I think that's still the treatment. Two of my boys had it, one brought
it home from school at Thanksgiving break, the other presumably got it
from him. They tested positive for COVID but had mild cases, worst of it
was a sore throat that felt like strep for a couple of days.

I have been supplementing Vitamin D, C, and Zinc since March, for
whatever that has been worth, I never developed any symptoms. We didn't
take any particular precautions in the house, though the sick ones spent
most of their time in their rooms.

I still suspect I may have had it back in late January. I came down with
a weird cough that lasted about a week. A fair number of international
students including Chinese work in my office, and no doubt some had been
home during the Christmas break.

Took it to a price check scanner and it was going for shelf price.

Re: [MBZ] Replacement battery 2014 GLK 250 Bluetec

2020-12-18 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
Hint: If you buy a Walmart battery, but it online for in-store pickup.
Last time I got one I saw a good price online and just went to the store to
pick one up. When they "rang it up" the cost was almost double the online
price. If I had had any sense I would have cancelled that sale, ordered one
on my cell phone, and then walked to the pickup area. Lesson learned.

This seems like a deal, if you can find one in stock and if it has the right

I lost several HS classmates to Vietnam. I missed going due to Nixon's
first draft lottery where I drew 324. My best friend at the time drew 24.
He stayed in ROTC and let the Army send him to medical school, I dropped
out of ROTC and stopped cutting my hair and shaving.

Agreed. As I mentioned, I had some school buddies who’s older brothers were
over there, and when they came back some of them were pretty messed up. I
worked for one of them when I pumped gas a few months in high school, and this
guy was a real hum dinger. He couldn’t handle stress at all. We weren’t allowed
to have more than a certain amount of cash on us at any time, so if you
collected a number of sales and were over the limit you were supposed to make a
drop in the safe. During rush hour he would get so worked up about having to
make drops after nearly every sale that he would end up going into the office
and locking himself in there so he could calm down. We would be pumping gas and
not able to make change in some instances because we would need to get change
from him.

One of my best friends is a Vietnam vet. He was a photographer for the Army,
and while he saw some action he wasn’t in the really nasty stuff according to
him. Good guy, pretty stable from what I’ve seen over 20 some years, but he’s
got some personality traits that I suspect are either a result of his service

Re: [MBZ] OT - The Vietnam War Series by Ken Burns

2020-12-18 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
The French bailed on Viet Nam because holding on to a plantation colony wasn't
worth the money, effort, or dead soldiers. The Viet Cong were probably the
best army in the world, having been in combat (and winning) since the 1920's
fighting off the Chinese under several governments and the Japanese during
WWII. Chinese expansion has stopped in Viet Nam multiple times over the
centuries of recorded history.

Incidentally, Uncle Ho became a communist in the 1920's after he was bodily
thrown down the front stairs of the League Of Nations for having the temerity
to ask when Viet Nam was going to become an independent country (as it had been
for the previous several centuries). Like Mahatma Ghandi, he started out as a
conservative government trainee and was radicalized by the right wingers of the
time.

Re: [MBZ] Faux Tucker for a fraction of the cost

2020-12-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
A high school buddy used to be a “junior” curator at the 500 Speedway museum.
He talked about how they were really picky about donations of cars, no matter
what they were, because they almost always came with some sort of demands or
requirements from the owner. Things like how they would be displayed, whether
or not the museum could sell them in the future, etc., etc. He said that in
some cases when they accepted donations of multiple vehicles it could get
dicey, because some could be real clunkers requiring substantial restoration
($$$) that weren’t of much value or interest to the collection.

He’s not there any more, which is too bad, as he would be a good resource for
the ones they’ve been actively auctioning off some of the collection from the
“vault” (their underground storage garage that’s not part of the public view)
on BaT of late. Too many cars, not enough space, storing and maintaining them
costs money and takes away from the restoration and maintenance of cars that
are more closely related to the subject of the museum.

Here in MI, got almost an inch of dry powder a couple of days ago.
My driveway is snow covered and hard underneath, but yesterday the dirt

And when it’s sunny and clear up there this time of year, the sky is so blue

Re: [MBZ] Battery desulfator

2020-12-18 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Well I'm not sure that going bigger than 2A is going to decrease the 'cure'
time. When I was looking at these, I thought that the magic was in the
voltage spike / harmonics, not the current rating.

I also read an article from a guy who seemed to be very knowledgeable on
battery chemistry and his recommendation was a "rebalancing" process to fix
a weak / dead battery, whereby he basically would over-charge the battery
for some limited period of time, and then test and fix the electrolyte
levels and water levels.

The same battery is good for 70-100 miles (when new) in the Spark, but
those are all four-six years old now. And you have to drive a Korean

[MBZ] Battery desulfator

2020-12-18 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I presume that idea of these things is to take an old dead battery and
resurrect it by cleaning off the sulfur gunk off the plates?  I got
plenty of test subjects sitting around.

I see this 1A model for
https://www.amazon.com/NOCO-GENIUS1-Fully-Automatic-Temperature-Compensation/dp/B07W46BX31
for $29.50 and a 2A for $54, 5A for $65.  I guess the idea is to put it
on a battery and leave it for some extended period while it does its
magic?  So the smaller one will just take longer to work?

A Volt is a Cruze with a non-turbo engine and a fair sized battery and
some minor aero improvements.

I know a couple of guys who switched from Cruze to Volt and loved it,
but I keep coming back to the fact that the Volt is about 500lb heavier
and noticeably slower, combined with the fact that I could never make up
the difference in purchase price on fuel savings. But they're thrilled

At least it allows normal people (under 50 miles per day) to drive an

Which reminds me, we need to start shopping for batteries for the Pisten
Bully, the ones in it (well for it, they're in my garage) are 6 years old. When
I put them on the charger Wednesday afternoon they took 4a, 24 hours later
they're "done". I should have had them on the desulfator all summer, if they
recover enough to get us through this season I probably will.
I did put each of the ASV batteries on the desfulfator for a month. I dunno if
it helps, they're only like 3 years old.
The PITA thing with the PB is that its a 24v system, more difficult to jump
start. Fortunately it usually starts easy.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Interesting Satellite Tech

2020-12-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
It predates drones. There have been third party services that use Google Earth
and other photo mapping services to look for changes to buildings and property.
They sell the data to municipalities for identifying changes to properties.

The county I lived in Indiana back in 2008-2011 used a survey service for the
property appraiser like this to bust people for improvements to their property.
I had a neighbor who put up a garden shed and within about three months they
got a notice of reassessment. I believe they also got busted for not getting a
permit, too. Of course, someone for the county could have taken notice or a
neighbor could have ratted them out, too.

Probably close to a peak value for the 123 wagon though, so if you wanted

The weather guessers claimed it was going to be like 6F last night but its 20F
just before 7am so I don't think it got that cold.
The ASV doesn't have a clutch on the hydraulic system. The machine is hydro
static so the engine just turns a great big hydraulic pump but it has to turn
it all the time so when its cold out and all the oil is thick it starts mighty
hard...

It was sort of a running joke that Dad would outlive us all. He came from a
mix of very hearty and very prone to heart disease stock. Had he taken after
his mother’s side, he would have died before retirement. As it was, his
father’s genetics tended toward outliving your mental capabilities. So, he
muddled through massive coronary issues and other health trouble from Viet Nam
toxics.

What did him in was not the cancer, but the imbecile chinese breast cancer gal
who had no clue how to handle gerontologic patients. Complete medical
incompetence that garnered the attention of the hospital and oncology
departments, which chastised her. That was four months into neglecting to
implement common standards of care in his treatment.

Mom is still going strong at 91. Out in the rain pulling weeds in her garden
this past week.
