[MBZ] Fun at LKQ
So understand that I haven’t been in a salvage yard in decades, so a trip to the LKQ in Tampa to look for a spare wheel/tire for the ML550 today was a real experience. It cost me $3.00 to get in. OK, fair enough. There was one W164 in the yard, row 60, space 10. This was near the back of the yard, so I had to walk quite a ways to get to it. It was an amazing place, with cars up on old rims welded together to make crude stands. Big wheeled carts around to carry engines and transmissions, I presume. A couple of A-frames with big rubber tires, no doubt for pulling engines. Parts, bits and pieces all over the ground under every car. stuff picked over to the point that it was amazing that anything was left. The W164 was pretty picked over. It had been there since April, I believe. No spare wheel, but one of the guys said it probably wouldn’t have one. I wonder why, I can’t imagine they’re of any value in the aftermarket. I did see a small roll off container full of wheels and tires which I looked through to see if there was a spare tire - there wasn’t. It was a very educational visit, however, as I got some serious insight into the inner depths of the W164, seeing everything with panels off, interior pretty well stripped (although it did have pretty good black vinyl upholstery, like mine.) There were guys running around with wheelbarrows full of parts, a couple of guys working on a car that looked like they were stripping the interior out of along with the drive train. All sorts of interesting activity going on. [MBZ] In Search of a Spare Wheel/Tire
So the new to me ML550 came without one important item - a spare wheel/tire. I’ve gone to LKQ, about the only game in town around here for used parts, with no success. eBay has them, but of course shipping makes the cost unrealistic. I would be perfectly happy with a wheel and have to buy a new tire, which would likely be the case anyway if one I found was original. Looks like a lot of salvage places just toss the spares if they’re not full sized or use them for stands for the cars to be broken on. Anyone have a suggestion? I really hate the idea of buying a new wheel from Mercedes for $140 and then having to spend about the same for a new tire. I drove my Lexus GX460 this weekend on a 775 miles round trip. One station was $4.89 for premium. For a big 4WD SUV, I got 19.2 mpg which doesn’t seem horrible. But, at these prices (4.75 average), it was almost $200 for gas. Diesel was over $5 per gallon, but a 2014 Mercedes E250 Bluetec (I saw one for sale) would have cost half as much getting 40-42 mpg.
