Re: [MBZ] 1984 MB 300CD steering box
Danger! Over tightening the adjustment on the box will cause sticking and rapid wear! The box should NOT have required adjustment after rebuilding. Setting it properly is part of the refurb. It's possible that the shop you went to doesn't understand that on MB steering assemblies, there's "normal" free play of about a finger's width at the steering wheel. They might have tried to second-guess the initial setting. There's a process that involves a torque measuring device on the steering wheel. In the probable absence of that device, it is better to adjust it too loose than too tight! Also, the flexible joint of the steering column where it enters the box often wears out dramatically. My 115 has a HAND'S WIDTH of free play at the wheel! That kind of free play at the steering wheel is unthinkable today, but back in the 70s80s90s it was understood to be normal. If you REALLY want to see steering wheel free play, find a 70s VW bus! Ralph wrote: I am happy to have it able to drive, but I am not 100% happy with the performance.
