Re: [MBZ] 30yo boat diesel fuel?

2021-10-19 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Filter it, then mix 50/50 with fresh and use it like normal fuel.
I've used 30 year old diesel fuel to run a number of times in large diesel
engines. It worked fine.
Clue, how old was the crude oil it was refined from? 30 years is a brief
vacation.

We have 40Gb backbones throughout our data center. Most of the older hardware
doesn’t support that fat of a connection, but more and more stuff is beginning
to. We’re getting ready to deploy some Cisco Hyperflex devices next month that
are all flash storage, and everything between them and our core is 40 Gb fiber.
We’re going to have some screaming fast VMs.

Sad that the dealers of that time did a lousy job getting the stock wheels
chromed. Peeling chrome is indicative that they didn’t nickel plate them first,
which a plating guy at Kohler once told me is critical for chrome plating to
stick to a surface.

The stock (chromed) wheels that were on my 97 SL500 were chromed by the selling

Re: [MBZ] OT - Sonic fibre internet

I have a 400 Mbps connection at the Flagstaff house that averages (I run a
speed test app on a regular basis with logging) around 425 Mbps. Doesn’t seem
to matter what time of day or day of the week, it’s pretty consistent.

Figure that 40 Gb and more is pretty common in data frames and can go some
distance, so if they have a big enough pipe and the infrastructure to support
1000 Mb that’s not unrealistic. The fiber isn’t going to cost that much more,
the cost will be in the switching and routing.

a small dish antenna facing a tower several miles away.  Line of sight.
It works pretty well, but it's only as fast as it is.  (Clearly it's metered.)
The speed is not an inconvenience, _except_ when transferring 4GB

Probably not a phone line.  VOIP over the fiber internet connection.
Basically an interface to the packet switched network, the telco,
that you can use.  Is there a POTS interface on the fiber box?
That's one of the products we made at World Wide Packets.

You plugged your analog home phone into the POTS jack, the transceiver
in the box converted it to VOIP, the IP fiber delivered it to the telco
interface,
wherever in the world it was located, or needed to be located, and things
proceeded from there.

Maybe it's now all only an app on a smartphone now.  Same thing, minus
the POTS jack and the old phone.

We're paying $60/mo for what amounts to 5 Mbps via WiFi MIMO,
a small dish antenna facing a tower several miles away. Line of sight.
It works pretty well, but it's only as fast as it is. (Clearly it's metered.)
The speed is not an inconvenience, _except_ when transferring 4GB
database backup files to/from work. That can take hours.

If fiber were available here, I'd be all over that like a bum on...

> Also included is a phone line with unlimited calling to 60+ countries.

Don't take my word for it as I've never installed one but I think it depends on
if the lift is symetrical or asymetrical.

If symetrical I believe the post will be roughly centered with the "B" pillar
or vehicle center of gravity.

If asymetrical the "rear" arms on the lift are longer and the post will be
closer to the "A" pillar

An asymetrical lift would need less space in front of the post and more space
behind it.

A symetrical lift would have the car roughly centered (front-to-back) with the
posts.

If you're in a rural area with no cable/fiber options, it might be worth it. I
think it's still to be proven how well Starlink performs once it's fully
subscribed, but it should almost certainly be better if your alternative is
"satellite" internet such as Dish/DirecTV.

It's $240/yr more (plus 500 more the first year) so another question is how
much do you need fast internet?

100Mb service is (should be) plenty good for most household use unless you have
several users doing a lot of downloading or streaming, asuming you are actually
getting that speed. I just ran a speedtest and I'm getting ~120 Mb down/10Mb up
on my desktop computer with Comcast Xfinity.

Read the reviews.

For the most part it sounds to be decent, but there are issues if you don’t
have a clear horizon to horizon view for the dish. The slightest interruption
in the “visibility” of the dish of the sky will interrupt service.

I’ve heard from a couple people outside of Flagstaff that have it and they’re
pleased, but then again, their choices were limited to satellite internet. That
and they have a very clear, unobstructed view of the sky from both horizons.
Ask Kaleb how well satellite Internet works…

If the 'last mile' actually made it to your house, and the terms are
reasonable, I'd say jump on it. I've worked for several companies
that were focused on making equipment for that, starting in 1996.

Fiber here is still about a mile away.

[MBZ] OT - Sonic fibre internet

2021-10-19 Thread David Bruckmann via Mercedes
Good day,

Sorry for the OT question, but I figured someone here might have experience
w Sonic fibre internet service. They're laying fibre all throughout Oakland
and pushing their service very hard. I currently have AT DSL and it
hasn't been the best. Replaced the modem but it is still not the best
bandwidth to begin with.

Their online forum responses seem to be prompt, helpful, and informative.

Just wondered if anyone here can echo or dispute the above WRT to
fibre-to-the-house service.
