2021-10-28 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I like the look of that car... Mercedes got it just right. One of the last
years of building great cars. IMHO...
Didn't someone here have a white coupe version with a "bad engine" cornered
somewhere that was in a wet area they couldn't get their trailer into to
pick it up? It had been setting unloved for a "time"...
What ever happened to that deal?

A number of years ago a friend bought an old 240D sight unseen. His
daughter saw it and knew he was interested in acquiring another  one so
she called him and he told her to go buy it. Don't know what he paid.
Maybe real cheap.
He flew from Winnipeg MB to Vancouver BC and drove it home. He put new
tires and brakes on it before leaving BC.
He spent the first night in Coeur d'Aline Idaho, and the next morning it
wouldn't start. He had it towed to a shop and they replaced a glow plug.
The next night he stopped somewhere in Montana, and the next morning,
it wouldn't start again. They replaced another glow plug and the third
night he stopped in Fargo ND. By now he was afraid it wouldn't start in
the morning so he let it idle all night in the parking lot of the
Holiday Inn. He filled it the night before and again in the morning and
it used about $2 worth of fuel.

On another western road trip he drove an old Porsche 914. It acted up
and he took it into some little shop along the way. The mechanic who
worked on it told him, he ought to stop driving it as it was so rusty
underneath that it might break in two. He managed to get home with it
but it never got driven again to my knowledge. He was keeping an eye out
for a better body to swap the engine into but never did it. He has since
died so I don't know what happened to either of those cars. He had an
earlier W115  220D as well prior to the 240D referred to above but hit a
deer with it on the highway and mashed up the front clip. I don't think
it was ever repaired either. It was under a tarp at his house for a long
while.

Re: [MBZ] 2005 E320 - 134k miles - $4,300

2021-10-28 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
From what I understand the biggest issue with newer diesels is people that
don't drive enough. The diesel particulate filter (DPF) needs you to do some
high speed runs to burn out the contents of the filter. If you mostly putter
around town the filter can't clean itself (the term is regenerate) and will
eventually plug up.
I've had my 2015 Jetta TDI for almost 3 years now and not had any issues. You
can smell it if you stop during a regen, the fan will run after you shut the
car off and it smells a little like old school diesel exhaust. Normally the car
doesn't smell like a diesel at all.
I took mine on a run to upstate New York a month ago, 6 hours each way, 3 hours
of which was 85-95mph down the highway, a good way to burn out a lot of carbon.

But then there are new issues . . .
I correspond with a fellow on another forum who is having a whole lot of
trouble with a newer diesel SUV. Dealer is struggling to fix it since
there are no parts available at the moment. Owner is quite frustrated
since he intended to keep it long term and it is not only causing
trouble but proving to be expensive to maintain.

Re: [MBZ] 2000 Mercedes-Benz - $1,300 (Cayce)

2021-10-28 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
I bought a 300D off of eBay when it first was a thing. It was in San Diego. I
flew over, dude picked me up, got a flat on the dry-rotted tires. Dropped off
PO, bought tires, an oil change, transmission service and a coolant flush and
fill (drive across the desert to Phoenix in August…seemed prudent) and made
the trip to Phoenix, driving through 118 degree nastiness, without fail.

That was 1994ish. I’m a little less adventurous these days

Re: [MBZ] 2000 Mercedes-Benz - $1,300 (Cayce)

2021-10-28 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
What could go so wrong that you couldn't get home? Do a bit of an
inspection before you leave. Change the oil and the transmission fluid.
Check and maybe replace the differential oil. Should be good to go if it
runs.

It was under a tarp at his house for a long
while.

And it's a manny... but some rust in the trunk, so probably also floor pans.
Figure on some sheet metal repairs plus the engine work, and the interior
doesn't look in great shape either. Seems expensive considering all that.

2021-10-28 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
yes that is true, assuming his car has the 722.6, which it seems he
does, he would need to clear the fault and get the TCM happy

If it is a 722.9 the speed sensor can go bad due to a fault in the
circuitry of the conductor plate and can be repaired.  Lots of shops
will do it or it appears to be doable at home with some soldering skills

2021-10-28 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
 Hey Russ,
Thanks for the offer but I managed to score a variety of PS2 mice at my office
the other day.

Amazingly the first one I tried worked perfectly. It's an HP brand optical
mouse, I didn't give it much hope, I'd read that the serial (joystick) ports on
the Atari ST were low power and couldn't run USB mice so I'd assumed that
really meant they wouldn't run optical mice. I was pleasantly surprised.
Lit up mouse:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/YVJzgykU3azq7gpp7

I also found this cool little monitor in my pile o' stuff. I think I'd
originally gotten it to put into a 9"
Mac.https://photos.app.goo.gl/g3vc2NhKhcwBFQXd9
It only works in the high res, monochrome, mode, otherwise the sync rate of the
ST is too slow. I haven't had any luck finding a monitor that supports 15khz
VGA. I need to make a trip to the thrift store...

2021-10-28 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
You have to have a good conductor plate, a good connection out of the
transmission,
and a good TCM. In the W210, the TCM is prone to filling with transmission oil
that wicks
up the cable from bad seals in the connector. The goo eventually dissolves
parts in the
TCM, which is Not Good. I doubt the W211 is significantly different in its
weaknesses,
other than that it IS much fussier about replacement parts.

I have replaced 2 CPs (I’m assuming this is a 722.6?) and that usually resolves
problems. Could it be a solenoid? Is the speed sensor a separate part in the
CP, I can’t remember. Or maybe the TCM itself is bad? You could try swapping
one, should be plenty in junkyards or eBay for not much.

Yes there is, as is always true: elsewhere. Surely you're familiar with it?

I've always enjoyed working for the smaller companies most. It depends on
the kinds of BS you prefer.

Owner placing ignoramus in charge of other people shows that he has no
sense whatsoever. Successful family-run businesses start the kids at the
_bottom_ of things, so they learn the ropes. One that does otherwise is
probably doomed. Failure to keep promises is equally fatal. What you have
there is an example of a bad small business.

My cousin did bookkeeping for a local lumberyard when we were in high
school. The owner told her to get an associate's degree and he'd put her
in charge of accounting. She did, and the owner gave the job to his
daughter who had no training or prior employment in the company. She's
your new boss, now be a good girl and train your boss for me.

That’s the big problem with small/family owned companies. Short of marrying
into the family, the ability to progress or move up is severely limited or not
