Re: [MBZ] Another way to get rid of those funky smells in your car

Angie got me a boot dryer for Christmas. It's got an odor reducing option which
is apparently an ozone generator. I used it in the pickup this spring after I
fixed the water ingress issue. Worked pretty well.

The drive train on the Pinto was excellent. Body was, well, 70's whacko
styling and poorly made. If the fashion of copying Japanese styling had been
then instead of now, Ford might have made a decent car.

Ugly styling, with uncomfortable seating and deadly gas tank (saved money by
leaving the originally designed shield out!) but mechanically quite good.

Re: [MBZ] Hey, You Screwed Up -

2020-09-11 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Dad, having recently left GM in late 1969, no longer had access to program cars
for execs that my long suffering Mom got. Things like Opel Kadettes and
Vauxhall wagons. Dad finally had to break down and buy Mom a car. It was a
1970-1/2 Pinto in bright orange (Mom like bright colors) two door fastback with
the large rear window. Later in production they shortened the rear window on
the hatch to about 1/2 of the area to make it more “trunk-like".

It was bare bones with a heater, AM radio and a four speed stick. Mom thrashed
that car, like every car she drove. In 1976, my brother got it. He didn’t have
it long, and while doing so drove it into a 12” high concrete curb in downtown
Indianapolis one night after a long evening of imbibing. He passed it to me
shortly after, declaring it to be in “fine” shape.

I started driving it in late 1978, if I recall correctly. That’s when I
discovered that the frame was tweaked courtesy of my brother’s shenanigans,
verified by it eating a set of front tires in about 10k miles and a close look
on a frame rack at our local bodyshop, Church Brothers. Brother ponied up the
$$ to straighten it out, and after that it was fine.

I probably drove it until 1980 or so when I sold it in the “Trader”, a local
weekly classified ad paper.

Much of the time I owned it I was a starving student (college, then tech
school) so it served me well. It was a reliable car and really easy to work on.
I owned it when the gas tank recall was going on, and Ford jerked me around on
that so much that they ended up paying my wages for a day and giving me a
loaner (unheard of at the time) so they could have the car to address the
recall.

M7 87 is well past 400k now. Haven't driven it this year, need to bleed the
brakes and change the tranny juice and filter on the off chance that will fix
the failure to shift into first as stop signs (more likely it needs a rebuild).

88 300TE is nearly virgin at 270k, but my mom drove it minimal miles for a

Re: [MBZ] Hey, You Screwed Up -

2020-09-11 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I did this with one of those big hardened star drivers when torquing the head
bolts on the 2000cc four cylinder in my 1970 Pinto. Was reaching around trying
to get into one of the head bolts near the rear, thought it was seated, let go
and “tink-tink-tink” as it fell down the oil drain hole at the back of the head.

Talk about panic!

Went to Sears (this was in 1978) and got a magnet on telescoping handle. Fished
that bad boy out of the hole, thank goodness.

“MR Magnet” as it’s known gets a special place in the tool box drawer and has
saved my butt on more than one occasion. One of the best tools I’ve ever owned.

Re: [MBZ] Hey, You Screwed Up -

2020-09-11 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Guy I used to know had a piston paperweight, it had multiple deep imprints
of a screw or nut or something. The damage was found when the engine (some
American muscle car) was rebuilt for other reasons, he thought it was
pretty funny how such damage was unknown and not suspected until they took
it apart.

Once I dropped a nut down the oil drain return (from the head into the oil
pan) on a '90 Honda Accord. I panicked, felt sick, was just beating myself
up. Talked to a mechanic about how to pull the oil pan, he laughed, then
he loaned me a magnetic retrieval tool, I stuck that down the oil drain and
'click' the nut came right back out. Whew! Turns out it only made it a
few inches down the drain. Since then I'm very careful to plug up such
holes with rags or paper towels.

My '87 300TD (The White Whale) is coming up on 399k miles, I've put on
about 120k of those. Going to keep her going past 400k but the rust and
water intrusion is driving me pretty crazy. I've owned this car for about
12 years now. Engine and transmission are very strong but she does use
about a quart of oil every 1500 miles or so.

[MBZ] OT Proclamation on Patriot Day, 2020

2020-09-11 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
In 2001, our Nation, united under God, made an unbreakable promise never
to forget the nearly 3,000 innocent Americans who were senselessly killed
on September 11. On this sacred day — Patriot Day — we solemnly honor that
commitment. As the bells toll, we call by name those who perished in the
terrorist attacks in New York, New York; Arlington, Virginia; and
Shanksville, Pennsylvania. In cities and towns across our great country,
we stand in solidarity to remember the victims and mourn their stolen hopes
and dreams.

On a day that began as ordinary as any other, terrorists carrying out a
sadistic plan murdered thousands of our fellow compatriots. With shock and
disbelief, we watched our first responders, encumbered by heavy equipment
and hindered by debris and smoke, rush with conviction and courage into the
void to rescue those in despair. With pride and sorrow, we felt the
tremendous bravery of those aboard Flight 93, who summoned the courage to
charge the terrorists in a counterattack that saved countless American
lives. As the day closed, America steadied its resolve to hold accountable
those who had attacked us and to ensure it would never happen again.

The courage, heroism, and resilience Americans displayed on 9/11, and in
its aftermath, are perpetual testaments to the spirit of our country.
While our Nation was anguished by this attack, the grit displayed that day
— the very essence of America — was a reminder that our citizens have never
failed to rise to the occasion. Heroes sprang into action in the face of
great peril to help save their fellow Americans. Many laid down their
lives. As we reflect on the events of that September morning, let us
recommit to embrace the stalwart bravery displayed and reaffirm our
dedication to defending liberty from all who wish to deny it.

To fulfill our collective promise never to forget, we impart the memory of
that fateful day to our children and grandchildren. The smoke that rose
from the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and the Pennsylvania field carried away
the souls of innocent Americans. As we recall the images of our American
Flag raised from the ashes of Ground Zero and the Pentagon, we are reminded
that good triumphs over evil. We recommit ourselves to fortifying our
cherished American values so that future generations will know in their
souls that the United States is the land of the free and the home of the
brave.

This Patriot Day, we commemorate the lives of those who perished on
September 11, 2001, we pray for the families who carry on their legacies,
and we honor the unmatched bravery of our Nation’s first responders. We
also commend those who, in the days and years following the attack,
answered the call to serve our country and continue to risk their lives in
defense of the matchless blessings of freedom.

By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107-89), the
Congress designated September 11 of each year as “Patriot Day.”

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of
America, do hereby proclaim September 11, 2020, as Patriot Day. I call
upon all departments, agencies, and instrumentalities of the United States
to display the flag of the United States at half-staff on Patriot Day in
honor of the innocent people who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
I invite the Governors of the United States and its Territories and
interested organizations and individuals to join in this observance. I
call upon the people of the United States to participate in community
service in honor of the innocent people we lost that day and to observe a
moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time to honor
those victims who perished as a result of the terrorist attacks of
September 11, 2001.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this tenth day of
September, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty, and of the
Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and
forty-fifth.
DONALD J. TRUMP

When the Covid hit, I was exiled from the old Nuke plant to my home office.
Since The end of March, my old W124 has been languishing next to the garage
waiting for the occasional wash and spin around the neighborhood.
Today, my youngest daughter's boo went out to go to work and his motorcycle was
dead. I told him he could take my truck to work. My wife has several

Then I get the calls from HR saying they need my help doing interviews for some

My point is this. My sweet old car has just sat there through the hottest
summer on record for this hell hole. I jump in it this morning, start ‘er up
and take off for my 82 mile round trip to the old Nike plant. This 33 year old
crate still provides the most solid, comfortable, safe, nimble, enjoyable ride
of any of my fleet. I jump on the freeway and begin the drive, driving in the
requisite aggressive fashion to stay clear of the knuckleheads, and all she
wants to do is go 85 - 90 mph.
Nothing comes close. Nothing.

But, I’m preaching to the choir.
