I just replaced the 9 yr old original battery today as preventative maintenance. I kept a 1968 Chevy pickup around as a 3rd vehicle for many years. I bought it in about 1982 or 3 and when I got it the tires were awful. When I drove it home, I wondered if I had made a big mistake in buying it. I bid on it and got it for about $750 but was not able to start it or drive it before bidding. In any event, I put 5 new radial tires on it and it then drove fine. I got Uniroyal blems for a discount price with part of the name scrubbed off with a grinder so they were "Uni"s. Those tires were on the truck for pretty close to 20 years. They only ever got something like 15K miles on them if my memory is reasonably accurate, but over time they dried out and cracked so badly that you could see the steel belts in the grooves on the tires. Notwithstanding that, I hauled yards of gravel and about 2,000# of patio blocks home near the end of time with those tires. I only made short trips with them at low speeds when they were really old but I never had any flats or blowouts with them despite heavy loads and obviously aged out tires. I finally put 5 new Goodyear radials on the truck and joked with the shop that put them on that I had just doubled the value of the truck. My 76 W115 300D had Michelin radials on it when I bought it in July 2005. I had no idea how old they were when I got the car. They were on it until the summer of 2019, (if my memory serves to be reasonably correct). During that time I did not drive it a huge number of miles and much of the driving was around town, but I began to worry about the age of the tires. They did not exhibit any cracks etc and had lots of remaining tread but were obviously old. When we changed them out, I asked the tech to keep 2 of the 4 that were on the car for me (the spare was different so I did not want it) because I needed a couple of 14" tires to put on our wood splitter out at the lake and 14" are becoming harder to come by. The tech ultimately selected a pair and told me they were not too bad but that the other 2 were not good at all. A good thing I finally decided to change them.
