[MBZ] Diesel black smoke
It’s been a while since I have dealt with this so I have forgotten the particulars of this issue. My 99 seems to have wisps of black/grey smoke at idle and when under hard acceleration can put out some black smoke. A 606 should have no smoke. It’s not rolling coal but if you suddenly downshift hard it can throw out a good cloud. Anyway, is this usually injector nozzles that need to be replaced or IP timing? One of my dad's friends was a janitor in the NYC school system for years. When those guys retired they'd give him a school doorknob mounted on a plaque. [MBZ] Checking oil takes 60 minutes....
In the driveway tonight, I idly decided to check the oil in the Element. Level was fine. Closing the hood, it would not latch. The release cable had jammed. I tried to work it back and forth from inside the car but no luck. Removed the plastic shroud that covers the top of the gap between the grille and radiator. This is half-a-dozen of those push-pin plastic rivets. Of course one snaps off so now I need to find a replacement for that. Three bolts hold the hood latch to the crossmember at the front of the car. All are rusty. Two come out fairly easily, the third won't budge. Hit the back side with PB Blaster and heated it a bit. Finally it comes out. Clean the dried out grease in the hood latch with brake cleaner. Respray with Lubriplate spray grease. Work some cable lube up the cable sheath as best I can. I work the lever back and forth inside the car and it seems to move freely. Put it all back together, and it's working again. Oil check complete.
