[MBZ] Finally got the filter changed on the 01 e320

I figured out I was in fact using the clic r pliers backwards yesterday. Even 
after I figured it out the damn things did not want to come loose for some 
reason. I manage to get the first one lose and once I did I clamped it and 
loosened several times and it was easy as pie after that. The other 2 I’m not 
sure how I manage to finally get them loose. Once I got the filter changed I 
reclamped then and figured they would pop off easy like the first one. Nope, 
even after being unclamped and reclamped they did not want to come off with 
that tool. I did order a different one from amazon so will see if it works any 
better. If not I will probably just get the $80 tool. Now the car is ready to 
go after new plugs, breather and valve cover reseal, new breather hoses, spring 
perch replacment, new rear brake pads, new fuel filter, diff fluid change.

Timing belts on the 1.8L engines are made of rubber bands that disintegrate on 
a very specific schedule. There was a really nice Jetta for sale locally on FB 
marketplace that I inquired about, as it looked like a really nice and well 
maintained one owner car.

115k and no timing belt change. They are living on the edge. I didn’t bother to 
bring it up.

Trigger Points are NLA.  Those can be rebuilt.  Had my indy do two sets, so I 
had a spare.  The wiring harness fails, the contacts need to get cleaned of

This does make you wonder how long China knew it was spewing out plague 
#Batstirfry.  Probably had set it up with Bill Gates so he had foreknowledge to 
bring to his Plague Planning event last October.  Surprising we were all caught 
flatfooted.

It does make me wonder why the chinese students who lived across the street in 
Seattle were no longer in residence last summer.  The house did not sell, they 
just decamped.  Seemed to have constant flow of fresh faces to the point a 
person could not tell if there were half a dozen or handfuls on site.   They 
were there in June, but gone by August, even the youngest ones.

[MBZ] Oh Herr Doktor Booth

My strange neighbor just brought home a 2001 ish Jetta 1.8, < 100k miles, two 
owner, few service records. He had moseyed over knowing I’m a German car guy 
and felt like he needed to report out to me. He then asked me what I thought he 
would do first to it to be sure everything is okay. I found myself 
automatically speaking to him as if I was reading a Herr Doctor Booth post 
telling him to change ALL the FUSES and systematically replace ALL the FLUIDS 
with the CORRECT MB (well, VW in this case) FLUIDS. 
What sticks in your heads about Herr Doktor? For me it’s fuses, fluids 
(clearly), allowing a diesel to come to NOP each time it’s started and drive it 
like you stole it...all though he said it more eloquently that I just typed it.

Garbage fuel.  The seller is pretty spot on that fuel system needs going over.  
Filter is probably good, same with fuel pump.  Fuel lines will want replace if 
any alcohol fuel has been used.  I get misfires using pump fuel, but alcohol 
free fuel causes no issues at all.

Might have issues with the injectors leaking or not spraying well.  That was 
another trouble I rectified in my SL.  Costly, but it avoided an engine fire to 
get the perished rubber gone.  

Seller says the thing ran well last summer.  Nobody messed with EFI which would 
be the big no-no for Djet.  Leaving MAP and the intake temp sensor as possible 
failure points.  Those can impact running, but not as much as garbage fuel does.

Looks like a decent project car that runs for a fair price.  There could be 
many more troubles that want addressing, not disclosed.  Not a fan of blue on 
blue.  On a sunny day up north it would be a great top down joy ride

Someone told me once (I believe) that the breathalyzer people generally dislike 
putting their blowers in older diesel vehicles cause there is something 
additional they must do on account or the glow circuit..

There is even a small airstrip on the property so people could fly in.

Amazing place. I love that part of the coast. I did a bunch of work at a USAF 
radar site in the mountains outside of Atascadero. When I was there I drove 
down to the coast just for the views at any time of the day when I could. When 
there wasn’t coastal fog, you could see for hundreds of miles in all directions 
from the site, located at Black Mountain in the coastal range. Some days you 
could see well into the Sierras and out over the ocean, depending on which 
direction you turned.

My first car (9 year old 1975 Honda) had belts that wouldn't retract and
didn't like to extend.
I took the reels apart as far as was reasonable, cleaned years worth of
grime out of them, cleaned and freed up the swinging inertia weights, and
they worked like new. I think the main problem with extending the belts
was the weights not hanging straight down in the center at rest. I assume
a W210 has an entirely different design, but gummed up and sticky can
probably apply to any belt reel.

[MBZ] Seatbelt sticking

Passenger seatbelt on the $600E320 just started hanging up, feels like 
the inertia reel is sticking.  Jiggling the belt while pulling a bit out 
will eventually get it pulled out enough to use.  Looks like a PITA to 
get at it and try to figure out why it decided to quite working 
properly.  What might have caused that?

They go in the lower part of the dizzy and operate the fuel injection nozzles.

I’ve been advocating to myself and my family and friends for months to wear 
masks and gloves despite the early advice against it and I’ve been taking 
extraordinary measures even as early as the beginning of February which 
included sanitizing the exterior door handles of my home. Our deified Fauci 
suggested on February 29th, that we didn’t need to change any of our behaviors 
at the time. Typical academic with no street smarts living with his head up his 
ass.

Biggest problem with D-Jet is worn distributot and oil on the trigger points, 
which are no longer available.  Bad trigger points equals no injection.

Vacuum leaks are a huge issue as well, some easy to fix and some not so easy.
