[MBZ] I wasted 5 hours of my life looking at the turd today

2021-05-01 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/481620986604984/

So this popped up last night so I messaged the dude to setup a time to
come look at it today.  I had planned on trying to get it for around
$1500 if it was half way decent.  Upon arrival the location is in a
trailer park, which was the first problem.  When I arrived and walked
up, there was a couple of your text book trailer trash type people
sitting on the porch and and old man out messing with a charger on the
car.  At the same time I notice another guy walking up.  The 2 trailer
trash people started laughing about how we both showed up at the same
time.  They were the ones running the fakebook ads from what I gather.
At this point I start getting a little pissed because I set an
appointment and drove 2 hours to see this car.  I consider it extremely
rude of a seller to have people show up at the same time, especially
when you are traveling for a distance.  The other guy also drove 2 hours
from Kansas, but had no trailer so not sure how he figured he was going
to get the car back home.  Did the trailer trash think we would get into
a bidding war?

Anyway, the seller gets the car started finally and talks about how it
has not been driven since 2009, when it was last tagged. Now on to the
car.  Of course paint is dead, but on the surface appears to be rust
free.  Every single window, door, and body seal is cracked all to hell
and needs to be replaced.  You can literally see water leaking out of
various places from under the body and the back seat area is wet.  It
appeared to me it probably has hidden rust under the undercoating.  The
drivers seat bolster is torn up and the passenger seat is out of a ford
or something. AC compressor and condenser is MIA and the lines are just
hanging loose, despite the seller saying the air blows ice cold.  Car
has a little over 300k showing and engine sounded Ok and did not have a
ton of blow by.  I put the car in reverse and never really felt it
engage.  Car is parked in a driveway with a steep incline. Turbo waste
gate hose is unhooked from the turbo end and has a line routed to a tap
on the intake.  Not sure what that is all about.  Seller then hops in
the car and backs it down the drive to drive it up the street.  Car is
revving up as he takes off and you can tell its slipping badly.  No
telling if its low on fluid or just worn out.

Seller comes back with the car and I check the gauges and temp is pegged
at max.  I inform seller of this.  The other guy and I start talking and
he has never owned one of these.  I told him within about 2 minutes of
all this starting I was not going to get involved because this was more
or less a parts car.  The other potential buyer asks what I thought it
was worth and I explain in front of the seller that I recently bought an
85 that has perfect paint, perfect interior, garage kept example for $2k
this past summer, so this car would probably be worth maybe $800.  In
the end, this guy did not make an offer either.  He did want my number
though as he sounds like he may want to buy something from my fine fleet
of vehicles.  This was funny because we started working a potential deal
right in front of the seller of this car.

On the way home, I spotted this car sitting out by the highway for sale
and stopped to look.  I just so happen to be driving right by it and
have seen it for sale for a while.

https://stillwater.craigslist.org/cto/d/yale-1986-mercedes-benz-300sdl-turbo/7309187266.html

It is somewhat decent but a little rough around the edges.  Has
potential maybe.  I just texted the guy and offered him $1500 and he
says he might take it monday but has a couple of people that are
supposed to come look at it tomorrow.  We shall see.  Makes not
difference to me one way or the other.

Those are really large. I am not sure they could be cut on a standard tile
saw. I had a devil of a time with 12x12 on my saw. If you rented a large
commercial rig, maybe there would be enough space to hold them flat.

Cutting into the ends, as you outlined, it an elegant solution. I am thinking
you would still need a 4” diamond blade to excise the inner end of the
rectangles. Using the 4” would also allow for putting the hole in one tile.
The way to keep the tile from fracturing is to use lots of water/lube, tape the
outline of the opening, cut very slowly with minimal pressure, and keep the
tile as immobile and flat as possible. Not a 100% outcome, as there were
always a few tiles that had weird stress/structural flaws and shattered. Much
like glass, there seemed to be points of impact that resulted in breakage if
impinged upon.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Tile Work

2021-05-01 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Add to the tool list:
4 " diamond blade for small angle grinder, a diamond hole saw [hollow
drill, or straight drill {I prefer the hole saw]

Lay out the tile and the cutout. Measure the drill set back at each corner
so that when you drill a hole at each corner the outside radius of the
drill cutout makes a radius for the corner of the opening, THEN, use the
diamond blade with the angle grinder to cut along the layout line from each
corner radius. This leaves you with a very clean cutout and you don't have
stress risers in sharp corners that will crack later.

Use a piece of wood with a good straight edge clamped to the tile along the
cut line to guide the grinder blade, and keep the cut cool by not crowding
the cut [pushing the blade lightly along the cut line instead, with plenty
of water.
I find it works best if I make several passes along the cut line, taking a
little with each pass and filling the grove of the cut with water each time.

Do a trial cut on a sacrificial tile to "educate yourself" and if it works
well.. use that tile.. if not... do better on the next one..

Another tip... That tile will be the first tile laid, mark off the line in
lead pencil on the wall and lay that one, then all the rest in that line.
Then lay tile above and below. The only tiles you want to cut are the edge
tiles.. When you do it that way, it looks professional... usually ;))

Get a 4” diamond blade for an angle grinder. You can do it wet with a spray
bottle to keep the dust down and the blade cool, or have someone hold a shop
vac at the cut.

I'm thinking you might be able to do it with one of those vibrating
multi-tools (Fein, or other brand). Haven't tried it. Might need an
assistant with a squeeze bottle of water to keep things cool.

[MBZ] OT - Tile Work

2021-05-01 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Wondering if anyone here has experience doing wall tile. I ask because I’m
looking at some tile for a backsplash that’s 12” x 18”. Yes, those are big
pieces, but we really like the pattern as it’s a three dimensional “wavy” sort
pattern.

I’m wondering how (or if) I can cut the openings for electrical outlets without
breaking a tile. The studs are on 24” centers on the interior wall it will go
on, so I could potentially space it so the joints are at the points where the
receptacles are located, meaning I would just have to cut a rectangular section
out on two adjoining tiles (like this: [ ] ) to make them fit as opposed to
having to cut a rectangular hole in a single tile.

better be darned sure you’ve got all the openings and rough-ins where you want
