"It uses a nitrogen air battery that recharges while in flight."

I'd like to see how that this works. Nitrogen gas is all but inert. Many
Nitrogen compounds are, well, unstable.

There are two courses of action in humanity.
Those who plan and execute.
and
Those who react to whatever just happened.

Each individual chooses his own course.

2020-07-16 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Airbus A320 and derivatives have the window seat in the second exit row with
no seat directly in front of it. Glorious spot...When I used to fly Southwest a
lot I made their business select or whatever it was called that always got me
an A 1-15 spot, I snagged that seat frequently...I used to get free drinks
tickets too, usually gave them to the center seat, last row person. Worst seat
on the plane, I figured he/she deserved/earned it.

No seat tray in front of you on a DC-9 or whatever it was called by then

My favorite seat was the emergency exit row over the wing on a 747 -- one row
of seats missing there, infinite leg room.  Wonderful on a trans-Atlanitc

I suspect most road warriors either learn that or get off the road... I
usually stop for a snack before heading to baggage claim, there's no real rush.
I did a class at Tulane University about 10 years ago, the student was an older
lady prof (well Doctorate actually) who picked me up at the airport. We're
waiting for my bag when she declares "Well we'll have a long wait I'm sure, my
bag never comes out first." I'm not kidding when at that very moment the first
bag comes onto the belt and its mine...

Do reinfections tend to be less of a problem than the initial infection,

I sort of like the back due to what you say, but prefer the front due to
getting off the plane first when landing. I have liked bulkheads but sometimes
you can’t stretch your legs as much. If you are the next row or 2 back in the
main cabin you xtra you can stretch your legs up under the seat in front of
you.

Good points. We were taught in an aircraft survival course I took to count seat
backs to each emergency exit in each direction. When the lights are out or the

If it has a jet bridge it's not too bad.

At the local airport here you would be going down stairs and walking

Well, they might be, but it's a risky gamble

My first thought was "Jet? Electric? Huh???" Ducted fan - yes.
Jet - I don't see how it could possibly be.

By strict definition, a jet's thrust is from jet propulsion. I am
not aware of any method of using electricity to generate jet
propulsion.

That said, most subsonic "jet" aircraft engines are turbofans and
generate most of their thrust from the bypass fans driven by a
turbine rather than from jet propulsion - thus making it more of a
ducted fan than a jet.

For supersonic flight, a jet is more effective. And generally a
fighter is required to achieve speeds greater than Mach 2.

And that's just the engine - ignoring the problem of batteries,
weight, and refueling.

Do yourself a favor and buy a scanner -- $150 -- get the 38-pin adapter
cable too.  If you are serious about looking at these newer cars you can
see a lot of stuff in the nannies and decide if the are fatal errors or
old errors or something you can clear and see what the car does.  This

Re: [MBZ] Fwd: 2006 Mercedes 320 CDI

2020-07-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The alert in the display is due to the auxiliary battery (about $50-$100
depending on who you buy it from) and possibly the high current battery relay
being bad. My oldest son’s former E320 CDI has the same issue.

ESP could be any number of things, but if it’s the SBC (brakes) there’s a 25
year warranty on it from Mercedes.

Not a bad deal for what it is. I wonder if it’s got Black Death? Definitely
want to pull the cover off the top of the engine and look.

[MBZ] OT: Britain's next fighter jet?

2020-07-16 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
On the cutting edge of warfare...

Britain's next fighter jet could be powered by batteries

Published: Thursday, July 16, 2020

BAE Systems PLC, the developer of Britain's next fighter jet, said it's
considering powering the planned warplane using alternative propulsion such
as hybrid or fully electric systems.

BAE, which is working with engine-maker Rolls-Royce Holdings PLC and
others, is "examining all options" to power the plane, manufacturing
director Dave Holmes said on a webcast yesterday. The Tempest is due to
join the Royal Air Force fleet from 2035.

"I wouldn't rule anything out," he said. "If you're looking at something
that's going to be in service out to 2050 to 2060 and beyond, all of those
options are very feasible."

Electric flight is still in its infancy. One of the biggest challenges
remains the weight of the batteries required to get anything other than a
very small plane into the air. Rolls-Royce developed a hybrid-electric
commercial-aircraft concept called E-Fan X with European planemaker Airbus
SE, though the project was suspended this year as the coronavirus pandemic
weighed on the sector.

BAE envisions using newer manufacturing techniques such as 3D printing on
the Tempest. It said yesterday it will also work with Williams Advanced
Engineering to adapt battery-management and cooling technologies used in
Formula E race cars. The company, part of Formula 1 supplier Williams Grand
Prix Holdings PLC, aims to deliver energy at lighter weights, according to
its technical director, Paul McNamara.
Drone fleet

Technology has transformed aerial warfare since the Tempest's predecessor,
the Typhoon, first came into service in the early 2000s. While plans are
fluid, the U.K.'s Ministry of Defence has said it's looking at designs for
unmanned drones that can fly alongside fighters like the Tempest.

Drones have helped to speed electrification, though battery power is
usually used on smaller craft requiring stealth. Larger ones typically have
conventional turbofan engines.

The E-Fan X demonstrator replaced one of four jet engines with an electric
motor and has a high power battery pack to provide energy storage.

Airbus is working on a French-German rival to the British Tempest project
with Dassault Aviation SA. The European planemaker has said its next
narrow-body commercial aircraft, also targeted for the mid-2030s, will use
alternative power.

BAE, which is also working with Italy's Leonardo SpA and missile maker
MBDA, said it's not focused on the competition but on meeting its own
goals, and continues active discussions with other potential partners.

Sweden's Saab AB signed a memorandum of understanding to join the Tempest
project last July. *— Charlotte Ryan, Bloomberg*
