Re: [MBZ] VPN, not political

2020-07-11 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
VPNs can and do use port 443, it's a common tactic to "blend in" with
https traffic.

You could try to watch what IP address it's connecting to, and block
that. But that can become a game of whack-a-mole because the provider
probably has more than one IP address.

Probably. You just have to know what port they’re using, or just block
everything outside of 80 and 443 and the usual email (25, 465 and 587) ports. A
lot of VPNs use UDP 500.

VPNs will often use different ports and IP addresses, so it’s really a game of
whack a mole. If you know what VPN client or service he’s using it’s a bit
easier, because most will allow you to get a list of their public IPs and then
you can blacklist them.

Private VPNs make us crazy at work, because we’ll see someone logging in from
Tampa and then five minutes later they’re polling the mail from Las Vegas.
Makes all sorts of alarms go off, so we have instituted a policy of no private
VPN use for connecting to our network.

During the summer it is indeed warm air to be cooled, but in the winter
it is cold air which needs to be heated.

I think Dan said they're in the room return vents.
(in HVAC speak, supply is what comes out of the heating/cooling appliance
and return is what goes into it)

If you see a reduction of dust accumulation in the living area, the dust
is going somewhere.
If the device is downstream of the existing filters it's not going into
the filters.
Therefore the supply duct walls are a likely suspect.

Re: [MBZ] Update on the 606 with possible blown head gasket

2020-07-11 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
I'd not be too upset by that temp idling with the AC on at 95F.

You should be getting the high speed electric fan cycling at that temp though.

Get proper coolant in it soon though -- water will be boiling in the head if
the pressure isn't high enough.

95 seems kind of hot, but not enough to get worried about.
If it was 90 I might not think anything of it.

[MBZ] Update on the 606 with possible blown head gasket

2020-07-11 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
After finally getting all the air out of the system after swapping out the
radiator it still seemed to get hot to me. Today I swapped out the fan clutch
with a new acp (?) one from FCP. Box says Borg Warner. Anyway it seems to be
engaging fine. Let car run for about 20 minutes then let it set idling for
another 20-30 minutes. Photo attached is about where the temp reached and
stayed. It’s 93 out currently. Seems normal to me but now my paranoid self from
reading all the idiotic Fakebook posts about temp has me thinking maybe temp is
too high. AC was running the whole time also. At this point after screwing
around with it the system is just about straight water. Tomorrow I’m probably
going to drain it again then use my new HF vacuum filler to fill it back up
with the proper ratio. I may drive it around for a little bit then if all is
good probably take it off the road for some front end work (after I get my lift
going)

Clocksprings were in use with the W140s as well. They provided connections to
the airbag as well as position indication for the ECU. Don’t ever take one
apart, don’t ask me why.

In my MBZ, clocksprings are for horn and airbag wiring. (clocksprings
often get fried when airbags go off, especially modern clocksprings with a
bunch of horn button controls)

The earliest examples of busy clocksprings in MBZ I can think of are
facelifted W210 and W220, when cruise control moved to buttons on the
wheel.

That is the device that maintains the electrical connections (for the
airbag, horn, and perhaps other controls mounted on the steering wheel)
between the steering wheel and the steering column. I don't think it has a
big clockspring in it, I know it does not for my 124 cars. On my cars, it
has carbon brushes that make the connection with copper rings on the
underside of the steering wheel.

Re: [MBZ] Replacing combination switch E320

2020-07-11 Thread Robert Koziak via Mercedes
I just changed the combination switch on my 2004 E320 because the window wiper
motor stopped working.  It turned out to be a cut wire which apparently
happened to quite a few vehicles.  The new combination switch had a slight
modification.
The steering wheel does have to come off.  I needed a pry bar and a little help
to remove the steering wheel nut when I reached that step.  There are quite a
few videos on Youtube that had very helpful instructions.  One work of caution
is when you reach the removal of the "clockspring"  step be sure to cautiously
keep it in the same exact position.  I thought I did but when reinstalling it
made a clicking noise and the airbag SRS light came on.  I needed to purchase a
new clockspring to complete the job.
Good luck!
Bob
