Re: [MBZ] Physics Was: OT - Ammo

2021-06-30 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
I was addressing the theoretical question about how a lighter bullet can have
more energy with less recoil. In a specific case, barrel length, chamber
pressure, and powder burn rate also control muzzle velocity.

Energy in the bullet comes from whatever the charge has minus any losses. Not
sure how a smaller bullet could gain more energy. More velocity maybe (M lower,
V^2 higher) but energy is the same for a same powder load in both rounds
E1==E2== .5*M1*V1^2 == .5*M2*V2^2. M2 V2>V1

Says that Lion/Mountain Lion will run on MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 to

Is it worth it? I don't know, I don't use Macs anymore.

I ordered some bismuth 16ga last week. Ouch! That said granddad's 16ga pump was

Bismuth is heavier (denser) than steel so I can use smaller shot which gives
more pellets. I've been using #3 so far, hopefully #4 will work better.

Looks like stuff is starting to trickle back into stock. I’ve been able to get
some decent quality 9mm lately, despite having to pay $0.50/round. Ouch.
Noticed there were tons of .38 special a few weeks ago, but that seemed to
evaporate. I wanted to stock back up for my Ruger Blackhawk .357. Far more
enjoyable shooting .38 special in it than .357. More shots with less wrist
soreness.

[MBZ] Physics Was: OT - Ammo

2021-06-30 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
Energy is 1/2 MV*V (V squared) where M is the bullet mass and V is bullet
velocity. Momentum is MV which also is also equal to the impulse (force *
time) needed to create the momentum. So for a given impulse (recoil) the
lighter bullet will always have more energy (less M, more V). But with
similar aerodynamic forces. A lighter bullet will lose energy (velocity) faster
(same force, less mass).

I know little about firearms but have seen the Ruger 57 showing up in my
YouTube recommendations, etc. Any thoughts? Shoots 5.7x28mm, a lighter round
but faster and with similar energy as 9mm. Supposedly less recoil (though if
energy is similar I'm not sure that makes sense) and more accurate.

It's apparently a more expensive round also, at least for now.

2021-06-30 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
I would defer to Mitch, as he’s the firearms expert around here.

I loves my Ruger revolver despite it being single action. I have a Super Single
Six as well that shoots .22, which is a blast and cheap to shoot all day long.
I think single action makes you work a little harder to make your shot, since
you’ve got to cock the trigger every time.

Yabbut he got out by selling to LKQ. That place makes most of their money
selling to bodyshops with late model stuff, I believe. That and there’s no
haggling, you pay the price they list for most stuff. If it’s not a commodity
part like an alternator or radiator they’ll haggle.

Yep, that sounds about right. I have been at the pnp before and needed a bumper
cover. After I pulled it I discovered it was cracked and had some other damage.
I could have made it work but was not willing to pay full price. Got got the
counter and they would not discount at all. Instead they just threw it in the
junk pile of cores to be crushed or whatever. Well OK then, if you would have
knocked $20 off it would have been better than nothing.

Even then. Back when I rebought my '83 240D I went to a local junk yard to get
a hood. The guy wanted $125 for a hood. It was the wrong color but in decent
shape. I offered $50, he told me to GTFO. I thought that was odd, I understood
that junkyards had negotiable prices. I tried countering at $75, he again told
me to GTFO. I asked if I could maybe also get window switches for the $125, he
finally ran me out of the place.
I ended up buying a hood from Fred Rios in RI for like $50. It needed more work
but wasn't bad.
I went back to that yard for something a few years later and found out he had
scrapped the whole car for $50. I'd have given him more than that for the
hood...

True but it's unlikely that each of the 200 cars would fetch $1,000 if
sold. What's typical scrap value on a car? That's a more reasonable

2021-06-30 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Yes I am
A hoarder, but will probably be looking to thin out cars. Maybe I will keep the
strictly parts cars put back, but I’m going to start trying to churn out some
project and probably get rid of projects that I will probably never get to in a
timely manner. Anything I have been buying lately has been more near road
worthy stuff.

I did buy this 116 diesel that has sat for nearly 30
Years that I got started. I really don’t want the think and not sure why I
bought it. I’m not sure if I may just throw it back up for sale as is, or yank
the motor out to store for another day then haul the rest to the back 40. Then
there are the tons of parts I have sitting around. Engines, transmissions,
interiors etc. I would really like to get rid of some of this crap but as soon
as I do I will need somebody. Rest assured though if I were to move again I
would sell off a lot of stuff before I moved it again.

Yeah last summer I was looking for a transmission for the Element. Not a
nickel/dime part. Contacted half a dozen sellers who had one listed ---
silence. It worked out for the best in the end, as I seem to have mostly
resurrected it with massive transfusions of fresh fluid.

Agreed, BTDT. I made some bucks on the engine and transmission but I still
have a bunch of other bits like taillights and interior switches that nobody
seemed to want. I should put the seat controls on eBay, IIRC they were
expensive when I bought them...

2021-06-30 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Same experience with car-part.com. I’ve tried numerous times to reach out to
sellers but have never received a response. I often wondered if they simply
ignore consumer requests and just respond to other businesses?

In one case the seller was nearby and I called. They still ghosted me when I
asked about a specific item and even provided the stock number. “Don’t know if
we have it, I’ll check and call yu back.” Just to be sure someone wasn’t being
lazy I called three times over a week’s time. Never got a response. And this
was for a $400 seat, not some $10 part.

Re: [MBZ] Texas Kaleb

2021-06-30 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Years back I had the idea to develop an enthusiast-oriented parts exchange
website. People who needed parts could connect with people who were parting out
or otherwise had parts to sell. The actual transaction would remain private
between the parties; the site would just offer a way for sellers to list and
buyers to search for or post "parts wanted" listings. It would be more focused
on owners of a specific manufacturer or model than eBay or CL.

I guess car-part.com is something close to the idea but more for individuals.
car-part.com seems to be mostly for professionals; I have never gotten a seller
to respond to my inquiries there.

In the end I figured that email or posting on enthusiast lists or forums was
simpler and would probably work just as well. thesamba.com classifieds worked
well when I needed to get an additional wheel for my Ghia, for example. OK,
procrastination was part of it too I just never got around to actually
developing the idea.
