I don't care so much when sites do it for their own purposes. It seems reasonable for them to want to know which email campaigns do well and which listings are getting attention. But my guess is that they are also including tracking metadata for Facebook, Google, and other various ad networks. For most sites, you can chop the URL at (and including) the "?" character and it will still work. Not always. Andrew, When you get an email notification from BaT, it’s got metadata embedded in the link that identifies you and your connection with BaT so that when it’s clicked on they know it was you who “clicked back”. If you click on a BaT link that you got in an email notification from them, there’s a bunch of additional metadata on the end of the link. Click on one and look at the address field in your browser. Open another browser window or tab, and navigate directly to BaT and search for the auction they sent you the link for. Once you get there, look at the address in the browser window now. A lot shorter, eh? This is how they gather metrics to see how effective an email campaign is, or what auctions are getting the most attention from members, for example.
