Yes.   ACC pushbutton, ACC Air delivery (whatever that is)

I read on a PP forum that unplugging a relay and pluggin it in cured a
problem (Seat adjustment not working, both front seats)   Maybe it is
not unusual tha tpulling the relay and putting it back in cured the problem.

[MBZ] fan temp sensor W124 OM602

2020-03-14 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
with cold engine, the fan temp sensor at the top front of the head has
5,000 ohm resistance.   At 80 to 82ºC coolant temp, it is 600 ohms.

One wire is at 5v. (From terminal 8 of the ACC PBU.)   The other goes to
ground. via ACC air delivery (whatever that is)

At infinity ohms (plug unhooked,) the fans will come on with the key on.

So if the fans come on at higher resistance, the would seem that the
resistance should get higher as the temp gets warmer.   Instead, the
resistance gets lower as the temp gets higher.

not the original number for the 87?

If that number supercedes the original part in 85-9x models, then it
likely is the 134a condensor, while the originals may not have been.
I'll try to look at both cars side by side to see if the condensors look
the same.

I looked at a facelift gasser W124 and it uses the same one, so it appears
they’re using the same condensor across the board no matter what. Hard to say
it’s a parallel flow without seeing it, but I would guess it probably is.

They’re cheap as wine - a Nissens is $131.00 and a Behr is $95.00 both at FCP

Hope that helps.

[MBZ] Ok y’all **it just got real

2020-03-14 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I am not one to get too exercised about this Covid thing but that might have
changed.

Dr. Boy (Villanova, Georgetown University School of Medicine, Brown U resident
Internal Medicine, currently Stanford U Fellow in Pulmonary Critical Care)
called me a little while ago to check in on my situation. He is pretty low key
but no bullsh*t. Tells it straight. And he’s pretty smart if I do say so...

They have several covid patients at the hospital now. They are preparing for an
onslaught of more patients the next week or two. Turning ORs and other spaces
into ICUs right now. The expectation is that his hospital, as well as every
other hospital, will be completely overwhelmed before long.

Apparently this is now happening in Italy and is rolling into other EU
countries though that has not been widely reported. It’s bad. No one believes
what China are reporting though their draconian measures to contain the
contagion *might* have helped lower the fatalities. The view is that it is
really bad there and will likely be so in other places.

The limiting factor will be ventilators to deal with respiratory failure or
compromise. If (and this could be a big if) you get to the hospital, and if
they have room, and there are no ventilators and you need one you will be SOL.
Reality as there is a limited supply of these things and it is not large.

He strongly suggested, even though I am quite healthy, that I severely limit my
interaction with the world. Even being healthy the chances of catching this
and having adverse effects are not trivial given the expected infection rate
and effects. I am situated as to where that would not be too difficult to do,
save some occasional trips to the grocery and Lowe’s and such. I’m working on
my house, getting it ready to sell, so can just focus on that rather than
social intercourse.

I am digesting this but strongly considering revising my view on all this given
I absolutely trust the boy, and this is the first time he has been this serious
about something.

As always, YMMV...

Good stuff, Scott. Thanks!

I noticed the cheapie one I saw was only AC, no heat. I would think that AC
only ones would be less expensive if they’re offered. I don’t need heat.

I can do 120 or 240 - the distribution panel is on the wall where this would be
mounted, so that part is easy. Flower bed on the exterior wall, so no problem
with putting a little precast concrete pad there, either. Only real issue is
that it’s an exterior block wall, so I’ll have to drill/punch through concrete
block for the lines and power. Not a big deal.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Mini-Split

2020-03-14 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
Dan,
That is a good price but you can get a similar new unit from several online
sources for a couple hundred more.
I installed a 9K BTU system (1 ton is 12K BTU) in my outbuilding a couple years
ago and have been happy with it. Mine was brand name "Pioneer" bought from
https://www.highseer.com/ . The details of my outdoor unit appear identical to
a Mitsubishi unit so suspect it (and many other brands) is just a relabeled
version of a big name Asian product.
Install is not hard, especially if you mount the outdoor unit on the ground and
you have a concrete block or standard 16 or 24 inch stud wall (neither the case
where I had to install mine).
These come in 110v and 220v so consider the available power at your location.
There are high efficiency units with one orifice and one electronic expansion
valve and higher efficiency units with two expansion valves (like 18 vs 22
SEER). Heating efficiency doesn't vary much.
Unlike a standard AC/heat pump, getting a unit that is "too big" is less of a
problem because the compressor and blower will run slower to match lower
heating/cooling needs.
You will probably need to trim (shorten) the refrigerant line set and you'll
want a good flare tool for this; cheapie tools will leak. Mine came with a
tiny tune of stuff (sealant) to put on the flare connections and mine never
leaked at those connections.
You can get prefab plastic cover kits for the exposed outside refrigerant
lines, wires and condensate drain. Worthwhile IMO for UV protection if nothing
else.
Once everything is connected it's best to run a leak test with dry nitrogen but
that requires a N2 bottle and regulator plus hose. Then you'll need a vacuum
pump to suck out the air/N2 and water vapor before releasing the refrigerant
(that's stored in the outdoor unit) into the system. You may need to
add/remove refrigerant if your lines are much shorter or longer than standard.
By the way, these things come with a 5/16 in (not 1/4) service fitting.
Only at this point (installed, charged, and powered) will you know if it
actually works or not. That's why I think warranty is important. Some systems
must be installed by a licensed HVAC person for the warranty to be valid. IMO,
it's worth hiring a local HVAC guy to make final connections and do startup
unless you happen to have all the required tools.
Unlike normal split AC/heat pumps, in a mini-split both the liquid (small) and
vapor (big) lines must be insulated. All the expansion valves (and other
controls) are in the outdoor unit. Unlike a standard split AC system, the
pressure is the same in both (liquid and vapor) lines because the expansion
valve is in the outdoor unit. Same during heat cycle.

Looks like Home Despot sells these. Anyone know if they’re any good?

When I looked at it a long time ago it was all the same part number. Since r134
works great in the later cars that came with it I just assumed the part number
was probably superseded way back in the 90s to work with 134.

The R134 condenser will be more efficient than the R12 condenser, so they

The 1991 uses a condensor 124 830 16 70

I looked at a facelift gasser W124 and it uses the same one, so it appears
they’re using the same condensor across the board no matter what. Hard to say
it’s a parallel flow without seeing it, but I would guess it probably is.

They’re cheap as wine - a Nissens is $131.00 and a Behr is $95.00 both at FCP
Euro.

Hope that helps.

I got mine for a W126 from the Klima Works guys, but I don’t think they make
anything for the W124. I don’t recall ever doing a crossflow condensor in a

Can’t hurt to ask them. Maybe the sizes are close on one of the ones they make.

Thank you, Max, for the reply. It turns out I did just what you said and
came back to the computer to post I had found the solution and saw your

The two screws are at the extreme front end of the console box on the
outside corners underneath fuzz, hair, and other cruft so they were
hidden. Once that was out of the way, yes, the screw to remove was
visible and now the ashtray is out.

I put the radio removal tools I got from Floyd's link on Amazon and am

The radio, however, does not want to cooperate.

Even though this wiring diagram says it is for 93 and later, I think it
will work for your car for the aux fan circuits.

Re: [MBZ] OT = On topic 124/OM602 overheating

2020-03-14 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
There are two relays: K9, which operates the high speed function of the aux
fans, and K10 which is for the low speed function (low speed circuit goes
through a big resistor to drop the voltage). K9 is in position C in the
fuse box, K10 is position B in the fuse box.

High speed circuit: Test by jumping the temperature sensor/switch at the
top front of head, makes both fans run in high speed, I think you've
confirmed that this works.

This information is for an '87 diesel, and also works for a '93 diesel, so
I think it will cover your '91 diesel.

Low speed circuit: Signaling side of the relay: Fuse 7 to K10 pin 4. K10
pin 5 goes to S32 (refrigerant pressure switch) which goes to ground.
Powering side of the relay: K10 pin 3 is power from Fuse D. K10 pin 1 goes
to the resister (located by the ABS pump and the reciever/dryer, behind the
left front headlight), then to the fans.

Test for power from Fuse 7 to K10 pin 4 with key on. Test for power from
Fuse D to K10 pin 3 with key on. Test if the resistor is open or 0.2 ohms
(correct value is 0.2 ohms). Test that K10 pin 5 has continuity to one of
the connections as the S32 pressure switch, and test that the other
connector has continuity to ground. Test that there is continuity from the
resistor to the motors.

Order a new t-stat, so that after you get all that straightened out and the
car is still running too hot, you can fix the real problem (I predict)
which is a bad t-stat.

[MBZ] Win XP needed

2020-03-14 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Does anybody have a ISO or something somewhere to download to make a
bootable WIN XP installation disk?  I am attempting to restore an
installation of an Xentry SSD I have on my old system. I am wanting to
move that drive to a different computer but get the BSOD everytime I try
to boot it.  I think its something to do with drivers or something.  One
suggestion was to boot from XP disk, run a few things or try to do a
repair install.  I have not been able to locate my install cd since the
move 5 years ago.

[MBZ] Loosening the horizontal console wood

2020-03-14 Thread Craig via Mercedes
Now I need some help with my 1993 E300D/2.5 Turbo

I want to remove the ashtray.

I have already taken out the two Phillips screws in the upper rear of the
ashtray assembly.

I know I need to slide the horizontal console wood (the one through which
the shift lever pokes) to the rear, but the console "glove" box is over
where the end of the wood is.

On our previous E300D (1990), I could readily access the the aft end of
the wood, remove a screw, and slide the wood backwards. This one does not
seem to have that option.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Craig

Now toss in a grown kid, since the schools are shut down.

I really enjoy the quiet time with SWMBA out of the house. College child will
be here with his other stranded friends from all over the USA, returned to
their homes to prevent contagion on school grounds. I told SWMBA that it would
be a bit too contentious at home loud younglings cavorting, and feet of snow on
the ground, so too cold for me to take a book outside to read.

The impact of spring break trips has hit up north. Fairbanks firefighter
returned to work after vacationing in the lower 48. He fell ill at work and
now the whole shift is out of commission for the next few weeks.

Firemen who responded to the ill chinese cargo pilot in ANC are also out on
containment. Add a few thousand college kids with no place to go coming in
from all over the US into an area the size of Rhode Island.

I would be interested to see how this shakes out nationwide as college dorms
and fraternities empty out, returning possible vectors to their home cities
long before summer job season kicks in, if the economy is even capable of
absorbing the labor, as it lays off and shuts down all the places the kids
would normally work.

Fill out your census forms. That Census enumerator may be spreading disease if
he rings your doorbell

On the schematic, the low speed circuit is easier to follow from fuses
(2) to the fans and ground.   I will start by troubleshooting that
part.   The high speed side gets power from K4/10 and I have not yet
located that device or its function.

Possible points of failure on the high speed side:
no power from K4/10
Bad relay k9
No power to K9 from fuse fuzzy (perhaps 7?)
bad PBU, so K9 does not engage
B10/8 bad
there is also a x11/4 (impulse readout) involved via the PBU but I can't
figure out what it does or how it is involved.

Since there is no low speed fan, if it is made to work properly, it
could restore all functions as they should be.

For sure, you do not have to remove the condenser. IIRC, you also do not
have to remove the radiator. You may have to loosen the mounting clips
and tip it backwards with the condenser.

Re: [MBZ] OT = On topic 124/OM602 overheating

2020-03-14 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

Ok, here is the latest.

Top sensor, 2 pin, at the top of the head, next to 1 pin temp sensor
(coolant exit to radiator)

5,000 ohm resistance, cold between the 2 pins
Blue/white wire: 5 v
brown wire 0 volts

Dryer fan switch
Infinite resistance cold = open circuit
Brown/Blue wire 12v
brown wire  0 volts.

with key on, fans are running with plug on top sensor disconnected. the
dryer fan connectors open or jumped made no difference.

Took loose the rear shroud
took loose the radiator.
Front of radiator/back or condensor are clean.

I do not see any way to take off/take out the front shroud and fans,
other than removing radiator, condensor etc.  Trying to avoid that for now.

Because there is 5 v., not 12v. on the blue/brown wire at the top
sensor, there has to be some other device in the circuit that is
reducing voltage from 12 to 5.Is this the resistor near the dryer?

If anyone can find a wiring diagram, that would be very helpful.

I have replace many viscous clutches, and refilled 3 or 4 others.   This
viscous clutch is ok.   It looks like it may have been replaced when the
radiator was replaced.

I have been looking at the manual on Dave M's site and on the
w124-zone.com site, I don't find any diagnostic for the fan circuits
other than the 83-544 posted earlier for the dryer switch.

As for changing antifreeze,  that has been planned for months for after
everything is working and the shakedown is done.   right now, I want to
get the electric fan controls fixed before I change the antifreeze, so I
am trying to leave the coolant system intact and trying to leave the
refrigerant system intact for now.

If I could get to it, I'd be tempted to cut out the lower part of the
front shroud to allow airflow other than past the electric fans.   But
will run as designed if I can find the problem.   otherwise, the next
fix is to put a manual switch on the fans or wire them to run whenever
the key is on.

[MBZ] Adaptive cruise control

2020-03-14 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I had my first experience with this in a rental Subaru this week.
Actually kind of a neat and perhaps useful feature.  I set the cruise
control after I left the airport in Nashville and it was on the whole 45
minute drive to the airport all the way thru the main part of town.  Car
automatically would speed up and slow down as required, even applied the
brakes when needed.  The only annoying part was if you are on the
highway and a car is way ahead of you, within a certain distance car
will slow down to match their speed.  You are too far away from then to
move to the left lane to pass, so you have to move over early then the
car speeds back up assuming there are no equally slow cars in the left
lane. This could sometimes cause problems if you moved over and it took
a few seconds for the car to speed up and in the mean time some other
car would come up from behind and want to pass.

In my 190e 2.6 it is supposed to come on at 100c or 105c, but not 80c. There is
a resistor mod you can do at the temp sensor connector that can lower it
(assuming they are similarly set up). Dan posted on that years ago when he had

2020-03-14 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
If the engine fan is working and its 75F and its overheating you've got some
other problem(s). The aux fans should be unneeded in those conditions.
I agree that a thermostat would be one of my first things to test. The car has
sat awhile no? I'd probably swap the coolant too.
Angie's Golf had a mystery coolant leak only discovered when my TDI guru used a
pressure tester. Perhaps you're loosing pressure somewhere, a cracked tank
maybe?
I drove 2 different 190Ds with bad fan clutches, those use an electric clutch.
In each case the car was fine as long as it didn't have to sit in heavy
traffic. The second car had a working aux fan so it'd just cycle up to 105F,
the fan would come on and bring it down, then it would cycle back up. The first
car I had to be dammed careful in heavy traffic...

This one is different in that the front of the radiator is blocked by a
front shroud, except for the 2 electric fans.  apparently they are
supposed to run at one speed for normal driving and at a higher speed

That is why I have to find out how to get them to run as they are
supposed to.

One thing the mediaocrats have failed is to hype the fact that those

NOW!The fact that they aren't is yet another indication of the

I’ve had one for about the last month, but I would attribute it to the oak
pollen that blankets the area this time of year. The ML is parked outside, and
it’s got a thick film of yellow dust all over it.
