Back in the day I had an instructor who advised: In the event of engine
failure (in a single engine light aircraft) the safest thing to do is to crash
straight ahead. In a light twin with engine failure the safest thing to do is
shut down the other engine and crash straight ahead.

own shadow, or the ice maker. It is pretty much a velcro dog to the people in
the house. 19 kilo lapdog.

Don't need one, but either or both the '70 220D and/or the '76 300D
had the
foot pump washer sprayer. The nozzles were clogged once, and when I
stomped

on it, the tube came out of the bulb and soaked my ankle. I ended up
replacing the assembly with a new one as the bulb outlet was cracking as
well ...

[MBZ] anyone need foot powered washer pump?

2020-01-08 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
These were used before the switch to electric washer pumps.   They were
used in the 110, and 111 among other models.   I really liked them
because you can vary the pressure, thus hit very high on the windshield,
or middle or just inside the wiper arc, depending on where the bug
accumulation was.

Craig, Good info.  Yes, that other Mann (Not our Herr Mann) is a
fruitcake:   Pathological liar,  proven fraud, narcissist, etc.    He
sued Mark Steyn

On his loss on his attempt to sue Mark Steyn:

This extraordinary outcome is expected to trigger severe legal
repercussions for Dr Mann in the U.S. and may prove fatal to climate
science claims that modern temperatures are "unprecedented." (snip)

Dr Mann lost his case because he refused to show in open court his
R2 regression numbers (the 'working out') behind the world-famous
   'hockey stick' graph[.]

Real science, not the phony "consensus" version, requires open access to
data so skeptics (who play a key role in science) can see if results are
reproducible.  Of course, there are no falsifiable experimental data
associated with the global warming predictions of doom, so it doesn't
really stand as science as Karl Popper defined it.

Hi ya gang, well that's it we're just about off, gotta pack the bags, do
a final check and then face the trauma of customs.
A big thank you for all your help and advice, we look forward to
catching up with a few of the list members, unfortunately we can't get
to meet everyone :'( but then we are on a time schedule.
Maybe we'll make it down to Des Moines or up to that atomic place but
the problem is the more you look the more you see to do, like Chicago,
I've been busy planning our itinerary in Chicago and there is actually
lots to see, we have booked tickets to see a baseball game in Chicago,
then there is the fish tank in the shedd, navy pier, planetarium, we
won't be doing that big tower cause Fay is a bit cagey about high places
but we are thinking we might have to spend an extra day in Chicago. I am
guessing that is how it's going to be in just about every place we go,
we'll need a holiday when we come home ;-)
Anywho, we are kinda excited, kinda nervous, like we are before every
big trip we do.
I will try and catch up on the list whilst I am on the road and update
you people with how we are going in that place you call home. Although
the first US meal will probably kill me and that will be that :-) our
plan is to buy kids meals :-D

https://www.breitbart.com/environment/2020/01/07/report-arson-epidemic-not-climate-change-behind-australias-bushfires/

Report: Arson Epidemic, Not Climate Change, Behind Australia’s Bushfires

Australian law enforcement has arrested over 180 people for arson in
connection with the nation’s raging bushfires, as alarmists try to pin
the blazes on “climate change.”

All of the 183 alleged arsonists have been arrested since the start of
this year’s bushfire season, the Australian reported Tuesday, adding that
29 fires were deliberately started in the Shoalhaven region of southeast
New South Wales (NSW) in just three months.

Drawing on data from NSW Bureau of Crime and Statistics and Research, the
newspaper reported that “183 people have been charged or cautioned for
bushfire-related offences since November 8, and 24 arrested for
deliberately starting bushfires.”

The extent of the arson is vast, as police have arrested people for
lighting bushfires across Queensland, NSW, Victoria, South Australia, and
Tasmania in the past few months, police data reveals.

In Queensland alone, 101 people have been detained for setting fires in
the bush, 32 adults and 69 juveniles, police noted.

According to professor Janet Stanley of Melbourne University, the
arsonists are typically young males, aged 12 to 24, or older men in their
60s.

Meanwhile, alarmists have been excitedly pointing to the bush fires as
evidence of a worldwide climate emergency caused by fossil fuel emissions.

A Royal Australian Navy MH-60R Seahawk ‘Romeo’ Helicopter
departs HMAS Adelaide during Operation Bushfire Assist.
Army Reserve forces and other specialist capabilities have
been called in to help with firefighting efforts across
Australia, along with extra Defence ships and helicopters.
14 people have now died in the fires in NSW, Victoria and
South Australia since New Year’s Eve.
(Australian Department of Defence via Getty Images)

On New Year’s day, the Guardian published an essay by Michael Mann,
arguably the world’s preeminent climate alarmist, who said he was
“watching climate change in action” while on holiday in Australia.

In his article “Australia, your country is burning – dangerous climate
change is here with you now,” Mann claimed he was witnessing the
devastating effects of climate change “first hand.”

Best known for his debunked “hockey stick” graph showing supposedly
unprecedented 20th-century global warming after centuries of allegedly
stable temperatures, Mann wrote that instead of “vast expanses of
rainforest framed by distant blue-tinged mountain ranges,” he looked out
into “smoke-filled valleys, with only the faintest ghosts of distant
ridges and peaks in the background.”

“The brown skies I observed in the Blue Mountains this week are a product
of human-caused climate change,” Mann asserted.

“The warming of our planet – and the changes in climate associated with
it – are due to the fossil fuels we’re burning: oil, whether at midnight
or any other hour of the day, natural gas, and the biggest culprit of
all, coal,” he declared.

Australians “need only wake up in the morning, turn on the television,
read the newspaper or look out the window to see what is increasingly
obvious to many – for Australia, dangerous climate change is already
here,” Mann stated.

“Australia is experiencing a climate emergency. It is literally burning,”
he said.

Well, burning, yes. Man-made, yes.

But it’s called arson, not climate change.

The beast is a mid size doodle. It has “hair” or a pelt, not fur, according to
SWMBA. It does know better than to go outside just for kicks. Potty breaks
are pretty much out, drop it, and dash back in. It has not seemed worse for
wear during walks. The dog does have two rain coats, as it sucks up moisture
like a rag mop which takes hours on end to dry.

The mutt will sit outside in the falling snow for hours just waiting to bark at
a moose or some poor kid walking home from school.

Re: [MBZ] Windows 10 Upgrade from 7

2020-01-08 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
On mine I disabled that pci card in device manager that said it needed a
driver. I’m doing the install again right now and it appears to actually
install windows 10, because it boots into it then downloads updates. It’s
currently at 13% on updates. Will see if it works this time or not. I am not
sure how far into updates it got before but I’m pretty sure it has at least
made at least this far.

Well just restarted and now it’s undoing changes so failed again.

2020-01-08 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
Probably but it is annoying that their upgrade program does not appear
to work. I am not asking it to do anything odd.
The laptop is an Acer with an i5 chip and 6 G of RAM and lots of hard
drive space.

It is a few years old but hardly an antique.

claimed to work but none of them appear to do so.

I am essentially frustrated with Microsoft once again. I have toyed with
the idea of moving to Ubuntu for a long while but never have. Now seems
like a good time to put it on this laptop and try it out.

I may be stuck with Windows on my office computer as there are a couple
of programs that I use that pretty much require it but apart from that
the office could no doubt go to linux as well.

All Linux

Browser - Firefox and Chromium, but also occasionally links2, or
lynx, dillo or hv3

email client - claws-mail and thunderbird

PDF viewer - evince, but not since GNOME3. Now MATEs version
atril. And xpdf.

pdf creating - ghostscript, pdftk, and imagemagick, and CUPS. But
many programs have a built-in "print to file".

image/photo editing - bitmap. the GIMP, krita, imagemagick.

vector graphics - inskscape

CAD - libreCAD

spreadsheet - libreoffice, openoffice, and gnumeric

word processing - libreoffice, openoffice, and abiword

music player - rhythmbox, mpd, vlc, mplayer

video player - vlc, xine, mplayer, ffmpeg

And I missed a couple in my list of "can't live without".

emac, a text editor and more.

xcircuit for schematic drawing, and other drawings that benefit
from pre-defined objects.

fcron, system scheduler. I find it more flexible and usable than
anacron or cron.

synergy, current open-source port called barrier. Not the new,
Synergy2 which abandoned open-source, but the older one. This
allows sharing keyboard and mouse across multiple computers. So
as I sit here with my desktop's keyboard under my fingers, I can
move my mouse off the right end of my screen and it shows up on my
laptops's screen. Now I can type, mouse, copy/paste on my laptop.

Further explanation on a few of the ones I did list.

sshfs. Kinda like nfs, but not. nfs requires setting config
files, has various issues, transfers files in the clear, but
seems to not mind if the network disconnects and re-connects. In
contrast, sshfs can be setup in fstab, but I mostly use it on the
fly, no config, simple command. Transfers are encrypted, but it's
pretty unhappy if the network fails and will not reconnect on it's
own.

I use it to view, edit, move, copy files on remote computers
- which might be the laptop sitting next to me, but could be my
Android 'phone, or a computer in another state. Because the far
filesystem is mounted locally, I get to use all my tools. So on
my 'phone, by installing a simple SSH server and mounting it on a
directory on my desktop computer with sshfs, I get all my desktop
tools (find, grep, emacs, GIMP, etc) to work on files on the
phone.

Another slick use is to mount another users files as though they
were mine. I have a system user (clicker) with limited privileges
that owns all the photos. To protect these, none of the ordinary
users have write access. So if I have photos on my 'phone that I
want copied to the photo directories I have a problem. Clicker
doesn't have access to the phone ssh server. I have access to the
phone, but don't have write access to clickers dir. So I sshfs
mount the phone to Dir1, and sshfs mount as user clicker the photo
dir on Dir2. Now I can just copy files from the phone to Dir1 to
Dir2 and all the permissions stay correct.

Unison - file synchronizing. Fast and efficient. And by default
shows me a list of all the files that will be changed, and whether
it's a real change or just a permissions change.

I have not been able to make the upgrade work either. I have been trying

It appears to work to begin but then hangs up when it is trying to
download the updates at 46%. I have tried a number of remedies that are
claimed to work but none of them appear to do so.

I am essentially frustrated with Microsoft once again. I have toyed with
the idea of moving to Ubuntu for a long while but never have. Now seems
like a good time to put it on this laptop and try it out.

I may be stuck with Windows on my office computer as there are a couple

Re: [MBZ] 124 rear subframe

2020-01-08 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

Thanks Jaime!   Good info

Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes wrote on 1/8/20 5:15 AM:

I had a discussion with my alignment guy last week about this topic. Hes
been at it almost 40 years and specializes in european cars. He confirmed
that the the links can be torqued down without the spring installed. Its
important that the axle is horizontal, as stated in the workshop manual (it
doesn't state the weight of the car should be on the suspension for most of
the links). The critical point is to have the bushing held in a position
where they will not be under tension when the car is sitting on its
wheels. How you achieve this (with/without spring, vehicle on the ground,
subframe out of the car, etc) isn't important.

After the 4 links are done and installed in the car, you can install the
spring and spring link, then support the car with a floor jack or the wheel
on blocks to bring the suspension to the correct position to torque down
the spring link. Then install the sway bar and shock, as these will work
against you if you install them first.

Good luck,
Jaime

Re: [MBZ] 124 rear subframe

2020-01-08 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Thanks Karl.   That was the approach I was thinking of, more or less.  I
can see having the diff and axles mounted, and I could also see
installing without the diff and axles.   The aussie Rick showed did it
with just the subframe and links, then added wheel carriers, diff and
axles.

I think it makes sense to tighten everything on the bench in position,
then drop one end of  the lca to add spring.  I think it COULD be done
with springs in place, but that would be easier if you had threaded rods
for guides in the subframe mounts.

Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
January 8, 2020 at 12:36 AM
I had all new links, new diff and axles and a new subframe, so I replaced
the lower carrier bearings then assembled the whole shooting match on a
table, then lowered it onto a dolly and slid it under the car with the car
on blocks. Then I put a jack under the diff and lifted the whole thing
into

place. Lined up the front bolts each side first, then the rear bolts, one
bolt at a time. It takes a bit of fiddling to get the whole mess balanced
over the jack point; I used a 2x6 under the diff andtried several slight
movements of the jack on the 2x6 until it balanced. The new swaybar, upper
sway link bolts and upper sls strut bolts were installed before the
subframe went in, then attached.

The link tightening is far easier to do on the bench than on the car
and it

is easy to position the carriers properly before tightening, to avoid too
much bushing torque at final ride height. Same with the axle bolts, outer
axle nuts, and diff mount bolts front and back. You can also eyeball the
toe links and adjust the eccentric bolts to similar positions to get it in
the ballpark for the drive to the alignment shop. I left the inner main
control arm bushings loose, then after bolting the subframe in put the
springs and new pads in and gingerly with appropriate trepidation and arms
length gently jacked the arm up until the main spherical bearing bolt hole
lined up with the carrier bearing, adding some blocks under it as I went.
Once that bolt is in you can relax a bit and fit the lower sls shock and
swaybar bolts by adjusting the height of the jack and wiggling the swaybar
links, and tighten the inner main control arm bolt. The first side took 30
minutes. The second side took 5 minutes.

Remount the brake calipers. Put the wheels on. Mount the new flex discs
and driveshaft/center bearing. Hook up the new parking brake cables and
adjust the length. Hook up the ABS sensor wire and any of that traction
control stuff if the car has it. Exhaust will need to go back on
eventually, and splash shields, but not needed for shakedown. Everything
else is already torqued, so test the brakes and take a ride. Dont
forget to

add hydraulic fluid and or brake fluid if any was drained out, and check
for leaks. Check the diff fluid level or change it out while the subframe
is out of the car.

upgrade from Windows 7.  Too often the spec sheet says it will work, but
it's just not a great idea even if it manages to work somehow.

Re: [MBZ] Windows 10 upgrade failed again

2020-01-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I was going to say "we don't support video editing from a VM" but actually we
do. Go price an nVidia Tesla v100, I'll wait...
Now you see why I don't care to edit video from a VM. ;) Plus you need a thin
client and theres an AV offset you have to compensate for, its kind of a pain.
Really cool for schools though, make the boot volume of the VM non-presistent
and reboot between students, sweet.

I banish those specialty applications to a virtual machine.  And I
have a bunch. [sigh]  The host is GNU/Linux.  From the host
(Linux) I have good software for browser, email client, pdf
viewer, pdf creating, image/photo editing, vector graphic editing,
CAD, spreadsheet, word processing, music player, video player,
etc.  And then some programs that I rather depend on - some which
might be Linux only, like sshfs, encfs, unison, ssh, SoX, ffmpeg,
BASH, etc.

The virtual machine is for hardware specific software like audio
DSP control, audio mixer remote control, wireless microphone
management, and so on.  Wine doesn't work for most of 'em.

Audio editing in Linux is fair.  Audacity is good at what it does,
but is not a real DAW. Ardour is kinda tricky and picky but is
quite capable.

Video editing in Linux is not so great.  Cinelerra is the best
I've found so far - clumsy, picky, and hard to use. Avid and
FinalCutPro from 20 years ago was better.  I haven't use either in
more than a decade so I don't know how those two are now - but I
do miss FinalCutPro version 2 when I want to edit video.

Almost any Linux will be no more trouble than Apple or
Microsoft.  Just different - and much more "within your control".

I think that is a description of Win10!!  The control prefs are
such a pain.  New names for the same control.  Access path seems
to be different every time I use it., control some stuff from
here, some from there, some from dialogs from Win7, some from
WinXP - maybe even some from Win95!

No I meant from fresh media, by which I mean download the .iso for Win10 and
use Rufus to make a boot disk.
Going to fresh media is a good idea too.

Do you mean "reinstall TO fresh media"?

A new SSD is cheap compared to buying a whole new PC. Maybe his system can
accept two hard drives, so he can keep his existing drive as the data disc.

[MBZ] OT: Lithium sulfur battery developed in Oz

2020-01-08 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Jan. 7, 2020

Australian scientists say they've developed a lithium-sulfur battery
durable enough to become the preferred power source for electric vehicles
with double the range of a Tesla.

Lithium-sulfur batteries are typically less expensive than lithium-ion
types now used in electric cars, but they degrade quickly when delivering
high volumes of energy.

The Australian breakthrough could change that by providing a more stable
cathode, the end of the battery that discharges electrical currents.

As described in a study published last weekend in *Science Advances*, the
lithium-sulfur technology could eventually power a car for well over 600
miles, far outstripping the range of lithium-ion and effectively wiping
away consumer concerns about the capabilities of electric models.

"The increased specific energy of this next generation of lithium batteries
should allow for 1000km (621 miles) [of range] and more," while preserving
cost advantages, wrote Mahdokht Shaibani, a research fellow and lead author
of the study by professors at Monash University in Melbourne.

The lithium-sulfur technology, she added, wouldn't use cobalt — a mineral
largely sourced from Congo and associated with reports of labor abuses.
Cobalt is expected to come into short supply over the next decade.

Sulfur, by contrast, is "historically very cheap to acquire" and "in
significant abundance," Shaibani noted in an email to E News.

The invention still needs work. The stability of the lithium anode needs to
be increased fivefold, she said, and the management system that monitors
and protects the battery is in its early stages.

It's also likely to face scrutiny from battery analysts who maintain
lithium-ion is here to stay as the reigning technology for EVs, especially
if supply chains mature in coming years. Some automakers, like Fiat
Chrysler Automobiles NV and General Motors Co., have also begun to invest
in plants where their cars' lithium-ion batteries will be assembled.

Still, other corners of the industry are hedging their bets. Majors like
Ford Motor Co. and Volkswagen AG have researchers working on
commercializing solid-state batteries with 500-mile-plus range. Governments
in the United States, Australia and Europe are also funding work on
lithium-sulfur.

Shaibani said her team was in talks with EV and aircraft companies over
possible funding and collaboration, underscoring that her battery's
chemistry could allow them to avoid the shortages of raw materials that
some analysts expect in coming years.

"The switch to an alternative battery is inevitable, and [lithium-sulfur]
seems to be the heir apparent to lithium-ion," she wrote.

Re: [MBZ] 124 rear subframe

2020-01-08 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Karl, Jaime: what about fine tuning the alignment of the differential, once
you get to the point of connecting the driveshaft? IIRC, when I swapped
differentials on my 124 last fall, new bushings were supposed to be
installed with a special tool in order to get the differential aimed
directly at the driveshaft so the entire assembly would be straight and (I
assume) minimize flexing at the flex disc and sideways loading on the
bearing at the nose of the differential. I didn't have the special factory
tool, used a Mark 1 Mod 0 Eyeball and calipers, paid attention to alignment
of the old diff and focused on getting the new diff into the same
position. The fore/aft depth of each bushing can affect the diff
alignment, if they are grossly different.
