[MBZ] Mudville =//= Joy today
I bought this $500 97E420 some time ago and determined it was not starting due to a bad ECU which was quite corroded. I found another one on ebay and had to get it programmed. I shipped the old one and the "new" one off to this kid in Kollyfawnya to clone the "new" one off the old one. He said he did that, and tried to clean up the old board but it had a coupla corroded resistors or something on the board and he didn't have any replacements. So he sent them both back. I put the "new" one in the car today and tried to get it alive. No joy. The car is over at the other property I am going to buy, I took everything along to work on it but forgot my scanner and Majick Computer so could not take a look at the car. Last time I looked at it with the scanner it was showing an ECU code, I don't know if I have to clear that or what. I'll give that go then talk to this kid, he seems to have a lot of knowledge about the nannies and such. Re: [MBZ] Transmission Fluid Q
I had an '87 toyota truck when I was young, and would agree at least at that time the transmissions were good. Not really knowing much the first time I changed the fluid I just used Dexron III that I picked up at the local gas station and it never missed a beat. The truck was used many years after that and when it was finally sold it was rusty as heck but the engine and transmission were still running like new. A friend who is a Honda-trained mechanic nearly had me convinced that Hondas MUST use the OE transmisison fluid you can only get at the dealer. But after two Honda transmission failures, I think they just have weak clutch linings. Watched a couple of rebuild videos on them and one of the rebuilders said he just uses good synthetic fluid in them and doesn't get them back for any reasons related to the fluid. Good call, Grant. Even if you have to buy a new drain pain, it’s likely much cheaper than buying a couple quarts of ATF. I have a drain pain I keep spotlessly clean for such things. Re: [MBZ] Transmission Fluid Q
How about just capture the fluid that comes out is a clean container [very clean] and seal it up while you are doing the repair, then put it back in the trans? It was working before, why not put it back in, just do a clean job of saving it. Looks like a 3rd gen uses T-III but T-IV is backward compatible. Re: [MBZ] I Gotta Say...
You get that thing on the highway and run it at 120mph all day long and step out feeling like you just sat in it. hell yeah. Might have to do something about that radio though I recall this guy who was a consultant to the company I worked at, they were paying him a lot of money to tell them what I got paid a lot less to tell them, but he was a consultant, so... Anyway one day we went to lunch and he had 560SEL, I had never ridden in one before so it was a bit of a treat. The passenger seat though was really squishy and it felt like some old chair I had in college that I found in the dumpster. I remarked on this, and he said something that it was supposed to be that way. hmmm. It gave me a bad opinion of those cars. Now, I had a consultant working for me who had a 124 300E and we would go to lunch in that thing occasionally, and those seats felt quite proper (and I find the daughter unit's 95 E320 to have the most comfortable seats of all the Benzes) and I wondered why the 126 was so squishy. Having driven them now, I think this guy's car had a bad seat bottom. Other than that it was a very impressive car. The 560SEC is not "quick" but it has the torks and feels pretty good, and again would run all day long at 120mph comfortably. --FT On 11/10/21 9:21 AM, dan penoff.com via Mercedes wrote: ..this is a really nice car and has yet to get bid up: https://thembmarket.com/1986-mercedes-benz-560sel-w-61k-miles If I didn’t think it would get crazy near the end I would make a play for it.
