Re: [MBZ] Travel trailers
IIRC, in the original post you said your dad bought the trailer new and never used it? They came with an "owners manual" so if that is tucked in a drawer somewhere, it should give you all the skinny on power requirements. I have a 5th wheel, same setup, roof air, and it takes 220v but pulls 110 off of one leg of the 220 to run the blower, while the compressor is 220. Coleman unit, which is very common for the travel trailer industry. About the only thing that changes from installations is the BTU rating of the AC unit, or the number of units on the roof. Re: [MBZ] Travel trailers
RV's are, universally, either 120V 30A, or 220V 50A. The 30A is so that you can run the AC _and_ everything else on one circuit. It is possible that your adapter (and/or something else) has enough resistance in it that an attempt to draw more than 20A drops the voltage enough to trip the AC off, while not actually drawing more than 20A from the source breaker. You simply must investigate. Monitor the AC voltage in the camper when the AC attempts to start. That should tell you if there's a resistance problem. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I sure figured these ran on 220 and the shore power cord if rather large, but I’m pretty sure the label next to the power cord says something like 125v 30 amp. Almost forgot, LUBE THE SLIDE.. a lot... slides like to stick and hang at the worst possible time, like when you are moments from pulling out of camp. I use dry film silicone because it doesn't absorb dirt as easily as some others. While you are at it, lube the jacks, they will work with much less effort. Somewhere in the trailer storage bays there will be a power cord to hook up at a RV park power plug. I'm taking bets that it has a 220 V / 30 amp plug. If you are trying to run the AC on 110, the compressor is only getting 110 on one leg of a 220 V compressor, so it says.. this isn't right, and shuts down when it tries to cycle on the compressor. When you replace the roof vents, use the metal ones. They are easily available, and don't break into dust at the first hail stone. Same sizes made in both metal and plastic, within pennies of the same cost. Most 5th wheel roof air runs on 220 / 30 amp for the compressor, but the blower fan is 110, thermostat could be AA or AAA battery, or 12V. Go on the roof, pull the plastic cover, and read the data plate. Also, get the Mfg and model. Then go to google university for all the details. Ah I missed that it was the AC that was tripping out, I thought you were talking about the slide motor. So the overall current reqirement should be enough to run the AC plus whatever other appliances might be in use in the camper. Fridge, TV, microwave, etc. I would think 20 amps would be enough to run the AC by itself. Yes I agree if it was drawing more than 20 amps your shop breaker should have tripped. I found the breaker panel, nothing tripped or any fuses blow but can’t really tell if that strange fuse for the slide is blown. Will check closer. So if the AC unit was working and it it was pulling too many amps it should simply trip the breaker in the shop? I seem to recall when I had a camper several years ago it did the same thing when plugged into a normal 110 20 amp outlet. Will probably just install a 30 amp out there and see what happens Sent from my iPhone > On Aug 8, 2021, at 8:26 PM, Allan Streib via Mercedes > wrote: > > I think the 30 amp requirement is just to handle the various lights and > appliances that campers might be using. > > There should be a panel somewhere with a couple of breakers. I think the 30 amp requirement is just to handle the various lights and appliances that campers might be using. There should be a panel somewhere with a couple of breakers. Re: [MBZ] OT: Ghia notes
I was at Harbor Freight today and they had a cheap overhead valve spring compressor so I bought it. I tried it but could not see how to release the spring keeper on the top of the valve stem. The compressor hooks around the lower turns of the spring and then has a screw to press the top down. All it did was pull the bottom of the spring up. So I gave up on that and used a hose clamp, a wooden block, and a pry bar to operate the rocker arm with the pushrods removed. The valve seemed to move fine; it felt the same as the one next to it anyway. New pushrod installed, clearances set, new spark plugs -- and it's running on 4 cylinders now. Verified by checking exhaust pipe temps with infrared thermometer. Also sounds better. Drives somewhat better, still stumbles when I put my foot down. Now that it's running on 4 cylinders, my carb balancing is off. So I need to go through that again. I'm going to play with the timing a bit also, it's roughly right but maybe I can advance it a bit more. And then if it's still not right I guess I need to take the carbs apart and go through them. [MBZ] Travel trailers
Today's project was to pickup my fathers 2006 Jayco 5th wheel and haul it home. He bought it in 2014 and hauled it home, and never used it so it has sat. When we plugged it in the slide would not retract at all, does not even act like its trying to do anything so I cranked it in manually. It is also somewhat of a basic trailer so it has manual jacks, not electric jacks. Tires are dry rotted and are dated 2008. Anyway hooked it up and got it home without incident. Needs to be cleaned up and both roof vents need to be replace. They were broken in a hail store and he had them covered with trash bags, a piece of wood, a plastic storage tub lid, and bricks. I will replace those asap. I assumed these things ran off of 220 so I parked it by the shop to plug it in but I guess its actually 120 30 amp. Do not have one of those so I used an adapter and plugged it into the regular 20 amp outlets. I wanted to see if the AC would work and it sounds like it kicks on for a second then shuts off. I figured if the 20 amp would not run it, it would simply trip the breaker when trying to kick on. So the question is, with it running on 20amp, would this be the reason it will not stay running? Does not have enough amps? I would not think that would be the reason the slide is not working, maybe a fuse or something. I checked the fuses but it has some sort of strange fuse for the slide. Maybe its like some sort of circuit breaker fuse, not sure. Need to replace the tires and repack the wheel bearings before I attempt to use it. Wife has a deal she is going to in September and it would be nice to have it for that. Its a 3 day show of some sort for her business and this would save driving back and forth. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Inverter mini-split and Generators
I had several surges when I first moved in, destroying several pieces of electronics. The main problem then was that someone had connected the main power ground to one of the lightning rod grounds. Removing that jumper solved a lot. Now I have a Duke Power suppressor under the meter, suppressors in the sub panels and grounded UPS for network and TV stuff. So far, so good. -Original Message- From: Mercedes On Behalf Of Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes Sent: Sunday, August 8, 2021 8:48 AM To: Mercedes Discussion List My 3 LG units all want 30A 220V breakers. No idea if they reach even close to 30A. Note that one unit has fried 2 main circuit boards at like $400 a pop. They seem very sensitive to spikes, once from a system spike (that also fried some of our water company controllers/monitors down the road, those were MUCH more costly to repair) so you might also want some surge suppressors on the feed from the generator. --FT Sent from iPhone ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Bay Ridge is far from downtown. There are subways everywhere. It would be insane to rent a car unless your work day involves driving around the Bay Ridge area. How much time will you have? Take the Staten Island ferry - great trip. Or the circle Line around Manhattan. Visit lower Manhattan to see the 911 memorial and then take the ferry to Liberty Island. Plenty of great museums and Broadway theaters may be opening up. This morning it’s at about 3/4 a tank and it started OK but had to crank longer than normal. It’s almost like it has an air leak when 3/4 full or more. Strange. I got the kit to rebuild the fuel filter head so will probably just go ahead and do that. Re: [MBZ] Inverter mini-split and Generators
That was the reputation of LG, 5-10 years ago. And probably a good reason not to run one on dirty power. Just because my Fuitsu never minded running on a cheap genset doesn't mean it was safe. But they do appear to be more robust than LG. My current setup, if I fry the board in my condenser, I can always take out the $50 Rheem board and put the original Goodman board back in. Frying the board in the furnace might be a bit more expensive, but I got through a five day ice storm on a 1980s Coleman generator, so it seems safe enough. My 3 LG units all want 30A 220V breakers. --FT Sent from iPhone > On Aug 8, 2021, at 1:23 AM, Scott Ritchey via Mercedes > wrote: > > Bottom line: I took some measurements and I think it is very feasible to > power an INVERTER style mini-split HVAC from a generator. > > > > Last night I discovered that my cheapie Harbor Freight Cen-Tech clamp meter > had a peak-hold function. Correct but once I got it running again on tank fuel it ran fine, drove it up and down the driveway and it was fine. It is still likely full of gunk anyway but since the fuel was completely full, as in right up to the filler cap, I will probably never run it down to near empty or drain it. Scott, that's pretty much as I figured. It's good to know the cheaper Pioneer/Gree class works about like I thought the Mitsubishi/Fujitsu class units worked. It appears that Pioneer and Gree are now established names, if not top tier names. I just did a search on Gree to make sure I was spelling it right, and found out that Home Depot sells 114 items of that name. Remember, in the 1980s, Goldstar (LG) and Samsung were no-name, but by 1990 or so we figured out they held up better than RCA etc. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
