released to
create hunting opportunities.”

In the United States, their stronghold is the South — about half of the
nation’s six million feral pigs live in Texas. But in the past 30 years,
the hogs have expanded their range to 38 states from 17.

Eurasian boar first arrived in Canada in the 1980s and 1990s, imported as
livestock or for hunting. They escaped or were released, and sometimes
mated with domestic pigs. Their descendants have become common across the
Canadian prairie.

Many experts thought the pigs couldn’t thrive in cold climates. But they
burrow into the snow in winter, creating so-called pigloos — a tunnel or
cave with a foot or two of snow on top for insulation. Many have developed
thick coats of fur.

Now they are poised to invade states along the border, threatening to
establish a new beachhead in this country.

“It’s concerning that Canada isn’t doing anything about it,” said Maggie
Nutter, one of 80 concerned ranchers and farmers who met recently near
Sweet Grass, Mont., to discuss the potential swine invasion. “What do you
do to get them to control their wild hog population?”

States and federal agencies are monitoring the border. Should the pigs
advance, wildlife officials plan an air assault, hunting the pigs from
planes with high-tech equipment like night-vision goggles and
thermal-imaging scopes. They’re testing waterways for pig DNA, and turning
to more traditional approaches — hunting dogs and shotguns.

Asians in general, both Chinese and Japanese. Heck, remember their former
President, Fujimori? I got to attend this black tie reception thing with him
when I was there on business years ago. My buddy at work that covered South
America was Peruaño and donated or helped get medical equipment shipped into
the country from the Peruvian community in Milwaukee.

We used to travel down there together, and on one of our trips he told me to
pack formal wear but didn’t tell me why. There was this big reception with
Fujimori and a bunch of business leaders that we went to, and he got some sort
of award for the work he did for this medical group that received the donations
he coordinated.

It was pretty cool. I had to fill out a card with the phonetic pronunciation of
my name for the receiving line and I got my picture taken with him. I should
dig that out...

[MBZ] OT for Fusion nerds

2019-12-18 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Bezos-backed fusion startup raises $100M for nuclear demoPublished:
Tuesday, December 17, 2019

A nuclear fusion startup backed by billionaire Jeff Bezos raised more than
$100 million to help design and build a demonstration power plant.

The company lined up $65 million in Series E financing led by Singapore's
Temasek Holdings Pte, and is getting another $38 million from Canada's
Strategic Innovation Fund, General Fusion Inc. said in a statement
yesterday. It's now attracted more than $200 million in financing.

Canada-based General Fusion is one of about two dozen companies seeking to
commercialize nuclear fusion technology. It relies on the same process that
powers stars, generating huge amounts of energy by fusing small atoms into
larger ones. While it holds out the promise of cheap, carbon-free energy,
researchers have been working for decades to overcome significant technical
hurdles.

"The world is pivoting toward fusion as the necessary complement to other
technologies which, collectively, will enable the carbon-free energy future
we all need," Chief Executive Officer Christofer Mowry said in the
statement.

Firms pursuing such designs are hoping they can start generating power
sooner than the 35-nation, $25 billion Tokamak fusion reactor known as
ITER. Collaborators on that facility — the largest research project in
history — have been laboring on a gigantic demonstration reactor in France
since 2010.

Conventional nuclear power plants use a different technology, fission,
which generates energy as a large, unstable nucleus is split into smaller
elements. Unlike fusion systems, they also produce deadly, radioactive
waste.

The financing round was led by Temasek and joined by existing investors
including Bezos Expeditions and Chrysalix Venture Capital. *— Will Wade and

Perhaps those bankers wearing the green eye-shades were on to something?

https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2019/12/15/787138928/researchers-explore-a-drug-free-idea-to-relieve-chronic-pain-green-light?utm_source=pocket-newtab

Fascinating stuff. Maybe I'll wear green tinted glasses back and forth on
my commute and whenever I'm outside.

Maybe this is why Kaleb is always looking for green cars?

So in other words, sketchy sorts would breed feral hogs, then shoot them
and claim the bounty, which would presumably exceed the costs of rearing
them to adulthood...

I can probably do that, after I use it and have valuable feedback. DIY
tool-making would be fun, but for this one would need a lathe and a saw and
a drill press, maybe a plasma cutter, and then some stock.

The Harbor Freight "Icon" torque wrenches have tested well vs. Snap-on.

They are also substantially more expensive than their "Pittsburgh" wrenches.

I don't see any at HF that are in the in. lbs. range though, in any brand.

Re: [MBZ] TV's

2019-12-18 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I think I saw some 4k content on Netflix, I presume they are using some
heavy compression algorithms (like regular HD content) to get it down to
something that most ISPs deliver.  I think I nominally have 15 or 18Mbps
on my ATT Uverse link, it's been awhile since I looked at whatever they
are sending and the bandwidth it uses.  I vaguely recall the Netflix
content was like 8Mbps for an HD stream.  Whatever it is, it looks
pretty good, and I have noticed that some of the newer content looks
really good.

The streams do slow down sometimes and get snowy or quite pixelated, it
might be the Firestick gets confused or ATT is choking the stream.
Usually if I quit the show and start it again it is fine.  I notice my
older AppleTV seems to choke much more often now and will do what
appears to be a soft reboot, and if it keeps acting up I have to unplug
it and do a hard reboot then it works better for a coupla weeks until it
starts choking again.

If you go to 4K which is nearly 2x the resolution of 1080 and don't

Uncompressed 4K is something like 1500MB/s, thats one and a half
gigabytes every second, the storage requirements boggle the mind. We
sell storage systems that support over 7 petabytes mostly to support 4K.

As an aside the Japanese national broadcaster, NHK, is going to
produce the next Olympic games in uncompressed 8K. So far just the

[MBZ] Feral pigs and pigloos in Canada, eh (NY Times excerpt)

2019-12-18 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes

It's an LCD display that is backlit with LED's. Nothing special, in other
words,
unless you admire marketing's ability to make something out of nothing.

With the demise of CRT and plasma, the only consumer display technologies out
there are:

LCD (filtering bulk light provided by other means)
DLP (reflecting bulk light provided by other means)
OLED(generating light independently per-pixel)

Anything else is just marketing's spin on one of the above.

2019-12-18 Thread dan--- via Mercedes
Don’t buy a HF inch pound torque wrench. I don’t like the way they click (or
don’t). The click doesn’t seem to be very positive.

When I did the injector reseal on the W211 I needed a 1/4” drive torque wrench
that would do 7 inch-pounds. I got this one and was very pleased with it:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M12284X/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8=1

Not quite a HF price, but the quality seems very good as was the accuracy
checked against a beam type wrench that has been calibrated.

Re: [MBZ] TV's

2019-12-18 Thread dan--- via Mercedes
I came rally close to going OLED when I bought a new TV earlier this year. I
realize they punch everything up in the stores, but across the board they were
definitely better as far as picture quality.

I’ve got a 55” plasma that we took out of service because it was ghosting
slightly in one part of the display. I may put it on the wall in the garage for
some really decadent garage entertainment.

Hmm, I might get one of the smaller ones. I've never had anything that could
deal with inch pounds. I've got 3/8" and 1/2" beam and a 1/2" clicker that all
work well. I think the beam ones are both Craftsman, the clicker I got at a

Re: [MBZ] OT - Who Has Direct HVAC Experience?

2019-12-18 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Dan,
One last simple test. You should have a simple toggle light switch somewhere
near the furnace/ac. Turn it off. Turn the thermostat off and set the temp to
as low as it will go. Let this set for a few minutes. Turn the switch on at
the furnace/ac. Reset the thermostat to on and gradually bring the temp back
to where you want it. I have a 20 yr. old Armstrong and I've had to do this
the 2-3 times I've had to replace the thermostat. Seems taking all the power
off both the furnace system computer board and the thermostat forces a sort of
reset of the system and puts everything back in sync. It's a cheap test. If
this doesn't work, I'd suggest a hard start switch on the compressor as they
get weak over the years and need more electricity to start.
Good luck and best wishes.

I doubt either of Don's planes are rated for the stress of pulling out
of a steep dive close enough the sireen would scare the field rats.

Even P-51s shed their wings when the pilot attempted to pull out of a
steep dive.

Then there are the questions of availability and cost.

Maybe some form of low pressure air horn could be devised.  To use
airflow into the horn during flight, with an on -off valve of some
form.   Sort of a hvlp horn, rather than the normal hplv horn.

Next most common issue is the start capacitor. After that, a slow leak
would let the refrigerant level drop below the compressor cut-off limit,
and then no cooling. I've not had a set of contactors go bad, but that is
a possibility.
