[MBZ] Ot SNAPPER

2022-08-23 Thread RICK HAWKINS via Mercedes
Folks,

When I was up in McClellanville and cHarleston last week, I picked up a forest
gump snapper mower for $50 in Goose Creek, SC

It’s probably from the late 80s

All four tires were flat but pumped up … one front has a tube and the other
doesn’t but it seems to be holding

So far, $17.50 second battery and some terminal repairs, starter gear, prob
nylon, 2/$5 Amazonian and special tapered bolt pin for the handlebars not cheap
at $5 on bay of e … And key 2/$5 Amazonia

It has a solid looking 8 hp B … now it spins on the starter with no spark so
I ordered an Amazonian coil for $12

I think I’m going to like it … I just bought the house next door, here on tybee
island . It’s an old Florida house, I call it, from late 40s with unfortunately
flat roof , concrete block on the ground . But it’s cool. If I hadn’t bought it
someone would have and torn it down and built two monster jacked up houses

Anyway, with more lawns to maintain, this might make my task easier and I’m
fascinated with the simplicity of the snapper

Xx rick
I still have some 300d and 300td

Re: [MBZ] auto-darkening welding helmet

2022-08-23 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
That's the idea. I find when I haven't welded for awhile I need more light.
Eventually if I'm welding a lot with too much light my eyes will get tired so I
dial it darker.

Earlier this year I cut down the bucket on my garden tractor loader, it was 42"
wide, I want it 36" so it'll fit in the compost bin. That was a lot of fairly
mindless welding where I didn't have to see too well. I set the helmet fairly
dark for that.

Mine has a setting for speed of darkening, I always put that on the fastest
setting. My older helmet had battery failure, the darkening still worked but it
was delayed. I got flashed a couple times which is not great but probably not
permanently damaging. I figured out how to rig it to run on AAA batteries
instead of button cells and used it another 5 or 6 years. Eventually the
darkening circuit slowed so badly I just couldn't use it any more and I
replaced it.

Certainly. IIRC it doesn't carry a C rating anymore. I asked about it some time
ago and was told that the spec it had carried (CD?) was obsolete so for some
reason they stopped labeling for it.

MPG Lubricants up north carries a "Universal" 5w40 diesel rated synthetic for
$19/gal. I need to get over there the next time I'm up and see what the rating
really is. Could be a good deal for older diesels. The snowmobile club needs
almost 20 gallons of oil to change all the machines...

I have a cheapo horror fright one too and it’s fine for MIG but for TIG you
really need to see the weld pool and the tungsten electrode distance from the
puddle. You need a good helmet. Kari got me the optrel panoramaxx (which is the

DAMN! boy, sell that thing, take all the proceeds and buy a nice newer
211.  For $7-8k you could get a really nice low miles car.

And I bet if you went at the paint and that front fender with a buffer
and compound etc. it would come out looking pretty close all around.

Which reminds me, I need to pull out the manual for the 2015 Jetta TDI. It's

other is the DEF refill notification. I can't remember which is which, I
*think* the current one is oil change but I also can't remember the last time I
put DEF in it...

I've had 2 auto darkening helmets, I don't know where the first one came from,
it was a gift from my in-laws. The replacement is from HF. Both are pretty good
with adjustable darkness levels using a dial on the side. MUCH better than a
conventional helmet anyway.

The bottom line is, you have to first see what is happening, then "auto
correct" the weld area as necessary [without having to think about it]
based on that hand / eye / skill coordination.
Thus, spend the money to get the best helmet, with the best lense, to get
the best weld. You will ultimately be glad you spent the money. [The wifes

Re: [MBZ] auto-darkening welding helmet

2022-08-23 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
The ability to lay down a good weld [insert pretty weld] is a factor of
coordination of hand/eye control you see the color change of the weld
puddle and make minute hand movements to control the size and direction of
the liquid metal, the filler rod material, arc distance [which controls
heat and penetration].
[The wifes
reaction may not match your enthusiasm].
