Re: [MBZ] Strange dizzy issue

2020-04-07 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I have certainly never had anything happen like this before.  It was
very strange in of itself but to have it hit suddenly and full force in
the shop can be downright dangerous.  Lucky I only hit my head on the
SDL.  I had a chainsaw sitting on the floor nearby that I could have hit.

It sounds like it may be benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)

since it seems to affect you when you change your position such as from

However, it could be more serious.

The most common diseases that result in vertigo are benign paroxysmal

positional vertigo (BPPV), Ménière's disease, and labyrinthitis.

Less common causes include stroke, brain tumors, brain injury, multiple

sclerosis, migraines, trauma, and uneven pressures between the middle ears.

IMO Max is right. Be sure and take someone with you if you go.

This morning when I woke up before I got out of bed I felt dizzy.

During the day it seemed to hit me all of the sudden if I turned my head in
a certain direction. Could not really narrow it down by reproducing it on
demand. Otherwise felt fine. Went out to the shop a little while ago and
was under a car. Went I came out from under and just as I stood back up I
was suddenly hit with extreme dizziness and was severely off balance. Ended
up stumbling across the shop and slamming my head into the trunk of a SDL
then hit the ground. After sitting there for a minute I was fine and got
hit with it again as I started to get back up. I manage to get up finally
without getting dizzy and got back into the house. I have never in life
life experienced anything like this before. Head is got a nice goose egg on
it now but does not hurt that bad. Been sitting here figuring if I have
this problem again tomorrow I will go to the doctor. Then I figured what
the heck I will have the wife call the doctors office and see if I can get
in within the next couple of days if for no other reason than to discuss it
with him since this is out of the ordinary. She of course tells them I fell
down and hit my head instead of just keeping it simple to which they then
say to go to ER. I’m not going to the ER so I guess if I die I die. Took my
blood pressure which was a little high but not out of the ordinary for me
for before I take my daily blood pressure pill.

Allow me to translate CL-speak: "A/C needs recharged" means it hasn't
worked in a while and likely needs major work such as a new compressor,
evap, condensor, hoses, or all of the above. If all it really needed was
a recharge, the seller would have done that.

My plan is to either turn it over to my buddy the BBQ cook (The Butt Stops
Here BBQ, Swanzy, NH) or to filet out the breasts and put the legs wings and
thighs into the dutch oven with a pound of venison sausage and give it 3 hours.
The folks that have been to ChowdaQ can tell you what my dutch oven does to
tough meat...

I would imagine grilling yields shoe leather.

That was the conclusion I came too. It seems worse when I am laying down. For a

Lay down in the driveway to check out something under the wagon and when I was
laying on my side I felt it come on a little. Did not have any trouble when I
got back up. Will see what tomorrow brings. If I die I will all of my cars to
Poos with the responsibility to get them all going and sold.

How much of a project do you want?

Current issues:
3 burned out window regulators - Driver door, passenger door, passenger
back door
- Does not need current attention if you don't want to
open the windows, which, in Arizona with summer coming
you likely won't want to do
Sunroof only opens 7 inches
- Same as above
Ball joints in steering assembly beginning to weather and leak,
will need to be replaced
- Will need a fair amount of work in the not-too-distant future
Brake discs beginning to pit.
- Brake disks pitted? That's a new one. Scored, yes, but pitted?
A/C needs to be recharged
- Now that will need to be addressed soon. If a recharge is really
all it needs, find, but ...
ODO stuck at 258xxx
- I wonder how many miles it is behind.

It sounds like it may be benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) since it
seems to affect you when you change your position such as from lying down
(under the car) and then standing up.

[MBZ] ***SPAM*** RE: Strange dizzy issue

2020-04-07 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
I had a similar experience. It was during the time I was on loan to the USCG
about 12 years ago. They sent me to a training course at the JITAP in San
Diego. I was staying at the BOQ, woke up and had no sense of balance at all. I
had to hold on to the wall to get to the bathroom. It passed in about 1/2 hour,
and never repeated since.

My theory is that some little things in my inner ear caused a temporary
problem, which would only have been serious if it caused an accident. I have
heard similar stories from other people.

This morning when I woke up before I got out of bed I felt dizzy. During the
day it seemed to hit me all of the sudden if I turned my head in a certain
direction. Could not really narrow it down by reproducing it on demand.
Otherwise felt fine. Went out to the shop a little while ago and was under a
car. Went I came out from under and just as I stood back up I was suddenly hit
with extreme dizziness and was severely off balance. Ended up stumbling across
the shop and slamming my head into the trunk of a SDL then hit the ground.
After sitting there for a minute I was fine and got hit with it again as I
started to get back up. I manage to get up finally without getting dizzy and
got back into the house. I have never in life life experienced anything like
this before. Head is got a nice goose egg on it now but does not hurt that bad.
Been sitting here figuring if I have this problem again tomorrow I will go to
the doctor. Then I figured what the heck I will have the wife call the doctors
office and see if I can get in within the next couple of days if for no other
reason than to discuss it with him since this is out of the ordinary. She of
course tells them I fell down and hit my head instead of just keeping it simple
to which they then say to go to ER. I’m not going to the ER so I guess if I die
I die. Took my blood pressure which was a little high but not out of the
ordinary for me for before I take my daily blood pressure pill.

Re: [MBZ] Strange dizzy issue

2020-04-07 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I had it first thing in the morning then a few times depending on the position
of my head. It sounds a lot like this

https://www.health.harvard.edu/diseases-and-conditions/what-causes-my-sudden-dizziness-when-i-move

Came on suddenly today. Might have something plugged up in my ears but they
seem fine. This in turn led to the falling and hitting my head. I don’t have
any sort of concussion symptoms but if some develop I guess I will go. The
reason I was out in the shop was I was needing to see if I had a torx bit that
could access and remove a bolt for the drier/receiver on a 211 which turns out
I need one or the long sockets to be able to get to it due to the way the lines
are in the way. Was then going to have to go to HF to get a set. I guess I
probably should not be driving.

Wild game requires different types of preparation than Butterballs!

My experienced turkey hunting partners were filleting out the breasts and
discarding the tough legs and thighs. NO, no, no! Braise them with plenty of
umami ingredients, and cook until tender. The flavor is fabulous.

I would imagine grilling yields shoe leather.

That’s pretty cool.

I do miss all the wildlife we had in our neighborhood when we lived in WI.
Deer, foxes, skunks, turkeys, badgers, etc. The first house we owned up there
backed onto a nature preserve, and all sorts of stuff would wander into the
back yard on a regular basis.

One year the inlaws were up for Thanksgiving. I hear all sorts of commotion
while I'm getting dressed in our bedroom. I run out to see what’s going on and
my father in law is yelling at the mother in law to go and get my shotgun.

There were two wild turkeys that had walked into the back yard from the
trailhead that ended at our property line. You could have walked out on our
deck and been about 20 feet from them.

My doc said one attacked his truck last year.  It was upset!

Coupla years ago I had 3 toms hanging around the house in the woods, I'd
hear them gobbling around in the mornings mostly.  I'd walk up the
driveway to get the paper and one would be hanging in the driveway and
really be interested in giving way but it finally move over 10-15ft.
One day I was out loading a log onto the trailer, pulling it with a
come-along.  Every time I would crank on it it would screech and in the
woods I would hear "gobblegobble."  It was pretty funny.  I let this boy
who works for the power company hunt on the property for deer, he had
called about turkeys, I told him these were around, come on out.  Next
morning he comes early and put a tom decoy out and plunked himself down
about 20ft from it then called.  One of them came and attacked the decoy
and he got it.  His buddy was over the other side of the property and
didn't get one, I guess they ran off, but they came back the next

I have flocks (or whatever they are called) come through occasionally

All no doubt true, but again, what I suggested was that it was a
beautiful car that maybe needed something simple. If it did you were a
winner. If it needed something crazy expensive, then you would give it
up and re-sell it cheap or sell some parts and send the balance to the

get your money back. I never suggested you would get paid for your time

The worst part about parting a car is gettin rid of the husk. Once you’ve
removed everything of value, the shell is only valuable as scrap, which

I totally understand what you’re saying, Randy. But from a standpoint of

the time and effort involved to part it out.

I parted out a W140 S500 coupe. Lots and lots of unique parts due to it being a
coupe. Once I sold those off, the rest were pretty common W140 parts. I got
$200 for the rolling chassis. I think I grossed about $1000 when it was all

Parting cars is a fool’s errand unless you have no expectation of a return on
the sales and you have a place to store such cars, like Kaleb.

That’s if you’re an individual, of course. Totally different situation on the
commercial side, of course.

2020-04-07 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
They’re not bad cars, but some models have some real issues that have to be
dealt with that you simply can’t avoid or bodge a fix for, like the air
suspension. For example, if you blow out one of the struts it’s a minimum $500
bill to fix *and* the car is inoperable without the repair. As a result it’s a
model I would leapfrog over to the W211 or stay behind with the W210. Either
one of those have their warts as well, but they’re nowhere near as significant
as the ones the W220 has.

G-d forbid something goes south in the electronics. A SAM module (for the
CANBUS) is a dealer only item that’s north of $1000.

Yeah, that was my point.

I’ve seen the results of wild turkey as a food source, and I wasn’t impressed.
I would just as well get a fresh one from my butcher and let the wild ones run
wild. They’re pretty cool to see in the woods.

Kind of like grouse. Cool to watch, never understood the motivation behind
shooting/eating them.

That’s a pretty astute observation. There are so many cars out there that are
not worth the money to restore, and when people do they’re often so far upside
down that they’ll never recover their costs if they try to sell. If it’s a car
you really like or that has some sort of sentimental value and you’re going to
keep and drive for a long time I can totally understand.

These are the deals one has to be on the lookout for. The failed restorations.

The logistics would negate any deal, Randy. It’s in Bob’s neighborhood,
Phoenix, AZ. A bit of a haul for me. $2k for brakes on this car would have been
highway robbery.

If you had the space and time for $500, maybe. I would want to put it on a DAS

Sure you could do that. I woudn't, I've tried parting out cars and it's
way too much work for what you make and the time it takes. YMMV of
course.

SWMBO wants something larger than the Sprinter chassis ones. We’ve looked at
those and I’d be quite satisfied with one, I’d think, but she wants more room.

I have never successfully shot a turkey. In the past my scouting has been

2020-04-07 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Very nice, thanks for sharing. Reminds me of my grandfather, he was
stationed on USS MORRIS in the Pacific theater, saw lots of action, left
the ship shortly before a kamikaze attack killed most of the officers (my
grandfather was a Lieutenant, his battle station would have been mount
captain for one of the five inch guns). The plane made almost a direct hit
on the Wardroom. Only a few of the officers that were on watch survived.
The kamikaze hit was on April 6, 1945. Looks like MORRIS was also involved
in action near Okinawa at the time, wonder if that was the same engagement
as BUSH?

Anyone have experience with Foretravel Motorhomes? I’m looking at a couple late
90’s models, both very well maintained, to use forgetting out oh Phoenix heat
this summer and for my at least twice yearly trip to cancer doctors in Houston.
These seem to be very well made. And they seem to have a following much like
the way we follow our beloved MBs.

Why? Worst case scenario, if you get it cheap enough, is that you
salvage or sell a few parts and send it to the crusher, or sell it to

Actually I think the reference was to a Super Bee.
The AMC episode included the companies that made up AMC, Nash, Hudson, Eagle. A
little talk about the association with Renault which is hilarious because he
pronounces the 't'.

A good put on the 2 stick transmission, one stick for the regular gears and the
other for overdrive...

"Doesn't start" could be so many things from $ to in cost.

Without knowing a bit more, it's not a risk I would take if they were
giving it away.

[MBZ] OT My uncle

2020-04-07 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Just turned 95 on Saturday. He is the last surviving crew member of the
USS Bush, which was sunk on this (6 April) day In 1945 after taking 3
kamikaze hits during battle off Okinawa in the Pacific in WW2. He
floated around on a raft for quite some time with living and dead crew
mates until being rescued.

He went back to San Francisco and had to be seen by a Navy shrink to
assess his mental condition after the traumatic event. He told the doc
he thought he was OK but might need 30days of leave to be sure. Doc
laughed and signed off so he made his way to KY, arriving at home late
at night after hitchhiking the last little ways from the bus or train or
whatever. He pounded on the door, which opened after a minute, and he
found himself staring at a double barrel 12g. That finally got sorted
but he reckoned he was more scared of my granddaddy at that moment than
he was of the japs when they were trying to kill him.

Anyway, he is still pretty sharp and gets up and works on stuff every
day and is still a total badass.

Bush was operating as radar picket ship
 off Okinawa
6 April 1945 and had splashed
at least one plane when she was hit and subsequently sunk by three
Japanese kamikazes . At 1515,
the first plane hit at the deck level on the starboard side between
number one and two stacks causing its bomb or torpedo to explode in the
forward engine room. Although much damage was sustained the ship was not
believed to be in severe danger and tugs
 were requested. Colhoun
was closing in to
assist when she was hit by a suicide plane and was so severely damaged
that she had to be sunk by United States forces.

At 1725, a second kamikaze crashed into the port side of Bush's main
deck between the stacks, starting a large fire and nearly severing the
ship. At 1745, a third crashed onto the port side just above the main
deck. Some of the ship's ammunition caught fire and began to explode.
Although it was believed that she would break amidships, it was thought
that both halves would be salvageable. However, an unusually heavy swell
rocked the ship, and Bush began to cave in amidships. Other swells
followed, and the ship was abandoned by her 227 survivors just before
she folded and sank. 87 of her crew were lost.

Re: [MBZ] ***SPAM*** RE: Beer virus

2020-04-07 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
My gut had been bothering me for over a week, it was time to resolve the issue.
I had no problem getting in to see my internist the next business day. Pretty
quiet place for the most part. Big geriatric practice, I was surprised it was
so quiet, as usually the place is hopping with old folks.

Got right in, saw the doc, chatted for a minute or two and left with a couple
of scripts. Well, he transmitted them to my local Walgreens, that is. Now I am
going full on nuclear with Cipro and Flagyl! No more gut bacteria or parasites!
Take that!!!

I did that last week because for some reason someone determined I needed a
“visit” to get a prescription refill. Doc asked me a coupla questions then for
another 10min we discussed local issues and whether I had any turkeys on the
vast estate. His family have a large property up the road he hunts on. He
related a story of a turkey that attacked his truck last year when it was in
the throes of high hormonal urges.
