I am not a farmer but this did not make much sense to me. If those of
you who know better think I am wrong on some of these points, please
feel free to set me straight.

First off, how could they be a profitable farm for generations growing
hay and alfalfa on only 24 acres? I would think a small plot like that
needed to be a market garden or maybe an orchard.
Then they say that tomatoes and peppers will grow better with shade.
We have pretty much given up on our little garden because the trees
have grown bigger and we don't get enough sun. We should be good to go
with that shade but it does not work here.

They suggest these folks are going to make money on a 5 acre plot of
vegetables and that they are going to give the veggies away to folks
who invest in their project to install solar panels. That does not
sound like a successful farm. It sounds like an indirect way to cover
farm land with solar panels and thus reduce the amount of farm land -
not a really good thing for those of us who enjoy eating.

They also talk about using small tractors and hand picking the
produce. That doesn't sound all that efficient to me. It may require
importing more folks from Mexico and the fellow in the White House
seems opposed to that unless these folks work on a golf course.

But isn't it interesting how the writer puts a spin on it so it sounds
so idyllic? Gee, free electricity and free veggies. Do they make a
Prius tractor yet?

Re: [MBZ] OT: Article on Solar Panels for cash-strapped farms.

2020-02-18 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
First of all:   Assuming all 24 acres is arable, (very doubtful) there
would be a house and outbuildings taking up an acre or more.   22 - 24
acres does not make a viable farm, even in the age of horse or mule
drawn equipment (40 acres and a mule.)  My grandfather and
greatgrandfather managed 160 acres with 3 teams, but probably 1/4 was
timber.   So to begin with this alfalfa crop was not enough production
to support the family, as was implied in the article.

Second: "providing shade for crops like tomatoes, peppers, kale, and
beans"   These are sun loving plants. Shading them will reduce
production.  Pi$$ poor choice..   Any agronomist or horticulturalist
would have searched out plants that need shade.   Ginseng may be a
viable option, but they are 900 or 1000 miles from the market in the
USA.  For the minimal production under 5 acres with some unknown
percentage of coverage, that small amount of ginseng might be able to be
sold in the local east range market, if sufficient resources were spent
to develop a new market.   The solar panel racks would make ideal
structure to hang shadecloth from for the ginseng.

Third:   Tomato harvesters have been around for 40 years.  Small
combines have been built for more than 50 years by universal harvester,
Almaco and others.  (but it would still have to be a very high value
crop to justify the expense of a combine and harvesting.)  The small
combines are made for seed companies who get $100 a bushel and more for
their crop.

fourth:  The only way to make this anything but a hobby farm is
production of high value crops:  Fruits and vegetables for the local
restaurant market, but this is Horticulture:  By definition LABOR
INTENSIVE.   So unless the family intends to quit their jobs and go
without health insurance, it ain't gonna happen on a scale sufficient to
support a family

Fifth:   My guess is that this guy is very well connected politically,
and has greased the skids for taxpayer money to fund this.

To make it into a community (co-op) farm I could see it. I know little to
nothing about growing vegetables, so how viable it is for what they propose is
beyond me. It is Colorado, so it’s quite sunny most of the year. Maybe that’s
how they get around the shade issue? Lots more sun, even indirectly?

We have a big co-op farm south of me in Wimauma, which is a huge tomato and
cucumber growing area. So large they have packing plants located there to
handle the harvest. You pay $5/year to belong, and twice a month for $20 you
get a big basket’s worth of locally grown produce that’s based on seasonal
availability. I’ve done it a couple of times, but it’s too much for us and a
lot of it gets wasted. It’s a good idea, and I see a lot of people who are
clearly feeding large families that are probably doing well with it as compared
to buying the stuff at the local grocery store.

Our local electric utility (TECO) is trying to build a big “solar farm” in a
rural county to the north of us. The locals want no part of it. I don’t
understand, as they complain that it will ruin the “look” of the area. Right
now it’s a huge open pasture. Not sure why covering it with solar panels would
make a difference.

Oh - and to give you an idea of how messed up our solar stuff is in Florida due
to the legislators being in the pockets of the utilities - you can pay extra to
buy power produced from solar if you want to be “green".

Auction ended yesterday with me on top at $675. I then received a counter offer
for $1025 or whatever it was. I simply clicked stay at my bid. Fast forward to
today. I drove to Little Rock for my work trip and stopped along the way to
look at the car. It was cold and sprinkling and I found the car. It was
basically parked with a huge mud hole around it but I was able to get in and
look interior is very clean except the drivers seat has a couple of tears in
the leather. This is the first time I have seen these sort of seats in person.
Evidentially this style has Tex on the sides with leather in the middle. Data
card calls it Tex leather. All of the parts including head, turbo etc are in
the trunk. All of the bolts and screws are in ziplock bags and labeled. Head
looks good and crack free. Has all new glows plugs in all but #1 which has an
easy out sticking out of it. So we figured out the problem. I don’t know if the
easy out is stuck or not. I thought with the head off a broke off plug is easy
to remove. Maybe not. I could not get the hood open. It felt like it was popped
but would not release. Since the photos show the under hood it has to open
somehow. I wanted to see what the cylinders looked like.

About an hour ago I checked into the Embassy Suites here in Little Rock. A few
minutes later I get an alert that I won the auction. CRAP. Why could that have
not happened yesterday so I could have brought the trailer. I guess now this
broke glow plug is my problem. The car does appear to be nice though. I guess
I’m going to have to make another trip. Very inconvenient

Unfortunately, the thing we liked the most were fresh tomatoes and they
don't grow well in the shade. We have mostly given up and buy our fresh
veggies from the local market garden when they are in season. We are
also fortunate to have good neighbors who have a larger garden on some
land out of the city that belongs to her brother. They are quite
generous with vegetables too.

We are reduced to talking about washing machines.

Anyone got a spare MB tri-star emblem that they can install on their
washer and then post a photo of so that we can remain sort of on topic?

Re: [MBZ] OT front loading washing machine bearings

2020-02-18 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
Did you look online for information on the make and model? With ours, it
was easy to find out how to open the top. On it, there are 2 clips on
the front between the top and the front panel. Pushing in with a putty
knife releases the clips and then one can pivot the top upwards out of
the way and access screws that hold the front panel onto the side
panels. Remove one screw on each side at the top and the front panel
then tilts out and can be removed. That opens up the washer to the point
where most of it is accessible.

I had an old friend, who has since passed on at the age of 93, who was
quite proud of the fact that they were still using a dryer that they had
purchased in the 40's. He had replaced bits of it a number of times and
retrofitted newer parts to take the place of items no longer available.
It had become a challenge for him to keep it going as long as he could.
I believe it outlived him.

One of the concerns with longevity of our washer is that it is rusting
in the bottom. I was not going to mess around with paint so I sprayed
Boeshield B9 (I think that is the name of the stuff) on the rusty spots
in the bottom in an effort to slow down the rusting. I have used it on
things in the garage and it seems to work well. That is good as the
stuff is expensive.

Re: [MBZ] OT front loading washing machine bearings

2020-02-18 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
We had a somewhat similar issue with a Maytag top loading washer
recently. It was becoming unglued on the spin cycle too. It vibrated a
lot which caused the control panel to vibrate against the top of the
washer which created a lot of noise. I kept saying I would have a look
at it and she kept saying she just wanted to buy a new washer.  I had a
look online and the best suggestion seemed to be that 6 springs that go
between the base and the drum around the tub become weak over time. The
cost was pretty reasonable so I got a set and installed them. That
reduced the vibration substantially. We don't recall what it was like
when new but it appears to be much improved and much quieter so she is
happy once again. The control panel housing still rattled against the
top of the washer and there did not appear to means to tighten it so I
cut some pieces of fairly soft plastic out of something from the
recycling bin and pushed them into the crack between the top and the
housing and that solved the problem. I think a bead of silicon would
have worked fine but she was concerned that it would be hard to keep
clean so I looked for another alternative.

I can say that changing out the springs was a miserable job. The 3 in
front were not bad but the 3 in the back were hardly possible so I cut a
good sized hole in the back of the cabinet and worked on it from behind.
An air nibbler made short work of cutting a neat hole. I did not bother
to put the piece back in. It cannot be seen on the back and the cabinet
did not appear to be weakened.

I had difficulty stretching the new springs into position. They used to
sell a tool for doing the job but it is not longer available. I ended up
using a set of long vice grips and a set of small vice grips plus a
block of 6 X 6 about 6 inches high. The long vice grips would not grip
the spring wire hard enough not to slip so I put the small set of vice
grips on the wire and then used the long ones under the little ones and
pried the spring up using the block of wood as the fulcrum. It took me
most of a week working for a bit every night. I took it apart on Sunday
evening and removed the old springs on Monday evening. I was busy
Tuesday evening and did not work on it. Wednesday night I cut the hole
in the back and fought with it. Thursday we got the set of long vice
grips because I did not have enough leverage to get the springs on
further into the cabinet where it was more difficult to reach while
laying on the floor behind the washer. Thursday night I got the 3 back
springs on. Then I got interrupted  when my son in Ottawa called to wish
me a happy birthday and gave up for the night. Friday night I got the 3
front springs on and put the cabinet back together. Saturday, I opened
up the dryer and cleaned the lint out of it. Then we hooked both the
washer and dryer back up and ran them and all was well. Not really my
idea of fun. I am happy that I did not become an appliance repairman but
I was happy to repair the thing so that it will work for a while longer.

Re: [MBZ] Injector Black Death [was: Re: I leave town and people get a brilliant idea to buy the kid a car while I am gone]

2020-02-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
M642, I think.

There’s a forked shaped clamp that holds the injector in place, with a copper
crush washer at the nozzle that seals (or tries to) against combustion gasses.
A couple of issues with this design:

The bolt that holds the forked clamp is small and tends to stretch over time as
it ages. That means the pressure on the injector decreases, allowing combustion
gasses to leak past the crush ring. The injector is long, maybe 6”- 8”, and has
a correspondingly long bore through the head. These escaping gasses move out of
the bore, cooling as they go, eventually allowing the condensed fuel and gasses
to bubble up around the injector and puddle in the “valley” on top of the head,
where they harden into a solid mass of nastiness. Black Death, as it’s known.

The bolts and the bores they go into in the head are weak. That is, the bore
for the bolt ends just above the water jacket in the head. If you don’t make
sure there’s absolutely NOTHING in the bore before you thread one of the clamp
bolts in, the bolt will build up pressure in the bore with any fluid in it and
literally punch a hole through into the water jacket. This appears to be very
common. If it occurs, you can end up having leaks from the water jacket around
the bolt.

The design is not bad, just sort of half-assed if you ask me.

Replacing a sealing ring can be tricky. You have to cut a new seat fo the ring
inside the injector bore, as the escaping gasses will erode the seat. If you
just pop a new sealing ring in place and call it a day you’ll have leaks right
out of the gate, guaranteed.

The torque on the bolts is infinitesimally small. 7 inch pounds, if I recall
correctly. There’s also a tightening sequence, as they are stretch bolts. You
hit the prescribed torque, then tighten a half turn in quarter turn increments.
This is one of the scariest things I’ve ever done on a car, as you’re just
waiting for the bolt to break off. And they do. Most people are doing a quarter
turn and that’s all. I don’t blame them.

It’s a sad situation, as these are really great engines/cars from what little
exposure I’ve had to them. Sort of the pinnacle of late 90s engineering and
design. As I mentioned previously, they’re really easy to work on like a W210
and the chassis is pretty robust in the same sense. I would seriously consider
owning one myself if I could find one that was solid and had been properly
maintained.

Yeah, it’s a really great car in a lot of respects, as it seems to bridge the
reliability and ease of service from the W210s to the complexity and difficulty
of service of later models.

While this particular car is a little “tired”, so to speak, it’s still got some
miles left in it if properly cared for.

Re: [MBZ] Injector Black Death [was: Re: I leave town and people get a brilliant idea to buy the kid a car while I am gone]

2020-02-18 Thread Rick Knoble via Mercedes
>> What causes the Injector Black Death thing?

The injector seals start weeping combustion gases, and the injectors become
ever more seized in place by carbon deposits. The longer it is neglected, the
more difficult it is to remove them v

It is a great negotiating point, if has just started and is not too far gone.

Other than that, and maybe a few other things, these are probably the best cars
MB ever produced.

Don’t know. He just said a couple of the injectors were seeping, as they do
when the Black Death occurs. I’ve got the tools and parts, it’s a major
undertaking that I wasn’t willing to mess with unless an injector was leaking.
Leave well enough alone, in other words. That and I can see some evidence of
shade tree repairs to the hold down bolts of some of the other injectors that
are not leaking, so I’m not about to open a can of worms.

I replaced seals on #3 and #4. Those were the only ones leaking when I got the
car.

Re: [MBZ] I might have to pursue this one

2020-02-18 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Why would you want to pay more than scrap for a car with no head? Do you
need the interior or something? Cylinders are probably rusted etc. And a
head is not going to be cheap. Probably overheated it or something.

I figured one would pull all of them and replace the seals if any one was
leaking. Are the new seals going bad already?

Slide hammer and some sort of long pick to get the seal out?

Yeah, but I'm not finding the email. What year is it?

Nice!

But clutch work is too much trouble. I'll take it off your hands
for $300, and even come get it!
