It became a game, pure entertainment, to see how bad it could all work (or
not). It was all very easy and minimal time investment thanks to Amazon’s very
effective customer support techniques. I was in no particular rush or I would

Subject: [MBZ] Changed break pats and where sincers on 05ML500 today

Third set of pads I have ordered off Amazon. First 2 were sent in the boxes, no
envelopes, with a bit of tape and of course various bits were missing, one set
had a pad missing and no sensors, the second had no sensors, the third had one
sensor inserted already in one pad but it was not the single wire type it had 2
wires. I sent back the first set, waited to see what would be missing on the
the third set so will send the second back tomorrow. Oh, there was another set
I ordered too but after UPS picked it up the box fell apart so that order self
destructed.

Anyway I had some wear sensors in the parts stash, I think I ordered like a
dozen of them at some point just to have around and they are cheap enough. So
that got everything going

Only one side was worn to the sensor, the other side had quite a bit of the
pads left. Weird. Discs looked fine.

Test ride the break petal feel was noticeably better but when I got home the
wear light came on again but then went out. That was kinda odd too but I did
not loose my breaks.

Anyway an easy job on the 163 if you have all the parts, same way as a 123 or
126. Takes longer to get organized and get the vehicle jacked up and tires off
then to do the actual job.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Ghia notes - now electrical

2021-08-15 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Well one more bad fuse and now I have working parking lights on both sides of
the car as well as headlights.

Somewhere along the way "Neolite" H4 headlamps were installed in place of the
original lights. Might sound like an upgrade but these things are junk.
Lightweight plastic and just flimsy feeling. They also had either a DRL
function or maybe foglight (using H3 bulbs) and "city lights" or possibly
additional turn signal using a small incandescent bulb, all crammed in the 7"
diameter lamp housing and wired up but not working. I'm not keeping those crap
lights so I cut all the non-stock wiring out and that helped a lot with the
rats nest of wire under the hood but there is still more cleanup to do to
repair the miscellaneous electrical things that were added and removed over the
years.

I need to get some contact cleaner and clean all the fuse holders and all the
push-tab connectors. Everything is fairly dirty.

Probably entered from an IOS device, or the like.  My iPhone automatically
puts a period in every time you type two spaces in a row.

[MBZ] Changed break pats and where sincers on 05ML500 today

2021-08-15 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes

Seems it was the fuse. It has those ceramic fuses with the external metal fuse.
One of them was badly corroded at one end.

Marshall was right about changing old fuses.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Ghia notes - now electrical

2021-08-15 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Trying to figure out why my left side headlights and parking lights don't work.

With headlights on, I measure 12v at the bulb socket. Headlight verified
working by connecting it to a battery charger.

I made up some short leads with crimp-on tab connectors at one end to fit into
the headlight socket. I measure 12v on these. Connecting them to the headlight,
voltage drops to zero, no light. I tried measuring current flow, nothing.

I tried grounding directly to the body instead of using the ground wire in the
headlight socket. No difference.

So I'm thinking there must be some huge resistance somewhere between the switch
and the headlight on that side. The meter sees 12v but no current can flow
under load. So I'm looking for a corroded connection or splice somewhere on the
positive side? Sound right?

Used car prices are stupid, we all recognize that.

I will say that with the limited number of pictures it’s a very clean example
of a 300TE. The M103, despite it’s issues, all of which are well known and
understood, is a pretty dead nuts reliable engine. With the miles stated it’s
got to be on it’s second head gasket, for sure.

Shameless plug:

Car's in Spokane WA. (1990 560 SEL) Was my daily driver until I went on a WFH
regime. A moment's inattention put me into a guardrail a couple of winters ago.
I picked up a new fender and front door, and lights, at the boneyard.
Not yet installed, but I plan to swap the front fender, which was the worst
damage and which is easy to do. Damage on rear quarter and door
not too bad, would have taken rear door too but the donor was an SD,
not SDL/SEL.

Sat for some time, then the starter stopped engaging. Now has reman
starter. Is on its second tranny. According to my records I've spent
nearly $7,500 on it over the years, including its original $2,000 purchase
price.
Cruise control and HVAC working fine, last I knew.

White exterior, palomino (?) interior. Car is simply surplus to our needs,
and my wife has always hated it. (Due to the acquisition process, not the
car itself.) Politically-motivated sale. The only thing I'm going to miss is
the heated seats. Those (4) work _nice_.

I was going to put it on CL at $2500 and see what happened.

Re: [MBZ] Prices

2021-08-15 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Can't offer any help on that issue. The Courts hold absolute hostage anyone
convicted of drunk driving. They mandate what can be installed, how it has
to be certified, how often it has to be inspected, and what it has to
report. Also, who can install such a device and how it must be "tamper
proof".
All backed up by the drunk driving laws passed by legislature.
Part of those laws also state the cost of the machine, the install, and the
court release to remove said machine, must be borne by the individual
convicted.
The companies which make or install the machines know the charge ticket is
punched in their favor, so no price breaks are given.
The legal intent is to make driving a "sobering experience" used only to
drive to work, and your court ordered AA meetings, so you can pay the huge
fines imposed for driving drunk.
I know all this because of an employee who spent 5 years in prison for
killing someone with his car while blind drunk, and his conditions of
parole required a vehicle monitor, with GPS locator. If his car was parked
in front of a bar, that was a parole violation and he went directly back to
prison.
Talented worker, as long as he was sober. Ultimately he died of liver
failure after a huge round of binge drinking.

[MBZ] IP is out

2021-08-15 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Took me about 10-15 minutes but the IP is out. Not a bad job with the manifold
and everything off. I have removed and replaced plenty of 60x IPs before and
never used the basket, so I did not use it this time either. I did stuff rags
under it so the timer does not move. Anyway, with the IP out anh seals I should
replace on it? Nothing appears to be leaking so perhaps just leave it alone?
Can you even easily get the seals for the bottom/side plates?

I found my ip locking tool which was right where I thought it was but looked
there several times and didn’t see it. It was right next to my ip shaft
rotating tool. When you rotate it. It’s got a spot that has pressure like it’s
spring loaded so to speak the spot where it rests seems to be where it was I
inserted into the block. The spot where it needs to be locked is right at the
