Actually, the 707 was a more modern design based on the 135.

KC-135 and E3 AWACS fly over/near our house all the time - both based on the
707. We can easily distinguish them from the other jets out of Tinker AFB - the
maintenance hub for these.

[MBZ] KC135 Trivia Was RE: OT - Reboot Your Aircraft

2021-12-04 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
No longer a factor. All surviving KC135s are reengined from the old J57
turbojet to more modern fan engines with twice the thrust and 25-40% better
fuel specifics.
A classmate (with much KC time) once opined the better engines would only force
them to take off with more fuel from shorter runways. Back in the J57 days it
was typical to offload fuel before take off on hot days (while taxiing to the
runway).
The basic KC EWO mission was to proceed to the assigned orbit and pass gas
until they themselves flamed out or were recalled.
With care, the KC boom could tow an unpowered fighter, done several times in
SEA.

Re: [MBZ] OT mouse capital punishment

2021-12-04 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Maybe but it's a short tube. The dryer is against an outside wall so it vents
straight out the back and through the wall.

Incidentally the noise from the fridge was getting worse, so I took the back
panel off and it was pretty clearly the condensor fan that was making the
noise. I removed the assembly holding the fan (one screw secures it). The thing
is definitely built down to a price but at the same time it's very easy to get
it out and replace it if it comes to that. I was able to get at the motor
bearings and put a few drops of my favorite Lubriplate oil on them, then
cleaned all the dust and grime off the fan blades. It's running silently for
now, we'll see how long it lasts.

They are selling for that in a few days here now. It's a different market
than it was not that long ago.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Reboot Your Aircraft

2021-12-04 Thread Clay via Mercedes
Amtrak Empire Builder seems to run on windows software. The stop in Spokane WA
is where the cars decouple, with the observation car going through the Columbia
River Gorge (in the DARK) scenic area to PDX, while the rest of the train
continues to SEA. Except, most of the time the engine, at midnight, have to be
rebooted endlessly. Used to have a “spare” engine on hand that could swap out,
but now the two step is to keep on rebooting until the BNSF locomotive and
engineer can be roused from sleep and made to haul the thing the rest of the
way, four or more hours late.

I would not be entertained to find something that would fall out of the sky
needing reboot mid-flight. At least a train has rails to either remain on or
fall off at a meager 60mph, not hundreds of knots and tens of thousands of feet.

I turned my computer upside down and shook it, but the bookmark for what I'm

KC-135 and E3 AWACS fly over/near our house all the time - both based on
the 707. We can easily distinguish them from the other jets out of Tinker
AFB - the maintenance hub for these.

[MBZ] ML tars

2021-12-04 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
So the date code on these Lizetti tires on the ML is 2414 which I guess means
either 2 or 4 of 2014. That tracks with the guy at the distributor telling me
they discontinued them 7yr ago. Tires look good though , lots of tread on them,
I thought they were nearly new. H.

I think I’ll get a cheap replacement from El Mercado de Wal for the one that
seems to be bad then think about a new set when Mr Budget says to do it.

May have figured out where the little f---ers are getting in. The dryer vent is
missing one of the flaps that are supposed to close when the dryer isn't
running. It's only a few inches above ground level. And I have caught several

Re: [MBZ] OT - Reboot Your Aircraft

2021-12-04 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
I've heard it called Jack Welch disease, but it's really Bably Boomer Tantrum
disease. Long term planning doesn't extend past tomorrow at breakfast, and
squeezing money out at any cost is all that counts., once the husk is dry you
sell the company and buy another. The only thing that counts is getting what
you want the instant you want it!

Been watching this coming for decades, and it's why we have "supply chain"
issues. Half the energy wasted in the world is used shipping raw materials all
over the world to make goods that are shipped back

Re: [MBZ] OT - Reboot Your Aircraft

2021-12-04 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
The L-1011 was probably the best of that generation, sadly it never sold as
well as the DC-10, which was NOT the best of that generation.

Beautiful aircraft, and I've heard it was nice to fly as well.

2021-12-04 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
I flew on N194AT and N163AT frequently in the early half of the 1980s as a
member of a “Ambassadair”, later known as “ATA” when it was a private travel
club. One was a -100 variant, the other a -500 model. Both of these were used
for international and long-haul domestic flights as well as charters. There was
a third L-1011 in their fleet but I don’t have pictures of it. I think it was
destroyed in a ground fire in the late 80s.

My Mom did many, many hours in these as she traveled extensively with them
overseas. They had at least one DC-10 I know she flew in with them as well,
they might have had more, I don’t recall.

They were wonderful aircraft, and really impressive when you were standing next
to them out on the tarmac.

If you open the bleeders too far they can suck air around the threads and you
get steady small bubbles. I've only seen that happen when trying to vacuum
bleed (Miti-Vac) though.

It's probably a custom build of Windows that has only the drivers and features
it needs for that specific hardware and application. The Windows kernel (NT) is
pretty solid -- probably at least as stable as the Linux kernel. It's the
drivers and hardware of dubious quality that are the source of most Windows
instablity.

Doing a tire rotation, new front pads and calipers, and brake fluid flush. With
just a flush, why would I be getting a steady steam of bubbles? Brakes worked

While braking front end shook like warped rotors. I went ahead and replaced
them but the pads and rotors looked like new. Maybe they were not broken in

The aircraft avionics have proprietary custom coded OS's that have to pass
very rigorous testing before they are certified for use. That having been
said, I use a non-certified device for navigation that runs on embedded
Windows (can't remember what the official name is). It's never failed us in
10 years of use. The same company sells versions of the software that runs
on Windows, Android, and IOS - very nice to have the exact same software on
whatever platform you have.
The main selling point of the embedded Windows device is the 1200 NIT
screen and that it doesn't do anything else - dedicated to navigation.

Some of the airbus reboot efforts could be stymied by the built-in backup
batteries in most of those devices (EFIS).

Don't know much about avionics but I would imagine anything flight-critical is
a real-time OS such as VxWorks.

Passenger entertainment systems? Mostly Windows-based, from what I've seen.

2021-12-04 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Had the reboot delays on a regional Embraer a few years ago. After the third or
fourth attempt to get the systems up, running, and happy, they gave up and
called maintenance. All these electronic systems are modular so they just
swapped a module and we were finally on our way after about a 45 minute delay.
I guess we should be thankful it happened at an airport where they had
maintenance staff and parts on hand.

I’m gold, but that’s really the bottom tier for American. I’ll probably make
platinum this year with all my trips back and forth to Flagstaff. I should
probably get a rewards card of some sort and milk that, too.

It’s not too busy today, my flight to DFW had plenty of open seats. Most likely
how they got me into first to PHX. As a gold member they automatically upgrade
on the PHX-FLG flight because it’s so short (138 miles).

Yep sounds like American and airbus. I doubt you have status so surprised you
got a first class upgrade. That had to have pissed off others that were on the
upgrade list.

[MBZ] OT - Reboot Your Aircraft

2021-12-04 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Taking a quick trip out to the Flagstaff house for a week. Caught the early
flight to DFW out of TPA, a later model (“neo”) Airbus of some flavor. Got
delayed over an hour at the gate because they couldn’t get the flight computers
to boot. They had to completely power down the aircraft, which still didn’t
help.

Ultimately, they had to get in the rear cargo hold to replace electronics
before we were airworthy and could push back.

Got into DFW with 10 minutes to get from C to E. Did my best OJ but came up to
the gate as the jet bridge was rolling back. Poo. Holy cow does it suck to run
with a face mask on.

Thanks to American’s iPhone app they had already given me the opportunity to
rebook. I have to go to PHX now, then puddle jump to FLG, a whopping 18-25
minute flight in most cases. You often spend more time taxiing than in the air
on that flight.

Whined to an agent in DFW and got upgraded to first, so that helps.

Hope no more of my aircraft require rebooting today.

Absolutely agree. My point was more a matter of some thinking that because a
particular job only takes a minute or two it’s value is minimal.

Your glass guys are savvy businessmen, too. Even if you don’t need anything in
the near term, you’re likely to tell others about your experience.

They do, but it burns goodwill to charge high rates for tiny jobs.

I recently had a piece of glass cut to replace the chipped glass on my Ghia
speedo. I had no tools or skills to cut a 5" diameter round piece of glass, so
I took it to the local glass shop. When I came to pick it up, they had made
two, and charged me nothing as it was such a small and simple job compared to
what they normally do.

Now, if I ever need new glass in a window or door, who am I going to call? Who
am I going to recommend to my friends?

[MBZ] Question for those with lifts

2021-12-04 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Now that I have one of my lifts up and going, I need to buy some
accessories to actually use it.  I plan on buying some of these, or
something similar, to place under the car to further stabilize it.

https://www.harborfreight.com/2-ton-capacity-underhoist-safety-stand-61600.html?utm_source=google_medium=cpc_campaign=12144811130=12144811130_content=128369723195=128369723195=61600=590=CjwKCAiAwKyNBhBfEiwA_mrUMtlJKDf3HIEluLiphzPobWU804kGidK-5B34XOX5woHFP44JJsz_9xoCACgQAvD_BwE

Or something like this

https://www.amazon.com/Arcan-1500-lb-Capacity-Underhoist-ALSS15/dp/B07VM9JCN5/ref=asc_df_B07VM9JCN5/?tag=hyprod-20=df0=416926807659==g=15501973490895034425c===1024278=pla-895908365216=1===92859401246===416926807659==g=15501973490895034425==c===1024278=pla-895908365216

Is this also what you would use to jack up the motor a little bit to do
motor mounts?  Or is there some sort of other under hoist jack for
this?  My assumption would be, if you are under the car jacking up the
motor to replace mounts at the front, you would want to place another
one at the back to stabilize it.  Also thinking about other things such
as removing differentials, or subframes, transmissions etc.
