Alles.
Tom (my wife's ex and a good guy) had many leftover airmiles and sent me a
ticket so that we could attend RustyQ 2004.
That was where we met a diverse bunch of MB fanatics. Some of whom were
surprised to find that MA has a few republicans.
There was craft beer in abundance and great food for all. Good time. I
still have the soft beer can holder with "Rusty-Q 2004" on it.
Wow, am I old.

AFAIK the ChowdaQ is the longest running of the MBZ Qs. We've been going since,
I think, 2008. We did skip 2020 but made up for it with SpringQ 2021.

At SpringQ I made a pie on the Coleman stove. I might do a cake this year.

it. Previously I'd used some no-name Chinese AC welder my dad got at a tool
show and was terribly unimpressed. This thing starts arcs easily and lays down
nice weld.

I've got the equivalent Harbor Freight welder which is actually a little less
powerful:
https://www.harborfreight.com/welding/welders/tig-stick-welders/arc/80-amp-inverter-arc-welder-64057.html
Notice that it's actually more expensive...
I bought that one when the tractor seat broke on me back in 2020 and I couldn't
get it repaired on a Saturday afternoon. Frankly I was STUNNED by the quality
of weld I managed to pull of with that thing. That repair is actually some of
the best looking welding I've ever done. It was quite fiddly too, a fairly
small chunk of the seat base failed at the pivot point which left the seat
flopping around potentially dropping me off the back...

Anybody wanting to learn stick welding or to just weld at home would do well
with the Kicking Horse.

I think I paid about $300 for my HandyMig, its about $350 now. It's paid for
itself many times over...

There is no comparison, and I mean that in the nicest way.

RustyQ's were adult-only for the most part and usually ended up in an evening
that was a disappointment unless the local gendarmes were involved. The "Q"
part was during the day and did include family members and spouses
occasionally, but as the day wore on into the evening they could get pretty out
of hand, no doubt due to the liberal consumption of adult beverages, usually at
Rusty's house. At least the early ones were like that. I only attended the
first few.

The ChowdahQ I attended was far more low-key but much more inclusive, too.

It's really not fair to compare, they cater to different audiences and were/are
fun events, regardless.

In my experience they take anything that isn't obviously unusable. Nice thing
is that if it ends up sitting around too long without anyone wanting it, they
will take care of disposing of it.

The other thing you can do is take it to the local scrap yard, they will
probably take it as "tin" and pay you a few bucks based on weight. I get rid of
my non-working appliances that way. Having a pickup truck (or an open trailer)
makes it easier.

Yeah, the one here does quite the business. I'm not sure if it's something they
would want - the biggest problem for me would be getting it loaded in the ML.
These things are beasts, there's no way I could lift it.

I had two really nice ceiling fans I took down; one was really cool with a
Southwest motif and the other one was practically brand new with a remote and
light kit, too. Couldn't give them away on CL or FB, so I dropped them off at
H4H. They were excited as heck.

I may stop by there on the way home from work and ask them. Thanks for the
suggestion!

Re: [MBZ] Security cameras

2022-02-06 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
I'm all for wired systems when possible, but in my case that wasn't an option
at the Flagstaff house. Not to sound like a commercial, but one of the things
that appealed to me about the Eufy cameras is that they either have built in
(local) storage that you control, or they take SD cards of just about any size.
They do offer cloud storage, but it's not required to use their devices as you
can store everything locally if you wish, as I do. That and the stored images
or video are cached in the mobile device app as well.

I would love to have gone with POE cameras at the Florida house, but I already
have enterprise grade HP ethernet switches and I didn't want to replace them. I
could probably have gone with a power injector, but that would just have made
things more complex and decreased reliability, so I went with a conventional
DVR setup using coax and wired cameras.

For anyone considering security cameras, avoid the battery operated ones like
the plague. My experience with them found that there would often be a delay
between the time they would "wake up" when there was motion, meaning that a
fair amount of the activity that triggered the camera to begin with had already
taken place and was not recorded. Not to mention the hassle of either
recharging or replacing batteries.

I started a wordy reply and realized you would be better served by an existing
web site (if you can stand the owner, fenderman, who can be off-putting):
https://ipcamtalk.com/. Best to start on the wikki page:
https://ipcamtalk.com/wiki/

Up front, you need to decide if you want a cloud-based system or one where you
control the data on a local PC or NVR. Some of the cloud stuff is very cheap
because you only buy the cameras and some of those are very low cost but still
have usable imagery. But locating recorded imagery on some cloud systems is
almost unusable.
NVRs start around $100 (without hard drive) and up, basically same ballpark as
bargain PCs these days. Some NVRs have POE ports to power cameras (over
ethernet) directly from the NVR. Alternatively, you can use a software system,
like Blue Iris, on a PC with a switch to connect the cameras and router.
I recommend hard-wired cameras (vs Wi-Fi) whenever practical.
Nearly all cameras work pretty well in daylight but night (IR) imagery is
another matter, especially if there is movement. Cheap cameras need long
exposure times at night so movement becomes a blur.
Equipment from Reolink is cheap but I find night performance poor and autofocus
on my older zoom cam was unusable.  Zoom is only useful for framing the image;
if a fixed focal length can will do the job you don't need zoom.
Get turret-style cameras if possible. Avoid dome cameras; the camera sees
backscatter from the IR illuminator at night. When the dome gets dirty this is
really bad.
I have been generally pleased with hardware from Dahua and there are OEM brands
that use Dahua hardware with OEM software (like Amcrest and others). Look for
US or international versions of equipment; i.e., avoid hacked Chinese domestic
models that have patched software.
For your situation a cloud-based system may be best (low initial cost and low
power usage) if the online search/replay works well. I can't advise there.
Many cameras are relatively smart and use a SD card to save (limited) video.
You can access that camera's video remotely but this becomes cumbersome if you
have more than a very few cameras. I don't have personal experience with this.
The NVR approach records video as long as you have power. NVRs typically use
much less power than computers. NVRs with POE ports provide a self-contained
setup: all cams plug into the NVR and the NVR plugs into the router. Some NVR
software is more user-friendly that others.
Personally, I have about 12 cameras (mostly) powered by a POE switch and a
dedicated PC running Blue Iris. In most regards this is overkill; there are
many features I never learned to use.
I have an Amcrest NVR (not POE) running Dahua software and that works well but
it is not my primary system. My original plan was to hide this box somewhere
to ensure a secure copy of recent imagery.
Also have a Reolink 8-channel POE NVR that is marginal, IMO. The local
monitor/mouse interface works fine but remote access is buggy and the remote
application must be restarted often.
Like many things, the answer depends, mostly on what you expect and how you
plan to use it.

Re: [MBZ] GL fuel tank capacity

2022-02-06 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
My kids did that constantly. So annoying to go out to the car, needing to get
somewhere, and find the "low fuel" light on. Worse because the closest fuel
station is also one of the most expensive in the area.

The usual justifcation was "well the computer says 20 miles until empty" so
there was enough gas to get back to the station. I told them when they were
stranded with a burned-out fuel pump they were on the hook for the towing and
the repairs. Fortunately (?) it never happened.

Re: [MBZ] Security cameras

2022-02-06 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes

Equipment from Reolink is cheap but I find night performance poor and autofocus
on my older zoom cam was unusable.  Zoom is only useful for framing the image;
if a fixed focal length can will do the job you don't need zoom.

I know we have talked about this before but does anyone have any
recommendations for a dvr security camera system? I have been needing to get
something and want one that I can monitor remotely. We were out of town for 10

footprints out around the cars, barn etc. Looked like people footprints at
first but might be some sort of animal. If human, wind blowing might have made
them look less human. Pics attached. Anyway would like something that can be

Re: [MBZ] OT Welder

2022-02-06 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
From what I have heard/read, the low cost MIG welders all work fine in as much
as they are just big transformers. Where they cheap out is in the quality of
the wire feed mechanism, the gun/torch and cables.

By the time you buy a cheap welder, then upgrade the gun, the gas hose, the
ground clamp, the wire feed, and put a usefully-long power cord on it, you need
to compare those costs and the extra time to what a Miller or Lincoln machine
would have cost.

I'm not familiar with the Yes welder specifically.

Re: [MBZ] OT Welder

2022-02-06 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Reminds me of when, as a young college student, I built a set of speakers and
thought it would be clever to use standard electrical extension cords as
speaker wire, so I fitted standard 3-prong 120VAC connectors on the speaker
cabinets. Very easy to unplug and move around as needed. Of course nobody would
*ever* be stupid enough to plug one into a wall outlet... If I had been even
more clever I would have used the neutral and ground legs.

Re: [MBZ] OT Welder

2022-02-06 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes

I hope you have good luck with it.

I stuck with name brand welders. I cannot claim to be a proficient
welder but the whole process interests me. I have a Lincoln 220V  180A
Mig and a Lincoln 225A AC/DC 125A  stick welder. I had a Lincoln 225A AC
welder for a while and upgraded to the one with DC as well. The AC stick
welder worked well for sticking heavier steel together. I initially
bought it to repair/rebuild a boat trailer and it worked well. Must be
more than 15 years since my son and I did the boat trailer and nothing
has come apart. We were both novices and enjoyed doing it. We had 2
helmets so we could watch each other weld too.

The other logical choice is the Miller brand.

I also bought a 220V spot welder last year but have yet to use it. I
have acquired some further bits from Banggood to control the spot
welder. A fellow I know is rebuilding an old Porsche body from the early
60s using a spot welder. He says that is how they were built at the
factory so he sees no reason not to do the same.

I see lots of offshore stuff offered these days and wonder about
quality. I did hold my nose and buy a Chinese made plasma cutter just
after Christmas but have not used it at all. Too cold here to work
outside so will have to wait for spring. I bought the plasma cutter from
a Canadian company that has a good reputation for standing behind the
stuff they sell so if it does not perform, I should be OK. I really need
to upgrade the amount of electrical power into my garage so that I can
use these things to their full potential.

Doesn't look horrible.  The Chinglish will no doubt be very frustrating.
I like that the displays are LED rather than LCD, but I'm no fan of the
little disc flat pushbuttons.  I wonder how long it will operate before
something goes wrong with the 'brain'.  Once it does, game over.

The 220V adapter is a HORRIBLE idea!  There are standard plugs, cords,
and sockets that would have done the job, but that would have cost
them another couple of dollars.  Just don't screw up and plug anything
ELSE into that adapter, unless you want to kill it and/or start a fire.

Being in my first few weeks of stick welding class and really enjoying

lot of sticks) I was thinking about a machine.  I have been seeing these
Yeswelder products, and it looked like a coupla chinese guys were
bringing one to the shop to be tested out a coupla weeks ago.  (I
haveyetnot seen it running but will ask around).  My instructor
mentioned he had put some money toward their kickstarter some time ago
and ended up buying 2 machines ~$500 each based on that.  I'm not sure
which machines he got, but I saw this multi-process machine with a 30%
discount bringing it to $335.72 shipped.

Some review vids suggest it is a decent little machine for the money.  I
figure for that it would be hard to go wrong for $336 so I ordered one.
Looking forward to getting it and trying it out.  I'll start with stick
then as I learn I will try the other modes.  I got a cutoff tool and a
welder coming!  Dangerous man!

Almost looks like an Earl Scheib blue. Nice car, however, and as Jaime said,
it's priced appropriately for what it is.
