It’s quite possible our mechanic had to replace all the seals. I seem to recall the water jacket just being a sheet metal thing surrounding the block, but I could be mistaken. IIRC, the cylinders were replaceable iron sleeves in the block, held in place by the head. They would crack resulting in no compression. It wouldn't run on only three cylinders. We overhauled it twice, then he bought a new 1968 Mustang fastback, which he still has. When I was a youngster our neighbor had one. He was called Jack Dancer and there were 2 kids a bit older than I and they had a pet raccoon. He had a clapped-out light blue Dauphine he was always working on. I remember once he worked like 3 nights in a row to overhaul the engine from underneath, pulled the crank and pistons and all. I seem to recall the water jacket or cooling system to be wonky. I know my sister came home from school one day having run the engine dry, and my Dad came home form the office (it was just a mile or two away) and was running out to the car with buckets of hot water and pouring them into the cooling system. I think the car had to go to our resident mechanic, who replaced all the seals in the cooling system for a paltry sum. My memory is pretty cloudy on this, but that’s what I recall. Just visions of Dad in a suit, tie and hat, running back and forth between the shop and the car with buckets of water. It was pretty comical (to me) at the time. As an exec with GM, my Dad got all sorts of weird stuff from their (often) failed efforts at importing cars. The Dauphine was one example, the others I recall were an Opel Kadett and a Vauxhall wagon from the early 1960s. My long-suffering mother had to drive these cars (my sister got the Dauphine) and she thrashed them gleefully. My Mom was a raucous driver and loved driving a manual transmission.
