Acid will eat holes in the tank if you leave it too long, especially if there
are already thin spots from rust.

I think with my 300SE the lawyer managing the estate (and I use that term
loosely) either didn’t have the pink slip or it had been lost.

Florida won’t accept cars without a title from out of state unless it’s a state
with a time limit or that allows bills of sale (GA, PA?)

I had to have a pink slip or I couldn’t get it titled in FL.

I wouldn't be be surprised if CA had some sort of reciprocity deal with other
states.

Re: [MBZ] Cleaning out gas tank

2022-08-27 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Muriatic acid = hydrochloric acid
It'll work MUCH faster but is much more dangerous, goggles and gloves for that.
It'll also leave a chlorine ion on the surface that will promote rusting. Hang
some steel over a cup of hydrochloric acid, the fumes will rust the metal.

Phosphoric acid is a better choice, it leaves behind a phosphor ion that will
protect against flash rust and help with adhesion if you decide to seal the
tank. You should seal the tank...

Again, the only way you could do it is if you live in a state that doesn’t
require a title, or maybe the “title washing” services like I used.

CA won’t issue a “pink slip” (title) unless everything on the vehicle is
current.

[MBZ] Who was asking about extraction cleaner and cleaning upholstery and carpet?

2022-08-27 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
You can skip ahead to ~29min to see how he is cleaning a really nasty
interior using a small Bissell extractor like the one I got. He could
have used a steam cleaner too but just used TuffStuff on the trim.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hz3xDx3SNxQ

He also did some paint buffing in the earlier part of the vid.

I really like this guy, he gets cars with issues for usually pretty
cheap and does a lot of work on them for not a lot of money, and turns
them into good rides.  Nice guy too.  Some kid bought this car and he is
getting it fixed up for him.

As a Californian with six vehicles, I can tell you that it is completely
normal to have the pink slip, whether or not the registration is paid.

I do *not* know, however, whether the CA government has any agreements with
other states to disallow transfer without payment of the back taxes.

Probably. Our 1971 250C has a fluid coupler, not a torque converter.

Also at least in the photo it seems to be missing the air cleaner.

2022-08-27 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Terrible that you cannot trust so-called professionals to actually be that.

I am not sure what the answer is, other than going by local reputation. But
even that isn't a guarantee. I had a supposed "good" local shop return a car to
me with no hose clamps on the new hose they had installed as part of a job to
replace a water pump and thermostat. I have had tire shops return cars with the
wheel nuts loose. I have had cars returned and found tools left in the engine
compartment. Very simple things, yet they overlook them. I hate to imagine what
happens on more complex jobs.

[MBZ] OT: BMW X5

2022-08-27 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
Well, I'm completely screwed. When I went to put the car back together I
found that the 'professional' mobile mechanic had trapped one of the oil
cooler pipes on the wrong side of the mount. I had to remove the mount
arm again in order to rectify things. I jacked up the engine as step one.
That's when I discovered:

1) The arm was rattling loose on the block, once tension had been removed.

WTF? I then went to remove the five bolts that hold the arm on the engine.
And I discover:

2) All five bolts are not even finger-tight. I did not need a wrench to remove
them.
I did need two different sockets.

With the arm out of there I can finally see the work site. The original
problem was
three broken-off bolts, which the mechanic was hired to remove. What I find is:

3) All three bolt holes are hogged out large. One has a protruding helicoil in
it, the
other two are not even threaded, and are broken out into the air on one side.
The
large holes are shallower than the originals, and I think I can see bolt
residue at
the bottoms.

Basically the engine block is ruined. And I spent money to have it ruined for
me.

IF I can drill the arm and deploy a never-used bolt hole in the casting, and
can get
the one helicoiled hole to hold torque, it's possible the situation can be
recovered
somewhat, having working 4 bolts total. I don't know if the helicoil was not
installed
to depth, or if he didn't actually tap it properly and it just pulled out when
he applied
torque. Guess I need to figure that out next.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Wood stove

2022-08-27 Thread greg via Mercedes
That being said, I have a traditional style "airtight" stove, IIRC it is
"Earth Stove" brand. It utilizes convection vents on either side, and is
fully lined with firebrick. My home is around 2,700 sq. ft. and has a heat
pump, but I run the stove to supplement the heat during sub-freezing
temps. One time I had forgotten to set the heat pump to heat only, and
when I ran the woodstove the A/C kicked on.

Yes, the glass darkens quickly.

Re: [MBZ] COVID

2022-08-27 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I've heard that if you have sinus issues you might not show positive even if
you are.

One thing I noticed when I tested last (Abbot test) was that they said to swipe
the nostril 5 times and that it should take 15 seconds. That's 3 seconds per
swipe which is probably 6 times longer than I was doing. This time I set a
stopwatch and just swiped for 15 seconds, probably 20-30 swipes per nostril. I
wonder if the previous tests I'd taken if I just hadn't swiped enough.

Re: [MBZ] Tracing electrical wiring

2022-08-27 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
It will work either way - it doesn't care which end is connected to what.
I've heard them called a "toner" - puts a "tone" signal on the wire, and
has a receiver to hear where it goes. Since it goes into conduit (I
assume metal?), you'll need to go to all possible termination points to
listen for the tone.
One possibility that comes to mind is a big ventilation fan somewhere
(since I just installed a small one in the hangar).

What is there to "let you have" ?

I can see if they are re-titling it in Krazyfornia, but if the owner has the
title and can provide it wth sale why would another state care about taxes owed
there?

Might be the case that the car could be impounded if you were caught with the
car there later.

Pellet stoves do burn very clean, and they're very efficient. One 40# bag of
pellets
will heat the beach cabin for 24 hours. (40# of firewood will barely get you
through
the morning.) Their piddly little flame, with no coals, is not aesthetically
very pleasing,
though. The wood stove is very attractive, if the glass is clean.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Wood stove

2022-08-27 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes

> look at. Any recommendations?

I put in Quadra-fire inserts to replace the ratty old inserts in our house.
They worked
very well, had secondary burn chambers and no catalysts to foul, and would damp
down
for an overnight burn. But, as inserts, they have (and need) fans in order to
actually heat.

Then the company got bought and the EPA got even uglier. When I went to look
at a
free-standing stove for our new addition they were much more cheaply made, and
wouldn't
damp down at all. I was Not Impressed, particularly with the damping lever
(which they
still had) that wasn't actually connected to anything.

I ended up with a Lopi, bought in Idaho, instead. It works well, but dirties
the glass almost
immediately if damped down. (Unlike the neighbors' Lopi, although theirs is
oriented deep
vs our wide.)

I dislike the triple-wall pipe, because I think that eliminates a lot of the
heat that would get
into the room. Fine for going through the roof, but I'd prefer single-wall
in-room going to
a 3-wall at the ceiling.

Our Lopi is attractive but doesn't heat as well as the stoves of yore I
remember. I suspect
that it really needs a fan in order to make up for its cosmetic and safety
features. But, even
without the fan it does heat and we're very happy to have it.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Wood stove

2022-08-27 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
There was a scheme a coupla years ago to build a pellet plant around
here to utilize the trees that couldn't go to the pulp plant or
sawmills.  A good part of SC is in managed pine forests so there is a
large supply of timber for whatever uses.  Most of it was going to be
shipped to europe it seems, and that pissed off a lot of people who
opposed it.  Lot of drying involved too, utilizes burning waste I think,
but that is not environmentally-sound to some extent. I don't think it
ever got built, might have been covids influenced that too.

Two comments: 1) They require power to operate, so one major use of such a
stove,
heat when the power is out, is compromised. (Some can use a backup deep-cycle
battery to operate for some hours, or you can put them on a UPS with big
batteries.)
And 2) they ran out of 'waste' sawdust some time ago, and now grind up trees
for the
fuel too. The price of pellets has risen to be somewhat on parity with other
fuels.

Which is not to say that they're not worth having, but they're not a gimme.
One of these
is the primary heat at our beach cabin, but I don't have one here. Heat with
power off
was a major consideration, post-ice-storm, and I have 20 acres of trees. Lots
of
beetle kill, wind takedowns, etc.

Do it the old way?

Turn on all the lights and plug a light into every
outlet then leave it on and turn all the other
breakers off and them look for what still works.

Or turn it off and all the others on and see what
doesn't work.

The wires which connect to it go up to the top of the breaker box and

which goes I know not where.

I want to find out where the wires which connect to the 30 A breaker go.

The breaker chart inside the door is of no help, because those spaces are
marked "spare".

Any suggestions on how to find out where in this 10,000 ft^2 commercial
building they do go?

Thank you,

Re: [MBZ] COVID

Not for me, Angie had it in April. I tested negative at that time just as she
is testing negative now.

I think you're right though, Angie's cousin has had it 5 or 6 times. I suspect
what I've got is the omicron variant, highly transmissible, not so bad to get
through. Other than a sore throat and lost voice I feel no so bad today.
Interestingly I feel better after I eat.

I didn't drink any coffee yesterday, didn't feel like it would do me any good
when all I wanted to do was sleep. I had one cup of cold brew today and my
headache is nearly gone. I wonder if part of my headache was caffeine
withdrawal.

If the circuit squealer doesn't work (you should have one anyway), maybe
a metal-detector will? 'Gold-hunt' your way to the end of the conduit? Won't
work if there's other conduit at the start point, unless you can open the wall
enough to find out where it starts to go. Or if your building has metal studs.

But, what kind of load needs a 30A 220V (?) feed? Do some head-scratching
first?
