Re: [MBZ] RV ac

2021-08-20 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
If the compressor is locking up, which it most likely is, it is cheaper to just
replace the whole unit. A compressor is about 400, plus install and charge.
It’s a r22 unit. A whole new 410 or whatever the new refrigerant is would be
about $660 or so.

Somewhere in a city near you is a shop that works on RV's. Remove the unit
and take it to them to sort out on the bench. Likely cost less that way and
end up with a unit that works. They should have parts in stock or get them

I found diluting hydrogen peroxide (normal drug store stuff) with water and
spritzing offending spots would clear up a stench. For a Reek, I needed to add
UV and alternate hydroxy and diluted hi-test rubbing alcohol spritz. Old wash
cloth to draw out excess moisture after letting it settle for 10 minutes.
Could take multiple spritzes. Rejuvenated lots of carpeting and floor mats
this way.

OT odor issue:
Gave the dog a bath yesterday evening. It's a game we play. I scrub her
with nicely scented shampoo, she finds something to roll in to get rid
of the shampoo smell.

Last time it was fresh wet horse poo. That won her a duplicate bath.
Last night, at bedtime, it was skunk. So weak I think she found some
grass that smelled skunky and rolled in it. That got her a 2nd bath too.
But after being in the same room with her for a while the smell builds
up, even though I can't smell it directly on the dog.

Came home from physical therapy and the house really stunk. I guess I
get used to it, but a couple hours away from home and I'm not used to it

Buddy of the youngest son has the domestic equivalent of the HiLux from the
early 80s. He’s a water treatment guy at the Grand Canyon. The truck has over
400k on it and looks like it, but it still runs like new. He maintains it well
and says it’s never left him stranded. Youngest son got to learn how to drive a
stick in it.

If you guys remember Tarek, I bought his 1995 S500 coupe when UPS shipped him
off to mainland China.

Unbeknownst to me before I bought it, he must have smoked like a chimney. That
car reeked of cigarette smoke, so badly you could smell it when you stood
outside by an open door.

I ran an ozone machine in it for two days. That did make a difference, but
whenever you sat down in the car you would smell it because you were disturbing
the upholstery padding and releasing new “smoke smell”. When I parted it out
several years later I could still smell smoke in the innards when I was
disassembling it. Ugh.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Garage door mayhem

2021-08-20 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
That’s what I tried but I don’t recall if it worked or not.

I would get sunlight falling on one of the photo devices late in the afternoon
in the fall and spring. The door would start to move down, then reverse and do
the “blinky light” thing to let you know it had reversed. You could try it
multiple times and it would eventually work.

It happened so infrequently I never really worried about it - I was always
reminded when it occurred and would make a mental note to check it out. Then I
wouldn’t be able to repeat it.

Windex is mostly ammonia with some surfactant and color.

2021-08-20 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
A good plan when there is just an odor, if it's cigarette stench the schmoo
that is glued onto everything needs to be removed before the stink will go away.
Last year I had trouble with water intrusion into the back of my 2010 Dodge
RAM. I finally discovered that the third brake light was leaking. After I fixed
the water intrusion I made little packets of coffee in a coffee filter folded
over and taped and scattered them around the interior. About the only thing
Choc'full o'nuts is good for. Well, you get the can...

Re: [MBZ] OT: Garage door mayhem

2021-08-20 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
When I was a kid (maybe 10 or so?) and back when Radio Shack sold electronic
project kits, I built an "electric eye" alarm kit. The light beam was from an
incandescent bulb behind a lens, both it and the detector (I think it was a
photoresistor) were mounted in tubes about 3 inches long or so, the purpose
being to shield the detector from extraneous light. It would work across a span
of 6' or so.

What I remember about that kit was that the instructions were pretty good, and
it did actually work when I was done, but they didn't really explain the
electronic principles. So I didn't learn much beyond organizing/identifying
parts, following instructions, and soldering.

Tried that last time, didn't help. Wife got disgusted, called door repairman
while
I was at work. Spent plenty of money and had the sensors replaced. Lasted a
year or two, then started the same BS again.

That's exactly why it's not done that way. Also, with this system you only
need two
wires, both sides of the door are hooked to the same two wires. Multiplexed.
Saves
wire and simplifies installation.

2021-08-20 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
My parents gave me my first two cars, both of which had been smoked in. The
first, a 1984 Ford Tempo, I made a solution of white vinegar and water and
scrubbed everything with a sponge until the water got so nasty I couldn't stand
it. I think I went through 6 or 7 buckets of water, maybe 2 gallons of vinegar.
I let it all dry and did it again, I think the second time only took 2-3
buckets, less than a gallon of vinegar.
The second, an '88 GMC S15 Jimmy had vinyl seats and a rubber floor mat so it
took MUCH less scrubbing to get the stink out of although that one,
interestingly, I had to spend more time scrubbing the ceiling to get the stink
out.Oh and it had a persistent smell I couldn't figure until we finally took
out the spare tire and scrubbed it. Dang cigarette smell really does latch on
to everything.

I forgot about the enzymatic cleaners, we've used one for quite awhile for
"dog stains". Our kitchen used to be carpeted and I swear the dog would save
up, come inside and barf on the rug...
I don't know if I've told the story here but literally the week I bought our
2010 Dodge RAM a Kirby vacuum salesman showed up at our door to do a "free one
room cleaning" so I unleashed him on the kitchen carpet. Sonofa gun got every
single stain out, I was pretty impressed by their system. We've got central vac
so there was no way I was going to BUY their thing but it seemed to work good.
The very next day the dog threw up on the carpet and made a new stain...
I was so happy to be rid of the rug, there was hardwood underneath. Our
"contractor" did a lousy job on the floor but thats another story.

I like cats, and I bet I could smell it anyway. And hate it.

Take bench with you, and sink it in a local river and pin it down with rocks.
Enjoy your day at the river. Bring it back home and dry it out. Repeat as

We have four of these openers, only one of them (the most used) has these
problems.
Your advice certainly applied to our 70's-vintage RadarRange, which we use
daily.

I think the photo switch 'safety' is basically stupid. Similar to the AFD
circuit breakers
that are now standard for _all_ circuits. I hate them. What happens when you
switch
on or off a light? A small arc in the switch. Which the breakers detect, and
then plunge
the entire room into darkness. Take a good idea, execute it past the point of
utility
into ridiculousness, and then nail it in place with legislation. You can
probably find
many other parallels, if you try.

It’s too late for this one, but in the future and for reference for others,
explore the possibility of buying a pump from the dealer. It’s close to the
same price as aftermarket, and the guarantee is better.

I make a cardboard template of the pump and poke holes in it for the bolts,
then put each bolt in it’s respective location. Makes it a lot easier to put
everything back together.

No gasket sealer. I believe the rubber seal is the correct one.

Can’t offer torque values, but I’m sure you can find the operation online with
them.

Get a new timing cover oil seal and replace it while you’re there. It’s
probably leaking but if not, will be.
https://www.eeuroparts.com/Parts/50251/Timing-Cover-Seal-1121840280/

This is a pretty straightforward job, especially on the later models with
electric fans.

Can’t offer torque values, but I’m sure you can find the operation online with
them.

Get a new timing cover oil seal and replace it while you’re there. It’s
probably leaking but if not, will be.

This is a pretty straightforward job, especially on the later models with
electric fans.

[MBZ] 2004 Mercedes E320 Water Pump/Thermostat Replacement

2021-08-20 Thread Robert Koziak via Mercedes
Hi All,
I am planning to change the water pump and thermostat on my 2004 Mercedes
Benz E320 4matic soon.  It's running a little hot and the bearing is loose.
I am in the process of reviewing videos and online instructions before
taking on the project and want to enlist the groups input!  One video suggested
making a cardboard of the gasket to place the 15 bolts as they are removed due
to the various sizes.
1 - There are two gaskets in the Laso water pump box, one rubber and one
cardboard.  Why?  Should I use gasket sealer?
2 - Torque specifications for the bolts etc?
3 -  Any other suggestions, videos or instructions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

No worse than the time I tried shutting the garage door with the tailgate of my
wagon still open.

Ouch.

The light sensors are mostly useless if you set the downforce properly.
I back off on it until the door won't close reliably, then turn it up
until it does.

Funny story: my bosses' husband bought a new Tahoe last winter. Two days
later the kids couldn't get the door to shut, the pressure sensor kept
opening it back up. Hey dad, enjoy the first scratches in your new
truck, you left the bumper in the way of the garage door.

I had issues in a previous home at certain times of the day/year where one
sensor would get sunlight into it and get wonky. Once I established the cause I
just ignored it, as it didn’t happen that often. I would just have to remind
myself as it only happened a couple times a year - sort of like Stonehenge.
