For the "it's like the flu" crowd, a little RWN interview with a guy
currently quarantined in Italy. Link will self destruct in a day or so.

Good deal indeed. I've paid up to $500 for these. The kit still requires lower

The oil business is running out of places to hide the excess. A bunch of
refiners are closed or burnt down, so the flow to process it ain’t what it used
to be. Toss in 10% corn ethyl, so less processing need. Electric cars need no
oil. Pretty soon there will be no more empty oil cars, as they will all be
fully laden and sitting on abandoned track spurs throughout the nation.

State of AK instituted a hiring freeze and no more work travel. Beer flu has
destroyed the major source of revenue. Tax on oil extracted. The most recent
budget was calculated on $70/bbl and it was short by about 30% of meeting the
need. Also, there are funds socked away in market investments. That tanked
massively, oil dropped by over 50%, and when the ice melts, small time miners
are going to be hitting the rivers looking for gold which is becoming a much
better investment in these trying times.

2020-03-11 Thread Clay via Mercedes
The end of the World is on its way.

Washington Governor has banned gatherings of more than 250 people. That puts
the brakes on oh so many things. No more Costco shopping, sporting events,
schools, plays and operas, as well as ballet. No more Antifa marches, waiting
to board airplanes ( moot right now, as most are flying empty) TSA lines,
Wallyworld, Mega churches, tourists hanging around places of interest, the
ferries are making drivers remain in their cars, movie houses are making folks
sit in checkerboard patterns at the multiplex, table dances by strippers are
right out, but you can hang out in the wanker booths as long as the girls are
behind glass. The homeless are exempt as they gather in scrums and excrete all
over the place. No more LGBTQRSTUVWXYZ parades, transit workers will have to
come on in stages, same with cops being limited at donut shops, and all the
mall workers already lost their jobs to the River of Large Wimmen, so that
leaves the box sorters at UPS and the drivers, as well as postal workers.

I am astounded the news people have not gone on a rampage reporting all the
dead street people.

Most high line Italian cars require engine removal for major service. Maserati,
Lamborghini, etc., all have requirements like this. You can’t shoehorn an
engine into a mid-engined car and expect it to be serviceable in any sense of
the word. Even some of the the cheap ones, like the Fiat X1/9, required engine
removal for major service - I know, I’ve worked on them.

I know of Maserati services that are due every 10k-15k that require engine
removal on some models. If you’ve got the money to own/operate one of these

2020-03-11 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
if it has timing belts, I could see that.   Might have to take the
engine out.   Nobody ever said horses were cheap to keep.  This fall
into the category of "if you have to ask, you can't afford it."  like
rollers.   Might have cost $5k to fly they guy in from NY, miami or
somewhere and keep him for a day.

Les Blumner, and to some extent, Pierre are into that biz.   I always
wondered what the going rate is.  For MB, i;d guess $1000 a day plus
travel expenses, plus $200 to $300 an hour.   But is you own a 600 or
other M100, you expect to pay in that range.  They may skip the daily
rate and raise the hourly.  or have a lower hourly, no daily, but charge
for travel time.  Endless combinations...

You may have to take the engine out just to change the belts.   Ever
read about what it took to adjust the valves on a Bugatti?   It was
amazing, even in the 30s.

Craig via Mercedes wrote on 3/11/20 5:32 PM:

around Norfolk.   You can always get  to OK friday night.

Re: [MBZ] Gasoline in Diesel

2020-03-11 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
yup.   While our old MBs can run on up to 50% Benzin, it is not
recommended, except in extremely cold situations.  LIke -30 to -40 ºF.
A JD, cat,  or Perkins (MF or marine or other) or Allis chalmers of the
same vintage would blow the head off.

G Mann via Mercedes wrote on 3/11/20 3:20 PM:

Best advice I can offer is, "IF in doubt, pump it out."

The cost of pumping out the tank and disposal is small compared to trying
to run a late model diesel truck on gasoline. If it is a computer
controlled diesel with EPA systems, multiple sensors will take damage and
all of the items are expensive to replace and repair costs far exceed just
pumping out the tank.

Suggestion: Purchase a low pressure 12v fuel pump, fittings and polly line
[ace hardware has it in bulk, it's a use one time and discard item anyway...
Connect the aux 12v pump into the tank pickup tube and pump the offending
fuel in to a suitable container.
Refil tank with fresh diesel, change the fuel filter [s] and drive on.

It’s still a pretty small airport. I did see another large runway across the

TD Ameritrade trades are free, as are most brokerages these days. They also
have some plans where you can invest in fractional shares, too. That usually
works better than employer managed accounts, as they typically only allow full
share purchases, meaning your money can site for a bit and not do anything
until you accrue enough to buy a share.

Re: [MBZ] Gasoline in Diesel

2020-03-11 Thread G Mann via Mercedes

Re: [MBZ] OT stocks on sale

2020-03-11 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I'm making smaller moves, just 2% or so, buying on weakness.

I think we've gotten all the bad news we can get, or anticipated all the
bad news that might happen, so the market has priced all that in now.

The other 'possible' bad news that we won't know until later is who the
next President will be. Trump, and markets will keep climbing. Democrat,
and I'm betting the markets will level off or even drop. I won't sell in
the case of the latter, the stock market will still be the best investment
vehicle out there in my opinion. However in the case of the former, I may
move some of my cash back into the market for a few months or so to ride
the wave up.

Market timing in general is not a great idea. Dollar-cost averaging is
the way to go.

That's actually how I buy gasoline too. I buy a set dollar amount each
time, so I buy more gas when it's cheap and less when it's expensive
without having to think about it.

The Saudis are really trying to slap Pootie’s bag. They’re clearly quite
unhappy. Their economy is not in that great of shape, so dumping oil isn’t

Why:  to be able to stabilize the market.
Why:  We stockpile every other component of national defense.  Hitler

national defense issue.   This is the first time I had heard the gress

Why:  The gov used to buy up things like milk, cheese, grain, peanut
butter and so forth.  (I don't know if they still do)  Why not have fuel

Why:  it takes time and resources to extract crude, refine it and
transport it to where it is needed.  Right now, if one refinery shuts

 wrote:

The Department of Energy this morning postponed its upcoming sale of crude
oil from the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve following a historic dip
in oil prices that has roiled world markets.

The move halts the sale of some 12 million barrels of crude from three of
the reserve's locations along the Gulf Coast. That sale was mandated by
Congress as part of the Bipartisan Budget Agreement Act of 2015.

"In light of the recent fluctuations in global oil markets, the U.S.
Department of Energy is suspending the recently announced sale of crude oil
from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR)," spokeswoman Jess Szymanski
said in the announcement.

Oil markets saw their biggest drop in 29 years yesterday as fears of the
new coronavirus combined with a price war between Russia and Saudi Arabia
to create market uncertainty (*Greenwire
*, March 9).

Prices dropped to as low as $31 per barrel but have seen a slight increase
to $33 today. President Trump spoke with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin
Salman this morning about the situation, the White House said.

"The sale was designed to raise revenue for SPR facility maintenance and
upgrades," Szymanski added. "Given current oil markets, this is not the
optimal time for the sale."

She added, "The Department continually monitors and evaluates global oil
markets and will provide updated information as market conditions change."

DOE first announced the sale in a news release at the end of last month.
Bids were due at 2 p.m. EDT today.

Lawmakers on Capitol Hill questioned the timing yesterday, fearing it would
add to the problem by putting more supply into an already saturated
market (*E
Daily *, March 10).

Established in the wake of the 1970s Middle East oil embargo, the SPR
contains 635 million barrels of crude oil.

Nearly half that supply, however, is scheduled for sale in the coming
decade because of congressional mandates.

Lawmakers have used the reserve to offset the cost of legislation like the
2015 highway bill or a health care research effort.

Actually, there are two Muni employees on board. A gripman and a conductor. You
need a conductor to handle the fares of people who get on between the ends of
the lines.

When I lived there a monthly Muni pass was like $25, meaning you could ride
unlimited times. A single ticket for the touristas was like $3-$4, if I recall.
I rode the cable cars every chance I got. They’re a great way to get around
that part of the city, and the gripmen are pretty entertaining.

I got to talk to them on occasion when things were slow, and the stories they
would tell about the Muni employees that tried to get on as gripmen (they have
an open recruitment internally twice a year) were pretty funny. Realize that
these are Muni employees, the same people who drive city busses. According to
the things I was was told, the washout rate of applicants was pretty high.
Length of service for gripmen is the highest in any division of the Muni, that
is, these are guys and gals who have gotten into this division and stayed for
much of their careers. Lots of physical wear and tear, like torn ligaments,
rotator cup stuff, etc. It’s very, very physical.

And they get the exact same pay as a bus driver.

The cable cars can disengage the cable. The cable never stops but the cars do.
I was on the cable car once when a lady in a Land Rover kept getting in our
lane. The gripman was ringing the bell like crazy, I remember he called out
"You're making my day lady!" Its hard work starting and stopping the
machine. Finally she had the ass end of her car in our lane and he just bumped
her out of the way. The cable cars are kind of armored on the corners, probably
for that kind of event.

Doesn't it smell awful all the time? That's my memory of the el in
Chicago -- a sort of oily electric smell with overtones of stale urine
and sweat. I think I'd take the disinfectant.

Re: [MBZ] crookedest street WUZ Good spots for lunch and dinner in SF

2020-03-11 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
That’s the sucky part of business travel. It’s fun that you get to see all of
this cool stuff, but it sucks that you can’t enjoy it with a friend or family.
I used to think about that a lot when I traveled, as in “The kids would really
like this”, or, "I wish the wife could see this.”

Yeah, business travel is cool in that you get to see a lot of neat stuff, but
it sicks that you’re on your own.

I do not miss it one bit.

Either they stop if they can or you get hit. They have accidents with motor
vehicles pretty regularly from what I recall.

Did you ride a cable car? If not, you missed out on a pretty cool experience.
Especially if if you did the Powell/Mason line, as it has some seriously steep
hills. Riding on the running boards is not for the faint of heart.

Re: [MBZ] UF Students Exposed to coronavirus

2020-03-11 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I’m seeing a mild panic on the part of the County as it considers allowing
remote work. While we have ASAs and VPN concentrators (the hardware that
handles remote connections) that are licensed for thousands of users, but there
has never been a situation where there have been massive amounts of users
attempting to log in remotely, even during events like hurricanes.

If things continue in this direction, it could get ugly for our network team.
Management just suspended all business travel effective immediately, too.

My boss was going on a cruise with his family on Thursday, but they’ve bailed.
They were going with a group of people and some of them backed out. He said the
cruise line refunded their money, no questions asked, and gave them a credit
for a future sailing on top of the refund.

Yeah, Burlington, IA isn’t exactly the vacation capital of the US…I can see why
this has been largely ignored.

Cool, though. Do they still let people drive on it?

I noticed the granite or marble curbs. Tampa used to have polished granite
curbs downtown to keep the gators form being able to climb onto the sidewalks,
or so I’ve been told. Many of the curbstones are still in place.
