Yeah,

not quite in Anchorage. Place is surrounded by large mounds of ice covered
earth. These things block the shine of the lights coming and going until the
sun rises high enough in the sky. Twilight remains, as the sun comes up
behind the mountains and peeks out past much past 1030 and is sucked back down
on the other side of Cook Inlet. Blue dark hangs around a long time on both
ends as the sun clears horizon, and black dark sets in right quick. Spooky as
heck. Like living in a deep pit with steep walls around it.

There was a discussion of the floating Russian reactor ship on my other
email list:

The US Navy already has nuclear powered ships that can produce
many times the electrical power that the new Russian ship does.

Gerald R. Ford class aircraft carriers use the new A1B reactors
from Bechtel which reportedly produce enough steam to generate
125 megawatts (168,000 hp) of electricity, plus 350,000 shaft
horsepower (260 MW) to power the four propeller shafts. Each
aircraft carrier has two of these, and they will run for twenty
years before needing to be refueled.

Today I saw sunrise 8:08, set 5:13, duration 9:05.

Official daylight - with the sun above the horizon? Or the sky
isn't dark? Sunrise and sunset get really long as you get closer
to the poles. For PV electric generation, true sunrise and sunset
may be valid. But for "it's dark outside", civil or nautical
twilight is probably more viable.

In Lansing, the length of daylight is just over an hour more when
including civil twilight and a bit over 2 hours if it includes
nautical twilight.

Twilight is when the sky is not dark, but the sun is not above the
horizon. 10:14 to 15:30 does not include twilight.

Civil twilight adds 2 hours to the 5:30 of daylight in Anchorage.

Nautical twilight adds another 2 hours.

So 5.5 hours of direct sun (if the horizons are visible) and 9.5
hours of it being bright enough to see what you are about to bump

I had to move ours to 10.13 also.  I was not happy about it, but so far
no different than 10.11, only some websites quit whining about safari

is apfel who forces you to update and arbitrarily tells you your

essentially the same processors; while microshaft arbitrarily quits
supporting an OS, but does not prevent you from running it on a

Major juice draw with ign off is alternator, in my experience.   No easy
fix, change alternator.

Larry Turner via Mercedes
December 27, 2019 at 6:55 AM
yeah, there are 3 fuse boxes I know of - trunk, engine compart, near
drivers seat.  There are also a number of what I think are relays near
the battery/spare tire in the trunk.  I have a MB workshop manual and
as usual,  it takes a while to learn how to navigate it. I'm still
learning.

re Aux Battery - yep, replaced it with no change.  The dash display
shows a battery symbol  and something saying it needs to be serviced.
I need to buy a proper battery for the trunk and retest everything.
At one point I had a fully charged battery and all the comfort extras
seemed to wake up and the tranny and everything else worked as they
should - things like cruise control, and some other things I don't
recall at the moment.  I haven't been able to spend time chasing
problems properly recently but hope to get a correct primary battery
and check things more completely.

It's a beautiful car and the engine runs great even with the CEL on.
Had that checked and there is a common problem with the balance shaft.
Spoke with two techs at MB and both said the same thing - spending
$3-$5K on a engine rebuild (MB prices).  They have had customers who
did have the engine repaired, reinstalled and couldn't tell a
difference in the way the engine behaved.  It seems the only thing
different was the CEL was off.  SO I'm not worried about the engine.
The AT is different.  It has 2 driving modes: Sport and Comfort which
are accessed using a button on the console.  Much of the time
recently, it was impossible to change modes.  Also, to put it in Park,
you must turn the ign off to remove the key.

Cudo's to MB for extending the warranty +20 or 25 years (!) for the
fuel system.  When we had fuel smell they replaced everything around
the fuel tank - pumps, filters, etc.

Let's see, what else?  When the AT goes bonkers, it will not shift out
of 2nd making the engine run much higher than normal rpm's.  Not a
major flaw IMO but my wife is uncomfortable with such things ;-) Since
she's the primary driver I need to cater to her needs. Anyway, Battery
1st, then we'll see.  But I fear the Alternator may be the reason for
the short causing the battery to drain quickly. But I need to jack the
car up so I can crawl under and disconnect a wire then test for the
power drain before I'll know.

Thx for the comments  --

You may (like me) dislike the Win 10 start menu.  If that's the case, try

Re: [MBZ] OT - Win10 Va Win 7

2019-12-27 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
In my experience, a SSD is the easiest way to speed up a PC,

I had 3 PCs (2 notebooks and a desktop) still running Win 7. The desktop and
one (newer) notebook upgraded to Win 10 just fine. The older notebook was
incompatible in some way and defaulted back to Win 7 (and still runs fine in
7).

I'd recommend trying the free Win 10 upgrade. Worst case it goes back to Win
7. Without security fixes, orphan Win 7 systems may (or may not) become a
serious security problem in the future. Why take the chance?

You may (like me) dislike the Win 10 start menu. If that's the case, try
"Classic Shell" which provides a (customizable) Win 7-like start menu.

There is much discussion of how to power the tiny villages and such up
there. Very few places are close enough to make sense putting out much
power, as the cost to run wires is huge compared to how much demand
for wattage there is. I think Kodiak has almost enough demand
(powering three other population centers) to make 25 megawatt. That is
rather large. Nome has a demand around 8MW and powers a few villages
down about 10 miles of wire in a few directions.

The Alaskan villagers really need to either step back from western
luxury, or invest heavily in CO2 producing generation. Trouble is,
fuel flies in or comes on a barge. Very expensive to live in the lap
of western tech goodness in such a desolate place. Much more
reasonable to be on a sheep station in the outback. At least you have

What's a sub or ship reactor put out?  A few megawatts?   Ah, here the

While land-based *reactors* in *nuclear power plants* produce up to
around 1600 megawatts of electrical power, a typical marine propulsion
*reactor* produces no more than a few hundred megawatts. Space
considerations dictate that a marine *reactor* must be physically

A few hundred MW might be too much for the AK outback, but I'm sure
they could be derated to something more reasonable for the loads.

I ordered some, along with some of the magnetic parts holders someone
recommended as a base for the lights. The parts holders came right away, no
notice of the lights themselves. I called and got a nice American lady. She
said they had them in stock, but something messed up my order. She said she
corrected it. Another week or so and I received 4 gigantic boxes, with one
light each. So, for a grand total of $5.99 in shipping fees, they sent 5
separate FedEx packages, each of which was large enough to contain the entire
order. I can't imagine they made much profit on this transaction.

That said, I'm very happy with the lights. With the magnetic parts dishes they
will attach vertically or overhead, plus hold the lamp onto a flat non-metallic
surface.

It does seem silly to me to see the high end homes here plastered with solar
panels (48th parallel) and plug in for the Tesla or Leaf parked in the
driveway. I did learn that Seattle gets the same amount of insolation as
Alaska (as a whole). Seattle gets light year round of the same effective
wattage as Alaska, being light only half the time there. First week of
November past some idiot (AK) who just put panels on his roof was crowing about
how he had generated 4kw that week. He was all excited to rush down to Seattle
to purchase a used Leaf for $10k (there is a reason the off lease car was
cheap). I kept my mouth shut about how I hoped he would be walking or riding
his bike all winter, as the panels were not going to power his car. Not in the
-17c cold that Anchorage is having this week.

SWITZERLAND47-year-old nuclear power plant shuts down on live TVPublished:
Friday, December 20, 2019

Switzerland today shut down one of its oldest nuclear power plants, part of
a plan to end the domestic production of atomic energy before the middle of
the century.

Operator BKW took the Mühleberg Nuclear Power Plant, located 25 miles west
of the capital Bern, off the grid shortly after midday in a ceremony
broadcast live by Switzerland's main public TV station.

BKW, which is majority owned by the canton of Bern, said it plans to begin
dismantling the plant in January, a process that will take until 2034.
Decommissioning and deposing of radioactive remains is estimated to cost 3
billion Swiss francs ($3.1 billion).

Mühleberg is the smallest of Switzerland's four remaining nuclear power
plants. It began operation in 1972.

After the 2011 Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster in Japan, Switzerland
decided to gradually phase out nuclear power.

Switzerland is home to the world's oldest still-operating nuclear power
plant, Beznau, which will be shut down toward the end of 2029.

The remaining two nuclear plants, Gösgen and Leibstadt, will be shuttered
around 2040 and 2045, respectively.

Switzerland plans to significantly increase the production of renewable
energy from solar and wind over the coming decades to meet its power needs.
As part of the European grid, Switzerland also buys electricity from
neighboring countries such as France, which has numerous nuclear power

Earlier this week, campaigners submitted enough signatures to force a
referendum on incorporating the goal of making Switzerland "climate
neutral" by 2050 in the country's constitution. Doing so would require
ending virtually all burning of fossil fuels by midcentury. *— Associated

I recently saw an analysis that solar installations north of the 35th parallel
were a net CO2 loss, when all the CO2 emitted during production and
installation were compared to the same power provided by coal or one of the
other fossil fuels. In other words, installing solar panels to replace
electricity currently generated by fossil fuels will INCREASE the amount of CO2
released into the atmosphere, when the solar panels are installed north of 35
degrees.

Once the jeans get super soft and fade out at the thighs, I demote them to

Even then it takes a few years for that “fashion” distressed cuts to show up.

2019-12-27 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Thanks Craig that's how I'd guessed it'd be even if I didn't know how it
worked.
So that suggests that if the contact points on my spare more or less match the
original then it *should* work at least some.
Maybe I'll just order that other one before I do anything, its not terribly
expensive.

Yes, that is true.

The armature (output) coil and diodes are the parts which supply the
current.

There is a secondary effect of load because the output coil and diodes
will have more voltage drop due to the increased current. This will cause
the regulator to supply more excitation current to the armature to offset
the increased drop. If, however, the low-load excitation current is
sufficiently conducted through the brush(es), it is likely the (slightly)
increased excitation current required for high load will be sufficiently
conducted as well.

The last paragraph of the article at
https://www.usacarry.com/carrying-concealed-post-office/ says,

So since you cannot even carry onto the Post Office parking lot,
what should you do? Obviously, one option is to leave your gun
at home if you know you’ve got to stop by the Post Office. But
where I live there is a restaurant next to the Post Office, so
I always park in the restaurant parking lot and stash my gun in
the glove box and then walk over when I need to send a package
or mail a letter. Yes, it’s nonsense, but unfortunately, many
laws are.

Are these somewhat interchangable? I've got an alternator from a 190D that has
a 1 197 311 009 EL 14V 4C regulator. I presume thats a 55a alternator which
would probably be underpowered. Its got the wrong connector anyway but the
regulator looks as if it would fit.
All the connectors on the alt are crusty so my first plan of attack is to clean
those.I can't find a Bosch replacement regulator but this one looks mostly
right:
https://www.amazon.com/Alternator-Equipment-Tractors-0120488293-0120488205/dp/B07H9HDQJM
I *think* the regulator just sets the voltage, the alternator is responsible
for the current but my knowledge here is sketchy at best...

Yeah, not a bright boy when it came to bidding. Definitely tipped his hand and
did exactly the opposite of what you want to do. Bid incrementally with your
top price in mind. Chip, chip, chip away and watch the less serious bidders
fall by the wayside. Now you have your competition in sight if there is any,
and you can ratchet up your bids slightly to see if the competition will follow.

buybid22 was using 5-10k jump bids to demonstrate he was not at his limit.
The problem with that is when he later raised the bid from 32k to 33k he was
signaling that he was running out of money. So the opposition took it to 35k

There's federal law, and there's federal regulations which contradict federal
law but appellate courts uphold them anyway:
https://www.usacarry.com/carrying-concealed-post-office/
Most people can agree it’s illegal to carry concealed inside a Post Office.

I say “most,” because there are a good number of people who think it is legal.
You see, the United States Code (18 U.S.C. 930) that deals with firearms in
federal buildings has a section that says there are certain times you can carry
concealed in a federal building… “The lawful carrying of firearms or other
dangerous weapons in a Federal facility incident to hunting or other lawful
purposes.”

People argue that “other lawful purposes” means we can carry for personal
protection because we have a valid concealed carry permit. From what my lawyer
has told me and from all of the research I have done this is NOT true.

In fact, the Code of Federal Regulations – Title 39 – which is named “Conduct
on Postal Property” says “No person while on postal property may carry
firearms, other dangerous or deadly weapons, or explosives, either openly or
concealed, or store the same on postal property, except for official purposes.”
So hopefully you understand that you cannot carry concealed inside the Post
Office…

But that’s not my main concern and not why I wrote this today. The reason I
wrote this and the big mistake people make is that you’re not even allowed to
have your gun on Post Office Property. In other words, when you pull into the
parking lot and toss your gun into the glove compartment while you go mail a
letter, you are breaking the law.

I realize that may sound “dumb” and hard to believe, but the above Title 39
paragraph clearly states “on postal property, except for official purposes.”
Now, I had a student who told me that a friend of theirs got arrested in the
Post Office parking lot when a police officer watched him put his gun in his
glove box…

But the most significant proof I found is what actually happened to a postal
employee. A fellow named Clarence Dorosan used to store his gun in his car
while he went to work each day. Somehow, one of this supervisors found out he
had a gun in his car, and he was arrested and fired for having a gun on the
property. I’ve added appellate ruling where the judges upheld his original
conviction below this article.

The electric system in the ASV snowmobile trail groomer is sick. Years
of ham handed bodging (pre-me) have taken their toll.
I bought a 12 volt meter that plugs into the 12v socket. I've been
watching it, we made a run a few weeks ago when we had 2 feet of snow,
and I noticed that voltage would sag, I saw it get down into the low
11s. If I shut something off (the heater, some lights) voltage would
rise. Once we were done for the night I let the machine cool down and
voltage climbed over a few minutes into the 13s.
So the alternator works but isn't putting out enough power to run
everything we need which is weird, this is supposed to be a 120a
alternator and with LED lights the demand isn't so high. I didn't buy
the lights so these are estimates.front lights 40w x4 - 160w

lightbar - 120wrear light - 20w
So about 300w or about 25 amps. This has got to be down from the
incandescent lights that were there before.
Fortunately its a Bosch alternator:

BTW, is that E500 the W124 MB worked with Porsche on?   They're
incredible cars I'm told...

Hi Gang,
I hope all is well? My '06 E350 has been sitting long enough - I need to find
a short. I discovered the battery was being drained. I connected a Test Light
between the Neg Term and the the disconnected neg cable - the light was on full
bright.

I started pulling each fuse one after the other hoping one would cause the test
light to go out. I checked all I know of and none changed the test light. - I
pulled those in the truck, drivers area and engine compartment.

My next step to to disconnect the wiring (B+ maybe ??) on the Alternator to
see if that's the problem. Assuming that tells me nothing, is there any other
circuit checks I can try that might be draining the battery?

I need to test it some more - but it's a new battery, I can charge it to ~13.4V,
disconnect the charger and connect the + & - cables, attach my DMM and I can
watch the V's drop .04v every 2-4 seconds. Last time I checked it, I think it
stopped draining when it go to ~10 Vs if that tells us anything? Maybe it's a DOA?

I'm going to take the battery back to the store and have it tested on the off
chance it's a bad battery. What else can I check and which wire do I
disconnect on the Alternator?

Thanks ya'll, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Re: [MBZ] 06 MB E350 W211 w/electr issue

2019-12-27 Thread Larry Turner via Mercedes
yeah, there are 3 fuse boxes I know of - trunk, engine compart, near
drivers seat.  There are also a number of what I think are relays near
the battery/spare tire in the trunk.  I have a MB workshop manual and as
usual,  it takes a while to learn how to navigate it. I'm still learning.

re Aux Battery - yep, replaced it with no change.  The dash display
shows a battery symbol  and something saying it needs to be serviced.  I
need to buy a proper battery for the trunk and retest everything.  At
one point I had a fully charged battery and all the comfort extras
seemed to wake up and the tranny and everything else worked as they
should - things like cruise control, and some other things I don't
recall at the moment.  I haven't been able to spend time chasing
problems properly recently but hope to get a correct primary battery and
check things more completely.

It's a beautiful car and the engine runs great even with the CEL on.
Had that checked and there is a common problem with the balance shaft.
Spoke with two techs at MB and both said the same thing - spending
$3-$5K on a engine rebuild (MB prices).  They have had customers who did
have the engine repaired, reinstalled and couldn't tell a difference in
the way the engine behaved.  It seems the only thing different was the
CEL was off.  SO I'm not worried about the engine.  The AT is
different.  It has 2 driving modes: Sport and Comfort which are accessed
using a button on the console.  Much of the time recently, it was
impossible to change modes.  Also, to put it in Park, you must turn the
ign off to remove the key.

Cudo's to MB for extending the warranty +20 or 25 years (!) for the fuel
system.  When we had fuel smell they replaced everything around the fuel
tank - pumps, filters, etc.

Let's see, what else?  When the AT goes bonkers, it will not shift out
of 2nd making the engine run much higher than normal rpm's.  Not a major
flaw IMO but my wife is uncomfortable with such things ;-) Since she's
the primary driver I need to cater to her needs. Anyway, Battery 1st,
then we'll see.  But I fear the Alternator may be the reason for the
short causing the battery to drain quickly. But I need to jack the car
up so I can crawl under and disconnect a wire then test for the power
drain before I'll know.

Thx for the comments  --

06 E350  (from a perfect MB - exc for that little rust problem ;-) to
one with major problems)  Duh...
