Re: [MBZ] 1998 S420 Engine has a ticking sound that goes away after driving awhile

2020-11-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Little to none, I suspect, with maybe some accelerated wear on the lifter faces
and cam lobes. There’s not enough oil flowing at idle to overcome the lack of
restriction when the end caps are blown out of the tubes, but once you get
moving things are better. I wouldn’t leave it that way for an extended period,
though.

I did a writeup of the job on my SL500 in the R129 forum on Benz World if you
want to see what’s involved. It’s not a difficult job to do, and while you’re
in there you can replace the timing chain upper guides, too, as they’re cheap
and they have to come off anyway.

Here’s the old ham operator’s page covering the job:

https://www.k6jrf.com/MB_lifter.html

He mentions replacing the breather tubes while you’re there, mainly because
they’ll be hard as a rock and will break or shatter. The whole set of breather
tubes are around $150 from the dealer, I think. I have a list of all the parts
for my R129 and E420, but they may be a little different for your car.

Re: [MBZ] front/rear axle gear lubes

2020-11-18 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
 Don,
To answer your question about using the Harbor Freight pump to move
gasoline, or fuel.
I routinely use mine to pump diesel and gas at the ranch.
Obviously, you need to observe good safety while doing it with gas... with
diesel, not nearly as likely to touch off a fire, but still possible. ie,
don't spray fuel and atomize it, etc..
Wire the pump with a shut off switch that is non sparking and away from the
pumping area enough to be unlikely to trigger ignition, etc.. Devise a
method to keep the intake and discharge hoses in their respective
containers. etc.

The pump is rated at 290 gallons per hour, so it comfortably moves 4.8
gallons per minute. The body of the pump portion is stainless steel, the
pump uses nylon floating impellers [I ordered and bought spares 5 years
ago, still haven't needed them]

I like to use semi clear poly hose, with nylon braids in the structure. It
is a little stiffer than plain clear poly hose, which gets sucked flat on
the pickup side [not what you want to happen, it shuts off flow]. Semi
clear hose lets me see the fluid being pumped, so I know it's "working"

Re: [MBZ] OT: Pheasant

2020-11-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
When you're cleaning the bird you should have a pretty good idea if theres any
shot holes. Then feel around in that area, they're usually pretty easy to
find.I did find one steel bb in the fancy duck meal a few weeks ago. I didn't
crunch down on it but could feel it rubbing on a tooth during one bite. I had
to work it around a bit in my mouth to get the pellet out.
I've been really lucky with the pheasants I've been shooting, they've taken the
bulk of the pellets in the head, makes it harder to take a nice picture but
less destruction of meat.

I've got a little battery pump that goes pretty fast. Its a stick with a hose
coming out of it. The snowmobile shop near my house had one for emptying tanks
on new machines, 5 gallons in less than a minute.I don't remember why I bought
mine but its pretty handy. I got it at the hardware store.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Pheasant

2020-11-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The problem most people have with wild duck and goose is they try to cook it
like chicken which results in tough, bad tasting meat.
If we look back at my fancy duck meal from a few weeks ago:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/ULVvaqJiu4Bq4xLL9 notice its just about medium, I was
aiming for medium rare and overshot a little. It was tender and flavorful
without that annoying liver flavor you get in over cooked duck.
I think most people that "don't like wild meat" really just don't know how to
cook wild meat properly. The pheasant I shot Monday got cooked under high heat,
more like a chicken, and although I did over cook it just a little it was still
pretty good.

As an aside I went back out to the pheasant lands today. Its cold (just below
freezing) and windy so I figured there wouldn't be many people out. Yesterday
there were probably a dozen hunters with dogs. Anyway I took my 1890s vintage
"King" double barrel muzzle loading 11ga shotgun and managed to bag a limit:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/eKMeWxx6XKcm54Ka9I loaded with 1 1/2oz of shot and 3
drams of real black powder.

You need to find a better source - I’ve seen complete sets *with* the new OE O
rings for under $150. I’ve got a set on the shelf that I ultrasonically cleaned
and installed new O rings on. I’m holding them in reserve for the E420 if it
ever needs them or I feel like changing valve cover seals and have the engine

Needs to have the valve oil feed tubes replaced, about $20 each times
16.
Or you can find a set from one of the early engines that didn't have
self destructing plastic oil tubes (the end plug falls out because it
was not cast in one piece)

and she went to start it and the ignition switch (which was mounted down
on the console behind the shifter, or somewhere in there, falls out of

so it just let go.  I crawled down under the car and managed to push it
back up through the hole and she tied something onto it to hold it up

Coil packs on these V12s are notoriously expensive, as they’re an “all in one”
setup where if one goes you have to replace the whole assembly that consists of
six coil packs.

Re: [MBZ] front/rear axle gear lubes

2020-11-18 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Some years ago, I solved the problem of oil in odd places with a small
electric 12 volt pump, a length of low voltage lighting wire and battery
clamps with a switch wired in at the pump. I have used it to evacuate oil
and to refill both.
Totally makes it an easy job, and once you own one, it's painless.
Harbor Freight sells one that works nicely. Their price went up when they
started carrying a better quality pump, but still worth it as a "Keeper
tool". You will need to buy some plumbing fittings and a supply of
different size poly hose in bulk to make it truly versatile.

I’ve used the cow inseminator pump for doing differentials for years, and it’s
always a mess despite being able to fill a differential in about three uses due
to the volume it can handle. When I went to the little pump that screws on the
container it was so, so much easier, especially from a mess standpoint. Yes,
it’s more labor as far as pumping, but it’s amazingly mess free.

(current ATF spec). It’s a difference of 7.0 for 236.14 and 8.5 with 236.10.

I’ve been looking at this closely, as I’m changing the fluid in the E320 4Matic
and the spec called out is 236.10. The Mobil 1 ATF meets this spec.

I am going to change the lubes in the axle diffs on the 163 ML and 211 E, looks
like MB specify for the ML (I did not look up the E, I suppose it is the same):

Rear Axle SAE 90, 85W90

Front Axle SAE 90

I see 75W90 (Mobil1 Synth, etc.) and 80W90 and some other stuff, but no straight 90. I
guess I could find some MB fluid for 3X what this stuff costs but I wonder if the 75W90
would be OK. I put that in the rear diff on the 210 E300, I think that was the spec for
it. I have a bottle or two in the garage, I can buy more easy enough. Some of the
purists say "use the MB fluid!" and others say it is fine, I am leaning to the
latter as this stuff is probably better than whatever was specced out 15 yr ago.

The transfer case uses the same transmission fluid (well, 236.14 spec
transmission, 236.10 transfer case, Valvoline MaxLife meets both specs) so I'm
good on that.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Pheasant

2020-11-18 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
My FIL used to go to the Eastern Shore every winter and hunt canada
geese (although I think it was more an excuse to get out with the boys
for a few days and drink whisky).  He would bring home 6 or 8 cleaned
and frozen.  MIL would marinate it for a coupla days and cook it up, he
thought it was great but I found it was like eating an old shoe, tough
dry and chewy and not particularly tasty.  He gave us one once, I
brought it home and cooked it and it was pretty awful.  Plus you had to
make sure not to crunch down on a piece of lead shot and break a tooth.

Angie told me I can bring as many of those home as I want.

Yes, my thoughts too! Beautiful bird. (But probably rather tasty too,

and if they put 40,000 out there is no real shortage)

The state of MA supposedly stocks 40,000 pheasants into the wild every year.
They publish an interactive map to show you where and how often (but not which
days) they stock. I figured this was my year to go get some.
On the way home from deer camp I grabbed my grandfather's Remington model 31
pump shotgun. Its a 16ga and I already had some shells (good because all the
ammunition is sold out) so I took it. I like carrying that gun, its nice and
light so its easy to keep ready.
I'd been out once already early in the season but the spot I had picked was
crawling with hunters so this time I chose a less accessible spot. Pulled up to
park and there was a bird waiting in the road. This presents a problem since
that bird will probably fly before I get close enough. Fortunately there was
another, even stupider bird which hung around a second too
long.https://photos.app.goo.gl/kZ14QLryRDrLSabZ6
There were at least 3 more birds, I should have gotten one of them but held off
for a better shot. I should know better and just take the shot that presents
itself. Its kind of amazing how they can disappear into the bush. That one ran
behind a tree and was just gone...
