Re: [MBZ] now S600

2021-03-10 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
FT,
Thanks for the words of wisdom and guidance re the S600. This is an elegant
car, even if it is 26 years old.
That draws me to it..
The unbelievable electrical nannies push me away with equal force. The guy
that presently owns it owns a pretty successful repair shop, and he parked
it 3 years ago rather than get into it.. overwhelmed him, I think.
My plate is pretty full as it is, I question my choice to even consider it,
at this early point.
Then, if there was / is a quick magic fix.. it might be an enjoyable car to
cruise.

96 and later are the ones to go for.

Yeah I know.

My cousin had one of those my uncle bought her after high school.  It
was white with blue, a pretty little car.  I recall he bought it for a
few $100, she drove it awhile and sold it for next to nothing, this
would have been late 60s early 70s I guess. She still laments having
sold it, it was in decent condition.

[MBZ] now S600

2021-03-10 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
h. First thing I would look at is the wiring (like my 95SL600) that
features the biodegradable insulation.  My guess is that is the likely
culprit, shorting wires, but the coil packs (all one assembly, ) can
go bad.  The throttle body actuators (electronic controllers, one master
one slave, can be rebuilt, some Russian guy does them) go flaky too but
that wouldn't be a "miss."  The wiring harnesses can be rebuilt if you
have the inclination, or there are used ones around.

The distributors (there are 2, one for each bank) get funky too. Not a
hard or expensive fix but another easy thing to check.

See if you can get it cheap, might not be anything too difficult to
resolve, and the M120 is VERY entertaining!  The engine itself is solid,
the electronics can be wonky.  I wouldn't go more than $1500 if you can
get it started and running, however badly, $1000 if not, recognizing it
could be a money pit. Note too that you will have hydraulic suspension
to deal with, that can be a total PITA.  These are extremely complex
cars and the S class more so than the SL as it has all kinds of tricks
in the interior.

Send pics so I can live vicariously!
